Well im stuck between a rock and a hard place. A part of me want to upgrade and get it over with sooner, let the updates fix bugs and such, and another part of me likes the members choices here to hold off and wait for those bugs to get ironed out first.

Being of the spontaneous type, and as a malware tester, that side of me says let's chance it will be good enough to go ahead and upgrade while Micro receives complaints and issues updates to smooth things out.

I haven't had any issues since I upgraded to Windows 11 in August as Dev and the move to the final version in Beta was smooth and stress-free. Looking ahead now to the update on October 12.

I don't know why my unsupported Surface Pro 3 is like its born to run Windows 11. It shouldn't be but everything works - maybe it has something to do with it being a Microsoft product. I can recommend without hesitation an upgrade on the Surface line. On other brands, your experience with it may vary.

Microsoft isn't always definite about known issues. You do have a backup: if you find Windows 11 isn't what you expected or you're encountering issues, you have 10 days to rollback to Windows 10. There is a safety net should something adverse happen.

Its more like Microsoft wants it to run on select PCs which is why in complete contrast to Windows 10, Windows 11 is offered only as an optional update and people with unsupported PCs won't even get it.

Haven't had any serious issue with it since the end of June--it's been OK, even pretty good but nothing to scream home about. Doesn't improve my dim view of Microsoft, mostly lately with the latest online bypasses of its mysterious hardware requirements. I mean, tutorials are popping up left and right with Microsoft being as obtuse and cloudy as ever in its responses. So silly. :argh: And so not worth the marketing hype either.

    Windows 11. Yawn. :isay:

My i5 processor isn't supported. However, I have TPM 2.0 and secure boot. Those are the tradeoffs. In spite of them, my rig can run Windows 11.

I was thinking about that - yup, the processor requirements are too strict. It will take at least two years for Windows 11 ready PCs to acquire a decent market share. Who is Microsoft kidding?

Is your processor fully supported? Microsoft's official list is based on hardware specs because no good reason exists why Intel and AMD can't update the firmware on older processors to allow Windows 11 to support them.

As far as I know, it's fully supported... I got the message on the 4th that my pc was good to go for 11... instead of waiting around for weeks to get 11 via win updates, I downloaded and ran the Installation Assistant and everything went great.

My guess is that the i5 is supported but it might need to be 10th Gen and perhaps the hardware in general must be fairly new. I bought this laptop in December of 2020 so I guess it's about 10 months old at this point. I don't know much about hardware so your guess is as good as mine, but as far as I can tell, I'm 100% here on this machine..

The idiocrats at Microsoft find their advanced new supported processors on Windows 11 suffering slowdowns but why doesn't that happen on my unsupported processor? You would think the issue would show up in reverse. Look at what's in need of patching here!

I now have 4 Windows OS on the NVMe drive in my main computer.

Win11, upgraded from a copy of Win10 yesterday. A Win 11 ISO was used for the upgrade.
The upgrade took 27 minutes. After cleaning up the OS partition, I had 1.5 GB of Free Space more than before I started.

Win10, installed 20 months ago. I'll keep this Win10 without upgrading.

Win10 copy, to be used for an upgrade from Windows Update. When it's available.

Win11, fresh install from a UFD.
The install took 10.7 minutes. I've made no changes to the OS. No cleanup has been done. Loading time from the boot manager to the desktop is 42 seconds. I've noticed this prolonged loading time with each fresh Win11 install I've done. It will drop to 15 seconds at some time over the next day.

My impressions so far. Apart from Win11 having different icons, I can't detect a performance difference between any of the 4 OS.

This is why they don't want you to run the unsupported stuff. They don't want you to know... :isay:
I am really surprised that this was released with so many CPU issues and memory leaks. The Microsoft of yesteryear would never have allowed this.

They rushed this to the market without doing extensive development work and letting their OEM partners know new hardware would be required.

Microsoft is blaming its users for installing Windows 11 on unsupported systems. How is that our fault?

We were perfectly happy with Windows 10, which Microsoft told us would be the last operating system.

Now they have problems. Its not like they couldn't have taken another two or three years to get it right.

Lots of complaints here regarding W11, which is fine. But here is not the real world, people here have too high of expectations or they tweak their systems to the point that their barely workable. 90% of average Joe has no issues, and thats who Microsoft builds their OS for, not the small minority here.

I just tried this Win11 again. About 8 hours since the install. Loading time is now 15 seconds.

Brian, maybe windows is installing the appropriate drivers for the system on that first boot, which is why subsequent boots are quicker?

    chrome_sturmen,

I assume so too. In the past I've done multiple reboots after the install and the load time remains at 42 seconds. Then some hours later it changes to 15 seconds.
Today, I didn't do multiple reboots, just one after the OS was installed and another 8 hours later. Do you see this with a fresh Win11 install? I've never seen it with previous OS. It has happened on two computers that I've tested.

15 seconds is my Win10 load time too.

    Edit... It's always beer o'clock.
