You shouldn’t be choosing to restore an image if you just want to extract certain files or folders. You should be choosing to Browse the backup instead. You may want to spend some time with the Reflect User Guide, which you can access from the Help menu in Reflect. Macrium’s documentation is better than most, and they didn’t spend all that time writing it just so everyone could ignore it. ;)

@Rico I just realized there may be a misunderstanding here. Your earlier screenshot showed an error trying to access a folder called \Users\Rico. When I saw that, I thought you had mounted a backup that contained that folder and you were trying to extract some files/folders from that folder within your mounted backup. But now I realize that you might instead have an external HDD with a \Users\Rico folder directly on the drive and you might be trying to access an actual Reflect backup file that is inside the \Users\Rico folder on that drive? Is THAT what you’re trying to do? If so, I apologize for the confusion. Storing Reflect backup files inside your user profile folder isn’t a scenario that I had thought about. But if that’s what you’re trying to do, then if you click “Browse for an image backup to restore” inside Reflect, you should be able to browse into that folder even if you can’t do that within Windows, because Reflect runs with SYSTEM account privileges — even the “Browse for an image to restore” file browser window — whereas regular Windows is running under your user account with non-elevated privileges even if you’re an administrator. That’s why for example you can click “Browse for an image to restore” and then browse into the System Volume Information folder at the root of NTFS volumes, even though that folder is not normally browsable.

What are the differences in functionality (if any) between the Home and Workstation v8-editions?

There are none to my knowledge... just a difference in "support" of that version.

There is no difference in functionality, there is only a difference in licensing when buying

Pretty sure one user in the forum reported that Reflect Home does not write backup start and completion messages into the Windows Event Viewer log, while Workstation does. I also remember that feature being listed that way in a feature comparison chart at some point. It won’t be important to most actual home users, but since it’s possible to trigger other action based on certain Event ID entries being written to Windows Event Viewer logs, Workstation might enable more “external” functionality that way.

Note: This is not the same as writing ERRORS to Event Viewer, which to my knowledge CBT, Image Guardian, and of course Windows VSS itself will still do even with Reflect Home. I’m talking specifically about backup start and end log entries.

^ That one doesn’t include Home though (or Free), so it wouldn’t help differentiate Home and Workstation.

Thanks guys. I'll be upgrading my Free edition to Home (taking advantage of 'Saul's' 22% discount offer).

Does anyone use Scripts in Macrium Reflect?
I've never used the Scripts tab in Reflect. It has always done what I wanted without them.

Are there some useful ways to use them?

I've always wondered if there is a way to run multiple backups. I have 4 disks, and I run backup on each, one at a time. I asked this before, and best I could understand, it's not possible.

I use a script on my system to use the Directory Synchronization option that is available in the script generation wizard. Essentially, I capture an image backup of my Windows partitions onto a Data partition on the same physical SSD, and then I replicate that destination folder to my external HDD. That way if I'm traveling without my HDD, I still get image backups, but in case the entire SSD fails, I'll still have backups on my external HDD. There are some other handy options available in the script generation wizard if you use VBS or PS (not so much with batch files). For example, one option limits a backup job to running only once per day. That can be useful if you have a schedule to run the backup at user logon if you only want that to happen on the first logon of the day. You can also configure applications to run before and/or after the backup completes, and of course once Reflect generates the script, you can manually customize the script yourself to do whatever else you can think of and know how to write. Over on the Reflect forum I've helped people achieve custom needs that way, such as in this thread and this other thread.

I don't think there's a way to do that. I'm not sure why -- maybe concerns around simultaneous temporary VSS snapshots? -- but that's not something you'd be able to work around using a script. The Reflect application seems to have its own checks to prevent this.

I use scripts for all my tasks; my (PowerShell) scripts generate a push notification (via Pushover) when a task is done.

Dear colleagues, please inform the developer about the little bug. If you tick\untick this option, you will see a graphical bug in the form of a dot. If you click past the Macrium Reflect window, the bug will disappear.

Dear colleagues, please inform the developer about the little bug #2. Follow the mouse pointer carefully. Most likely, the bug appears in all interface languages except English.

Dear colleagues, please inform the developer about the bug #3. Most likely, all three bugs have a common cause. To reproduce the bug, click on the tabs in the sequence shown

My laptop has a 4k screen so it looks far worse than this as the default scaling is 250%. There are many things in the UI that could use some polish. It was the first thing I noticed when 8 was released.

I have a question about CBT. I use several external drives for backups and rotate them regularly. If each drive has a full plus incrementals, is CBT smart enough to track the changes for each drive separately?

Yes, although it doesn't have to maintain literal separate tracking "instances" for your various backup sets. The way it works is that when you start a Differential or Incremental backup, Reflect checks CBT to see if it has a complete change log going back all the way to the time of the existing backup that is being appended to. If it does, CBT can be used. If not, Reflect will fall back to the normal "Looking for changes" method.
