I had some VPN connections set up working quite nicely. Now, they're not. I'm using Kubuntu 20.04 and it uses the new OpenVPN 3 client. I would like to install OpenVPN 2.X to see whether that get's my VPN connections working. How do I install OpenVPN 2.X on Kubuntu to test it? If it works, how do I stop Kubuntu upgrading to OpenVPN 3?

On Kubuntu 20.04.3, in Discover and in Muon package Manager, I see the same as vasa1 found: OpenVPN 2.4.7 is offered, I see nothing that suggests it would upgrade to version 3. @Iangh, how did you get OpenVPN 3, exactly? Was it upgraded from 2.4.7? If not, then perhaps removing version 3 and installing 2.4.7 would be all you need to do.
Please see image for what's installed. I very rarely use the VPN but back in July everything worked. I try today and it doesn't. Getflix tell me it is working, which it does for me on Win10. On Kubuntu it doesn't connect so I'm wondering whether there's been a s/w change. OpenVPN is 2.4.7, client is OpenVPN 3.
Thanks, Iangh. What I don't understand is how you got OpenVPN 3 installed, as I, and also vasa1, get 2.4.7 offered, with nothing that suggests it would upgrade to version 3. But that's no help to you, of course. I hope someone can answer your questions.
I had another go based on comments making me believe I was an exception. I uninstalled everything OpenVPN related and went to Discover. I installed the top one, but when I went back it showed me having installed the second one. Up until now I had been clicking on the second one. Anyway, it worked! I assume 'Network Manager - OpenVPN client' installed something that was needed to get OpenVPN working. Thanks for comments.
Thanks, Iangh. Doing some rather extensive web searching, I realized that setting up OpenVPN is no trivial matter at all. I wouldn't know what guide to follow, one instruction even more complicated than the other! One guide mentions to install network-manager-openvpn to install OpenVPN dependencies. I suppose that is what you did and it worked out well for you, which is great.

Ah, that Getflix Knowledge Base article seems quite helpful. Although it says it is written using Ubuntu 14.04 as an example, which makes one wonder how much changed since Ubuntu 14.04 and if there are differences for Kubuntu. The articles says to ensure the network-manager-openvpn and/or network-manager-openvpn-gnome packages are installed. As network-manager-openvpn-gnome is not offered when searching for openvpn in Discover on Kubuntu 20.04, selecting "NetworkManager - OpenVPN Client" seems the right choice in Discover. And do you have OpenVPN version 2.4.7 now, instead of (it upgrading to) version 3? Anyhow, if it works, it's OK.
Yep, 2.4.7, install from Discover and follow network settings in Getflix article. I think 3 appeared because I didn't know what I was doing. I should know by now to stay away from the bleeding edge of technology and play it safe.
I can imagine how the bleeding edge of technology can bite one in the posterior. For me, that's one reason I don't install deb or PPA if there are good alternatives available via the package manager (or portable or AppImage options).
