Because of problems with a thunderbird addon where the preferences of the addon are only displayed in hex, I tested several things and found out that in the simple test of
    - clicking "Help" from the menu bar
    - clicking "About"
    - clicking on "New finctions and changes"
I get a new tab in thunderbird which is totally in hex characters
    thunderbird_hex.jpg

When I start thunderbird outside of Sandboxie, this tab displays ok as well as when I use the given URL in firefox irrespective if in Sandboxie or not.
    thunderbird_normal.jpg
Thunderbird and Firefox are current releases (Thunderbird 91.0.3 64-Bit and Firefox 91.0.2 64-Bit).
Sandboxie was current as well (5.51.3) but I could reproduce it with Sandboxie 5.50.2 and 5.47.1. Could not find any older installs yet.
    Win10 is current as well.

    Please advice.

My sandbox is emptied every time I stop thunderbird and firefox but...

    - I tried it out once more: sandbox was empty, started thunderbird, described behaviour as before.
    - With a brand new sandbox the same
    - btw what would be the difference to firefox?
    - and my postbox, calendar, preferences, addons panel, display of individual addons etc. work fine.
    - what does not work are the release notes as described above and the preferences of two addons (these are the only ones having individual preferences in a separate tab). In the addons panel, when I click on '...' and then 'Administration', the tabs 'Details' and 'Permissions' are readable, but the tab 'Preferences' is partially in hex (see below). The addons are 'Limit non-BCC recipients' and 'General Sync Integration'.

does this happen also outside sandboxie? i would bet it does.

other question - do you use windows defender or another antivirus?

BTW current is SB 5.51.4 or Plus 0.9.4

As I described before, I can read the release notes outside of Sandbixie in Thunderbird and I can read them in Firefox irrespective of Sandboxie.
The above described tabs for preferences of addons show up as hex with Sandboxie and show up readable outside of Sandboxie.

Can you not reproduce my first described case? There are only three clicks to see it.

I cannot tell you why this happens to you, but as you can read no one else responds, so it seems you are the only one with this problem. You should be reflective of this circumstance.

try a new profile with no tweaks, addons, or anything else.

    you possible missed this:

Well, I did try a bit, but this is no proof. The pre 91 version of TB is working fine in SB and the 91 is messing up, while unsandboxed it works, but this was a rough test. Anyway it could be something which is changed with TB 91 vs the last 78..
Not sure if it is SB related or some weird mechanism they changed moving to 91. So might be someting @DavidXanatos would want to look into.
However @JimMeier I would at least put the logs on and see if anything looks odd, or anything shows like failing. Again, I just made a rough check, so not sure if it would show the same as for you, but something seems odd.

I used Thunderbird for years and never looked for the change logs inside Tb ever :D
So I tried it in a new sandboxie classic sandbox 5.51.3 windows 21H1 Build 19043.1165 and TB 91.0.3 and got the same Hex Chars like the Thread starter.
For me it doesn't matter just wanted to say the op is not the only one. H_C user

Yes, it doesn't really matter what I described first. That was only an easy way to reproduce a similar result as I originally found. My hope is that this simple case once solved would solve the other misbehaviours as well.

And the original problem was not this and even not the preferences of one or the other addon, but (and sorry that I forgot to report this) the addon 'Limit non-BCC recipients' in some cases opens a popup on sending of a mail which shows up in hex as well. So I was not able to send mails because I was no longer sure which (non-visible) 'button' to press. So it was not just for joke that I opened this thread.

Now first my thanks to you guys who tested this case and confirmed that you also see something uncommon.

    To the open questions:
    - in my second post I already wrote 'With a brand new sandbox the same'
    - just now I tested again with a new sandbox and a new TB profile
    upload_2021-8-31_18-28-16.png upload_2021-8-31_18-30-13.png
with TB 91.0.3 64-Bit, Sandboxie 5.51.04 on win10 pro 20H2 build 19042.1165 and Norton 22.21.6.53, no windows defender.
The behaviour remains as reported above.

But at last I have to ask for some advice what you mean with 'I would at least put the logs on'. Which and how?

What I already looked for is thunderbird crash reports and I found none (inside and outside of sandboxie).

    So thanks for any advice.

@JimMeier do you have the 78 version still, if yes, can you try as with that one it works all. Just to see if it could be related to a chang, when they moved to FF numbering.

    I found TB 78.13.0 on https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/78.13.0/win64/de/Thunderbird Setup 78.13.0.exe
and with this release every display that I know that it is in hex with 91 displays readable in 78.

the difference between 78 and 91 is huge, similar firefox 78<>91.
its on David to elaborate. i wont do a switch in TB prefs because it can lower security.

for security - there is no need to put TB into a sandbox. physically it also has no fortune, any experienced user is able to recover traces and data, and for malware in mails, sorry, TB is a bad joke on that. TB is just a front end of firefox/gecko/rust with other features.

There is an easy workaround, add
    SpecialImage=firefox,thunderbird.exe
    to your sandboxie ini

the proper fix will be included in the next build

    Cheers

    Hello all,
I am new here in the forum, but have been using SB for many years. With Thunderbird Portable, version 91.03 worked for me the addons no longer in SB,outside SB but already!
By the tipp of David in the Sandboxie.ini file the sentence:
"SpecialImage=firefox, thunderbird.exe" to add the addons work again. Many thanks for this solution and many greetings from Germany, Sabine

    Hi David,
first, I can confirm that the workaround worked fine.
Second, for 5.51.6 without workaround I can also confirm that everything is fine again.

Sorry for the delay, after the first post of september 1st I did not get further alerts in this forum and consequently no more mails signalling updates. So I saw your updates just occasionally and so late.

    Thanks for your help

    Jim K. Meier

In former times I bought 10 life-licenses ( so long...). so I am using sandboxie since many years occassionaly with small problems which could be solved everytime. Since the last win-10 update in none of the pc and laptops sandboxie is working anymore.
I have 6 Toshiba Laptops, all of them upgraded from win 7 to win10. The newest update win 10 is build in and from this moment Firefox and Thunderbird ( also with the newest updates) are not working anymore in the sandbox ( it works outside). The laptops are client to a server with MS server 2019 software and GDATA.
Also 3 stand-alone desktop-PC have the same problem. Undeleting GDATA and windows defender is without success.
    I tried delete sandboxie-classic, re-install the newest version...no success
I tried sandboxie-plus...no success. I delet all version of sandboxie including the sbie.ini...no success
I delete Firefox and Thunderbird and re-install....no success.

Can anybody help me? In former threads are different workarounds from David ( who do a great work) but he reported, that all the bugs are fixed in the newiest build.

For me on sandboxie classic 5.53.3 on windows 10, Build 21H1 19043.1288, Firefox and Thunderbird both work without any problems. Even the hex char problem is fixed (just looked for curiosity when I read the thread title).
    MS Defender here.

Just my 2c maybe it can help to narrow down the problem (which is above my paygrade sadly)

Now I find a solution: the problem is GDATA !! (Totaly security in my case)
As I uninstall GDATA, reinstall Sandboxie -classic- 64x version 5.55.0 everything is working fine
Re-installed GDATA it still works, after actualisation of the virus engine no window with firefox or thunderbird.
Both programs start in sandboxie-control but I didn´t a open window.
David wrote that sandboxie is working under GDATA but it does not in my case. Has anybody an idea why?
