Died: Raxco's First Defense. Reincarnated as: Instant Recovery. Still my number one go to program for recovery, even before my beloved Macrium and Terabyte.

It's actually different. With Shadow Defender you can set Windows to start in shadow mode with every start albeit losing all information from the previous session. With ShadowUser you could reboot from shadow mode into a new shadow mode session without losing any information from the previous session, very useful indeed if you were testing a program requiring a reboot.

Nowadays it is not really so important as most programs don't require a reboot. Windows monthly updates are always installed with a mandatory reboot, but in such a critical situation it is better to rely on backup/imaging programs, as a matter of fact I believe StorageCraft discontinued ShadowUser because of piracy, but also because they were promoting their great imaging program ShadowProtect ($90 in 2011), very expensive then, probably untouchable nowadays...

I would honestly have to credit Raxco and it's First Defense for inspiring the need of a lot of extra used hard drive buys from local computer shops because I kept so many of those snapshots it wasn't funny. It was like having a library bookshelf of customized windows installations each one different than the other.

Another Raxco First Defence past user here. It made you feel invincible at times :D

    I miss Online Armor too.

I also had a soft spot for Ewido before it got gobbled up.

Online Armor for me had to have been the best and most comprehensive firewall/HIPS that I never have experienced since. It really hurt losing such a great created fashion of a security software as it was.

Well perhaps I shouldn't have said "no way", because I'm sure that MD was pretty good. But Neoava Guard was truly impressive, I really miss some of the features, not even SpyShelter has them. And the logging system was also pretty good, NG came close to being the perfect HIPS, I wish Arman Nayeri would develop a new version for Win 8, 10 and 11.

Sygate - Had to read most of the posts to make sure somebody still remembered it
Ewido - Microsoft turned this ino Windows Defender, right?
ISS Firewall - Internet Security Systems, bought by IBM, was fantastic. Not sure if anyone remembers it
PE Guard - Wish Opaida was still around doing this stuff
    PrivateFirewall - Powerful little thing
GesWall & DefenseWall - Nothing could infect your computer :)
    Online Armor
Outpost FW - Nowadays there's no such thing as a firewall like this
    Safe'n'Sec Firewall
TDS3 - Wow! long time. This was next level stuff.
Malware Defender - Damn... i miss it. If at least this one was still alive, i'd be happy.
    OSSS
    Asquare Antimalware - good stuff!
WebRoot SpySweeper - gamechanger for the time
    Norton GoBack
    Mamutu

These are the ones i used and loved. The ones in bold are the ones i miss the most.
I swear sometimes i just want to install Windows XP to play with these. Thank you guys for reminding me of these. Good times!
It's good to see that Comodo is still around (they NEED to upgrade their game, at least make it look prettier) and ESET, but i miss these more granular/advanced tools. Nowadays there's not much to play with. No decent firewalls, no decent Antiloggers, etc.

Damn, it's been a long time since i posted here. Need to update my sig.

Call me 'old school' if you will, but I loved Windows XP. It ran like the wind on my old rig (Pentium 4 with 1 GB RAM).

For some reason reading this gave me flashbacks to the days of XP, IE6, and countless browser popups. You'd visit a site and the next thing you know you had 32 open browser windows. Tabs weren't a thing yet, nor popup blockers, nor ad blockers either. The MVPS HOSTS file was about as good as it got at the time. :( :argh:

    Yea many cool software deads
You can also mention and few other.
    Scotty - WinPatrol Plus

But current time is not so bad.
Most games can work well on Linux well and parody is work even more smooth.
But if someone like me like stay on Windows we have also still some good software. ReHIPS / SpyShelter / Shadow Defender / Sandboxie / VMware still exist

Vmware made in 98 as wiki says https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VMware
So its have 24 years of dev and still in progress <3

NetLimiter is from 2005 also still active.

    KeePass from 2003 have 18 years https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KeePass
    Also still active developed.

    TrueCrypt/VeraCrypt from 2004 - have 17 years
How good some software are open source so FBI mad agents cant kill solid software even if some nasty boys use it to evil things.

My fav Distrubution Linux Slackware from 1993 still in dev.. whole 29 years

Kevin and Nancy McAleavey gave us BOClean, then sold it to Comodo. I purchased the program in 2003.

DefenseWall and Malware Defender had one problem - no x64. at least i dont miss them, although i have a license for each one. Outpost & Online Armor same.
"so runs the rabbit" - each gone, sold, disposed.
anyhow none of those were capable nor compatible to current software or windows itself.
    nice time, but gone.

I remember a software possibly named "Ad Block 3.1," which was basically a HOSTS file front end for Windows XP. Early in the days of IE 6, I used to turn off Javascript in the browser to reduce the popups. Firefox, which I started using in 2004, was a godsend in that regard.

I loved the Sygate personal firewall. After Symantec bought them out, I used Kerio Personal Firewall until moving to Windows 7.

As far as I can tell in those lists of old programs, I miss IE-SPYAD from Eric Howes aka eburger68.
Great program back in those days (together with SpywareBlaster and the MVPS HOSTS file)!
(PS: "program" might not be the right word but ok)

    Edit:
    And I used IE-SPYAD brother/sister AGNIS for AtGuard/NIS
