Many years ago, I liked Norton GoBack too, it was innovative and useful. I believe that trust began to decline when Norton products became heavy and sometimes they seemed a bit buggy.

 

I used OSS till it lived, it had to be my System Safety Monitor substitute. I thought that it had something of SSM " philosophy ".

 

Malware Defender and CyberHawk

 

Malware Defender... those were times . Best HIPS I've used so far.

 

No way, the best HIPS I have ever used was Neova Guard, I combined it with System Safety Monitor. But I must say that SpyShelter is also pretty good. Too bad that they stopped development on Mamutu and I remember that CyberHawk was crap.

 

Out of those you mentioned I've only used SSM, but liked MD better. What didn't you like about Malware Defender?

 

FileChangeAlarm believe it or not is from Windows 98 days and yet it's perhaps the single most vital and critical resident logging program that alerts AND logs a running tally of nearly every movement on disk-file create/file delete/file move/file change etc. It logs precise TIME Date and PATH - I wouldn't know where I would be without this long abandoned program that is excellent in helping me find the instant temp's are wrote to (for example Chrome etc) as well as how often Windows writes to Custom Destinations/activates tasks under the hood/ etc.

I started with System Safety Monitor on XP then quickly moved over to EQSysSecure HIPS.

DefenseWall, GESwall, Malware Defender and System Safety Monitor are the one's I miss having around.

 

Ahhh Another throwback I do remember when DefenseWall was a huge draw! The others too. But DefenseWall was on a roll in the fray of security HIPS competition 32bit.

 

I liked Norton Ghost around 1998.

 

There is only one program I wish to have from the past: ShadowUser from StorageCraft, which worked like Shadow Defender, except it had an extra feature a persistent shadow mode. Piracy killed it.

 

Hasn't Shadow Defender a persistent shadow mode on every machine restart too?

 

I had my one and only Norton Ghost Disc CD back around that time too and it seemed was a very necessary part of my support system. System Restore always messed and deleted files you needed and I detested that silly thing. It happened again after all these years on a try with it recently on my Windows 8.1. Costed me time to reinstall a pile of programs it deleted. I NEVER want to hear Windows System Restore is useful again because it's lousy.

 

Malware Defender was very granular, I thought to use it as substitute of SSM when it was discontinued. Very good also EQSysSecure, and GesWAll was the other my love with SSM. Process Guard was older, is it ?
