GitHub's Electron gets a lot of hate. I'm not sure it deserves all that it gets. Microsoft's Visual Studio Code is written on top of Electron and it is a pretty amazing and responsive application, IMHO. I suspect that there are just a bunch of poorly-written Electron apps that are giving a bad impression overall. Some other major apps using Electron: Slack, WordPress Desktop, WhatsApp, Skype, Atom, Discord.

OK thanks, I'm not using any of the apps that you mentioned, but I might use Whatsapp and Skype in the future. I'm still waiting for Whatsapp to scrap the mobile phone requirement, they are currently working on it.

Electron is a wrapper around the Chromium engine. Each Electron App runs its own instance of that “browser” to execute (kind of) a web App (for at least the UI; 1Password 8 uses Rust for its backend). That’s why many of those Apps are resource hungry and do not “feel” native.

Check the 1Password forum for many (valid) complaints.

OK I see, didn't know it was based on Chromium, no wonder that people complain about these apps being heavy.
