I have similar experience. I usually find out that there is new version here ( thanks to @mood ) or when running SUMo.

The 6.1.26 version, at least for me (Slackware64-current) rebuilds the kernel modules on each reboot. This is reportedly fix with 6.1.x revision 146035 test build.

Windows 11 is no longer compatible with the immensely popular Oracle VirtualBox virtualization platform after Microsoft changed its hardware requirement policies for virtual machines.

For VMWare Workstation, Hyper-V, Parallels, and QEMU users, this is not a problem as they support TPM passthrough and Secure Boot.
However, Oracle VirtualBox does not currently support these features, causing Microsoft's new policy change to effectively make it so you cannot use Windows 11 on VirtualBox.

VirtualBox devs are working on a fix
With Oracle VirtualBox devs dropping the ball on TPM support, they are now working on a passthrough driver that will allow a host's TPM to pass through to the Windows 11 guest.
Once this is completed, a Windows 11 device will see a host's TPM and should allow Windows 11 upgrades and installs to continue.

Unlike VMware, which creates a virtual TPM, VirtualBox's new driver will require a host to have a TPM 2.0 processor for this feature to work.

However, as the driver is still in its early stages, it is unclear if it will be available when Windows 11 is officially released on October 5th.

BleepingComputer has contacted Oracle about this TPM passthrough driver and when it's expected to be ready but has not heard back at this time.

I currently use Windows 10 as a guest on a Slackware64-current host. I have no hardware installations with Windows at all. I keep this machine backed up as it's the last legit copy I have. I only use it for one thing anyway.

Coming just a month after VirtualBox 6.1.28, the VirtualBox 6.1.30 release is here to introduce initial support for the upcoming Linux 5.16 kernel series. This means that you can now run GNU/Linux distributions powered by Linux kernel 5.16 inside a virtual machine, as well as to install VirtualBox in a Linux 5.16-based distro.

Other than these Linux changes, the VirtualBox 6.1.30 update is here to improve the Shared Clipboard’s communication between guests and hosts when the guest has no clipboard data to report, fix drive lock handling across virtual machine resets, and add an error message to vboximg-mount when no image is specified.

Installed it yesterday. Working A-Okay, except for building the kernel module each and every time time you start a Slackware virtual machine with the Guest Additions installed. This is not a new issue and has been happening for a long time.

Has anyone on a linux host with the 5.15 kernel tried the new NTFS3 driver, for a guest machine sitting on a NTFS partition? Did you see a perceptible performance gain?
I have a Manjaro host with a 5.15.7 kernel, and I have a Win10 guest on my Windows partition, which is of course NTFS. I thought it was automatically using the new driver. When I found out it wasn't, I got my Windows partition onto the new driver. But I don't feel a difference.

Microsoft removes Windows 11 update block for VirtualBox users

Microsoft has removed the last Windows 11 safeguard hold after Oracle addressed a known VirtualBox issue causing errors and virtual machine start failures when Hyper-V or the Windows Hypervisor were installed.

Safeguard holds prevent users from upgrading to Windows 11 to protect their systems against potential upgrade issues, in this case, software instability caused by compatibility issues between Windows and VirtualBox.

"Oracle has resolved this issue in VirtualBox 6.1.28 and later. To remove the safeguard hold on your device, you will need to update to VirtualBox 6.1.28 or later," Microsoft explained in a note added to the Windows health dashboard over the weekend.

Some users might still be affected

"If you do not have VirtualBox installed but are receiving this safeguard hold, you might have an application that is based on VirtualBox or which has bundled VirtualBox within their installation," Microsoft added.
"If you have any applications that use or create VMs or system images, you might need to update or uninstall them to remove this safeguard hold."

Virtual machines can be fully encrypted now, including the VM config logs and saved states (CLI only for now)

OCI: Cloud virtual machines can be added to Virtual Machine Manager and controlled as local VMs

OCI: Cloud networks can now be configured via Network Manager tool same way as it is done for Host-only and NAT networks

GUI: Added a new utility similar to "top" or "resource monitor" which lists peformance statistics (CPU usage, RAM usage, disk I/O rate, etc.) of running guests

GUI: Reworked the new vm wizard to integrate the unattended guest OS installation and to have a more streamlined work flow

GUI: Added a new help viewer widget which enables the user manual to be navigated and searched

macOS host: Dropped all kernel extensions. VirtualBox relies fully on the hypervisor and vmnet frameworks provided by Apple now. At the moment the implementation lacks "Internal Networking" functionality. This will be provided at a later date.

macOS host: Providing a Developer Preview package for systems with an Apple silicon CPU. This is unsupported work in progress, and is known to have very modest performance.

There is now VirtualBox KVM available from Cyberus Technology.

Cyberus Technology’s KVM backend allows VirtualBox to run virtual machines utilizing the Linux KVM hypervisor instead of the custom kernel module used by standard VirtualBox. Using KVM comes with a number of benefits.

On their github site they write:

What to expect
The basic look and feel of VirtualBox KVM will be the same as with an conventional VirtualBox. The user is able to boot the same guest VMs in their existing VirtualBox configuration.

Nonetheless, there are the following benefits of using VirtualBox KVM compared to the conventional VirtualBox:

VirtualBox can run in parallel to QEMU/KVM

VirtualBox kernel driver (vboxdrv) is not required

Modern virtualization features supported by KVM are automatically used (e.g. APICv)

KVM is part of the Linux kernel and therefore always directly available with every kernel update

Due to the replacement of the underlying hypervisor, there will be differences in the guest performance. Performance differences heavily depend on the guest workload.

How to use
There are no prebuilt packages of VirtualBox KVM and it needs to be built from source. The process of building VirtualBox from source can be found on virtualbox.org and only minor adjustments are required to build VirtualBox with KVM as a backend.

This is certainly exciting news. We'll see how this project will eveolve, particularly once prebuilt package packages are available.
