Which?: The cheap ink that printer firms don’t want you to use

This "study" compares apples with oranges. It's like comparing a car with an aeorplane. They are both means of transport, but you shouldn't be surprised to find out that cars are much more affordable than aeroplanes.

Yes but the point remains, printer ink is is stupidly expensive. I use no-name from Amazon, works well so far.

I couldn't agree more, ink is insanely expensive, but their comparison doesn't make any sense. By the way, I also use no-name ink.:)

could not speak for ink printing, but i replaced in 2001 my epson with a laserjet b/w with a 25.000 sheets A4 toner cartridge for 40€ (3rd party vendor). the prints are same good quality. i printed 5000 pages in 2 years with at least nearly no costs. for color i go to the copy shop, for colored images i can use a colour laser printer, for colored photo prints i can recommend a (used, amazon) CANON SELPHY CP 1300 (new is terrific expensive). its a wax printer, thermo sublimation (Thermosublimationsdruck) - which means very steady against sunlight and high resistant against anything else. A bigger one (A4/letter) is recommended from HP. wax printer should not unplugged in best case, this would result in head cleaning each time at power on - 3 cleanings means empty cartridges (HP)

I had read a claim in the past that inkjet ink was about $10,000 per gallon. I believe HP was referenced in the article and they said it was to cover R&D expenses as they were claiming to be continually improving the ink. And they wonder why people seek out generics. The problem is, every printer we have put generic ink in failed before all of that ink was used. By the third time you assume it to not be a coincidence. I'm sure not everyone has that experience but it sucks when it happens. I'd rather spend more on a good printer and less on ink.

simple solution - dont buy that cheap crap. it is known for 20 years now that printer manufacturers are refinancing their products which expensive spare material. a defective printing head means total loss and a new printer means saving money instead repairing. i had that with my canon, with my HP, with my epson about > 20 years, reason i switched to a laser. but even cheap laser printer jumped on that train some years ago. and a defective roll inside means also total loss. from my view there exist no good ink printer any more since ages. and if i would lease one and have service included. for business prints i never would buy ink again.

These were business class HP and Xerox printers.

Xerox seems currently overrated from my view, was better in the past.
