DDG is implemented into Firefox since ages, no need for another extension. The rest of benefit has been nullified in the last weeks, in special the FLoC, which is delayed to 2022. In fact DDG uses google, there exist no alternative except google.

I've been finding more and more that the results are not equal to google, even though it is claimed to use them. Especially the suggestions. But better suggestions requires more tracking.
I do agree that there is no benefit to the browser extension. Just use the site directly.

It has long been my impression that Google simply delivers the best search results. I would never, ever use Google Chrome, but Google as a search engine is simply the best.

OP, is your issue the search engine or the tracking protection?

If the later, can you see if you can disable the tracking for the site you visit or at least add the site to an exclusion list.

If the issue is the search engine, then I personally recommend (note: that it’s still beta)

yes, and google results are fakes, or what?
but ok, they changed the main results from google to bing, from even to worse. bing is awfull, sorry, and in no way comparable to google. google has also its own bots, this is no argument for diversity on DDG. and DDG also present sponsored links, no doubt

is there so much difference to google sponsored links?

I find https://search.disroot.org/ to be a suitable full substitute for Google on desktop. Most of its results are derived from Google, but it doesn't have the search bubble or privacy issues.

I use https://www.qwant.com/ for simple searches. For more complex ones I don't think the quality of the results matches that of Google.

And the winner is [groans in background] Google - for the above reason.
I can't say I've tried every search engine in the past 25 years, but I've probably come pretty close, and none of them are as good as Google - IMHO.
