Got a mail from Macrium today with this message: The release of Reflect 8 means that Reflect 7 has now transitioned to “extended support”, expiring 18th May 2022.
I did not think the two were the same, following instructions, for write cache [enable] or [disable] only showed Link Power MGT. See post 9323. Write Cache > led to LPM
I am a long-time follower of this thread. But, to be honest, at times I get lost in the detail. So, I skip posts sometimes. I apologize if this has already been addressed. But, is there a strong reason to upgrade from version 7 to version 8? I just purchased version 8 because I received a 50% discount, but I have no intentions of upgrading anytime soon. However, if there is a good reason to, I'm willing to do so. Other than the fact that it is newer, what advantages does 8 have over version 7?
Both versions work great, there is no difference in the end result. Because of the interface changes v8 is much more user friendly, also has new options, which not every user may need. I give preference to v8, moreover v7 is unlikely to be further developed.
This is a very good point, most software is a never-ending work in progress, but version 7 has reached its final stage given the current release of Windows. I can‘t see any reason to upgrade to v.8 except support a company that I respect a lot. I will eventually comply, but honestly v.8 at this point in time is really meant for people buying MR for the first time, a bit like car manufacturers regularly producing new models as the state of the art.
I just noticed this on the MR Free download page (my bold blue). https://www.macrium.com/reflectfree Is that the only way to get v8 free version?
What's wrong with that method... you get to kick the tires if you want to and if you don't like it, you wind up with the FREE version. To me it's a much better deal than just downloading the FREE version. At this point we don't know if Macrium will be offering their v8 FREE version like they used to... we'll have to wait.
Macrium has a page in their knowledgebase called "New in Reflect 8.0", which is focused on providing exactly the information that its name suggests. Here is the link. Judge for yourself whether there's a good reason for you personally to upgrade. Or just go to their website where Reflect V8 is prominently announced and click "Find out more".
I would be entitled to a 50% upgrade discount from version 7 to 8. But in such situations I am always quite indecisive if I shall do it or not. So I would like to ask if there can be made a rough estimate for how long the discount will be presumably offered.
If memory serves, that discount was persistently available on V7 for people upgrading from V6. That was simply the standard discount for anybody upgrading from the immediately preceding major version, not a limited time offer. I may be wrong though. There was a limited time offer where new V7 licenses could be purchased at a discount and came with a free upgrade to V8 (though your one year of support began as of the V7 purchase date), but that was a separate deal.
After filling out the form, you will still only download the downloader, and the downloader will download the trial version. Links to download the downloader are available in this thread, links to download v8.0 Free are available in this thread, filling out the form is not required.
Absolutely correct. That said this is absolutely worth the money for multiple reasons. They seem to always have a black Friday sale if one is not eligible for an upgrade.

Update! Thanks for the help with new hdd install: Just prior to the hdd (seagate) drive failure. Windows10 did an update, it added a 'tray icon' showing weather news etc. 'News & Interests' added from that windows update. Ir was 20H2. Then 2 BSOD's . Yesterday I re-installed 20H2. Today BSOD "k-mode exception not handled" I turned off power settings, 'turn on fast startup' unticked Used 'Driver Booster' updated drivers While BSOD I missed the bracket [ ] that contained the bad acting driver's name hopefully driver booster found it Anyone notice association 20H2, installed then BSOD's? 21H1 is waiting,
BSOD occurred at 6:48pm found: Note previously I just ignored 'optional driver updates. Seemed to be for Microsoft key board & mouse. That update from Driver Booster, must have updated. As Windows updates, does not find an update for keyboard mouse
Disable mrcbt driver. Try to analyze BSOD cause (analyze memory dump) with WhoCrashed, MiniDumper, BlueScreenView by NirSoft.
disable mrcbt driver? This is Macrium Driver? nvddmkm.sys seems it's my NVIdia driver also ran windows memory diag, 1st pass clean, 2nd pass 'went for a walk' windows said a report would be available after reboot, can't find it looked in c:\ <root>
mrcbt is the Changed Block Tracker driver. I don't use the feature due to previous issues. nvddmkm.sys is a NVidia driver. Can't disable that...
