It good to have different opinions and try to understand what why is thinking that particular way.
You may not agree with their thinking, but try to understand their point of view. And why they are
    thinking that particular way.

My setup consist of the following below:

    * Cleaning of Malware, just in case.
    * Containment

    * To recover certain files that may get encrypted/infected/missing and/or need to be replace.
    * Prevention of information being hijack or missing.
    * And to stop malware dead in it tracks.

Quick simple, but become extremely complicated.

So, what is your security setup these days?
    I am waiting to hear......

I've read in the past, the more that you have on your computer, the greater the attack surface. IDK if that relates to av's and such..

    Hi,
"attack surface is simply the number of possible ways an attacker can get into a ... for PC"
I guess it depend on what you install for protection.......
AV's have risk and benefits from exploiting vulnerabilities.
That is why we are updating software all the time, ect.......
    External and internal attacks......

In theory every AV can expand your attack surface and make you less secure but in practise benefits from using AV outweigh possible risk.

There was a time when that was not necessarily true. This article is from that time and is a bit dated now. Most of these issue have been addressed but everyone has to decide for themselves if the benefit/risk ratio swings the direction that they want it to.

My Windows XP notebook is dead.
I will probably buy another one in the fall.
With a modern OS, of course.
This summer I will either use my daughter's desktop or my smartphone.

    Yep.
I am now "forced" to comply to all similar security setup.
    With tiny changes.
Luckily there are W. members who have slightly different, interesting security configurations.

Don't worry, it's not your case.

No, that should be fine. Maybe some backup on an external hard drive.

This pc is over 10 years old.
I have made many modifications to get it running smoothly again.

    I have not disabled indexing.
You can read on the net constraining reviews.

    Q:
Do any W. members recommend disabling indexing on old PCs because they have personally experienced a performance increase?

I understand the machine is getting old (aren't we all?), but these extensions seem to be a little dated now. Even Decentraleyes hasn't been updated since November 2020.

Just curious also, why install Chrome when there are more private alternatives; EG Brave?
