"BARCELONA, June 23 (Reuters) - Antivirus creator John McAfee, 75, was found dead in his prison cell in Barcelona after the Spanish high court had authorised his extradition to the U.S., the Catalan justice department said, confirming an earlier report from El Mundo newspaper. Everything points it could be a death by suicide, the department said in a statement..." https://www.reuters.com/legal/gover...-spanish-court-allows-extradition-2021-06-23/
Whoa! You're kidding?! He sure was an eccentric figure, but didn't expect this. Sorry to hear it. RIP. Hope it wasn't something more sinister.
Sadly, McAfee had been on an escalating downhill personal slide for a number of years. If you have any doubts about it, view the movie about the Belize murder incident.

He was a character, funny, weird, and paranoid all rolled into one. He probably did commit suicide, but when he could get on Twitter somehow after his arrest in Spain he said quite a few times that if "I'm ever found dead, I didn't do it."

John McAfee is dead. Long live John McAfee! Wonder what I can get on eBay for those AV floppies I got stuffed in some box somewhere?

Thank you for your demonstration of the unparalleled skills required for looking up stuff on ebay. Historically, the works of high-profile personalities skyrocket in value on the event of their deaths. Especially if their lives were controversial and particularly if their deaths even more so; even if their stuff wasn't worth a squat previously. Obviously, those prices are/were pre-news of his death and my question, seemingly lost to you in the strict context of this discussion, was a tongue-in-cheek muse of what will most likely never happen, bidding wars for antique software, regardless of condition. That said, to an avid collector, a clean, intact box signed by John hisself (an unlikely scenario) might garner some cheddar . Autographed, this one might get... $6.00. https://www.ebay.com/itm/114860747003 Cheers.
John McAfee's widow says that the antivirus magnate, who died in a Spanish jail, was not suicidal June 26, 2021 https://www.businessinsider.com/john-mcafee-not-suicidal-death-prison-janice-mcafee-software-2021-6
The wrong McAfee died. When I serviced PCs ~18yrs ago I wanted McAfee to die. But NOT the man. I wanted the stupid antivirus to die. What a bane that was to me. Like 40% of the *** up PCs I serviced that had software problems had McAfee, Itunes or a specific FW (can't remember which maybe Zone Alarm?) installed. I think he suicided because he was a narcissist.
Oddly, McAfee was one of the only AV's (supplied with my ISP) that I used that never gave me any trouble. I only stopped using it because it was so heavy on my old Belnea netbook.

John McAfee’s Death Complicates U.S. Efforts to Seize His Assets June 29, 2021 https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...h-complicates-u-s-efforts-to-seize-his-assets
LOL good one, McAfee is always the first thing that I uninstall on PC's, it's crap! But quite sad that it ended this way, he must have been struggling, especially mentally. I kinda know how it feels, not that I have ever been jail, but he probably knew that the "party" was over. Nobody commits suicide for fun, know what I mean?
I wonder how its always pre-installed on every pcs, like every single one, I just stopped buying pc with OS because of that
Because McAfee pays PC manufacturers to pre-install it. This is actually a good thing, as PC manufacturers don't pocket the money, they reduce the price of PCs. If McAfee (or some other third party antivirus) wasn't installed, you would be paying more. If you don't want to use it, it's quick and easy to uninstall it and then run McAfee's removal tool, to remove any leftover traces. So in my opinion, it's not an issue. McAfee is a decent antivirus these days and is usually very light. There are better options, but it is very good nonetheless.
Yes, after Intel relinquished its majority stake in McAfee some years ago, it improved slowly. It's a respectable brand now, I think. You could do worse, I suppose. McAfee is in the portfolio of Thoma Bravo now, the same holding co. for Sophos and SolarWinds (which was majorly hacked recently). But it's still having trouble shaking off its dismal rep from WAY back, at least for some. I recall it used to be hell uninstalling it, even with its proprietary removal tool. Memories can be long-winded.
I know, when I started reading wilders and I opted for modular approach such as OS armor + custom firewall, so MCAfee was always in the way so to speak, I am not considering it bad, just I don't like difficult to uninstall pre-installed apps I am not sure I want
