the ghack news was about the cloud version I believe the journalist got confused ( the article was ambiguous to me) , thanks for clarification they work indeed, looks like Kaspersky cloud is one of the best free AVs and it is also much lighter than before

Is there are way to make this AV less verbose, while still allowing normally functioning? It seems to prompt a lot about programs like VPNs, bittorrent, etc.. Like I woke my PC this morning, and it asked if my ethernet adapter could be trusted. Just got another one regarding my wifi network.

Over the weekend I install this on my parents PC, but they would have no idea how to answer some of these prompts. So I am starting to get concerned this will not be the right AV for them.

Just uninstall KSeC (VPN) if they are not going to use it...

Did You set Interactive Mode or Auto Mode?

bittorrent prompt? maybe not trusted... use qbittorrent better :)

Set it as Trusted in FireWall -> Networks

I tried that last week. Not a big fan of it consistently using 1/2 GB of ram.

BD free uses max 300 -> 400 Mb so where do you get that 1 / 2 GB ram ? ...... i think you would say install size or is it 500 MB usage ?

I believe you are correct, my friend. Even less than 300-400 RAM depending on machine.

It used more on mine. It uses more than just about any other AV I have tested in recent years.

Anyway, this is getting off topic.

Of course it asks during install. It also asks about "marketing purposes". I declined and went on. No ads, no VPN, nothing.

To be honest it sometimes advertises the paid version or the add-ons like their password manager (although very rarely, like few times a year at most).

Or at least it is so with the older non-cloud version of Kaspersky free I am still using. It works and still updates av definitions just fine, although there haven't been any software updates since the cloud version debut. It also still installs fine on other computers, if you happen to keep the old standalone installer (which I luckily still do).

I intend to keep using that older non-cloud version for some time. Are there any incentives to switch to the newer cloud version? (besides software updates)

Bitdefender free was slowing several computers (mine and my friends) to the point of very observable handicap. I thought it was the time to reinstall the OS and uninstalled the Bitdefender only as a afterthought... Windows run like new afterwards. The same behavior was replicable on all other affected computers.

For foreseeable future I wouldn't touch Bitdefender with 10 foot pole. Maybe the next decade (if I am desperate) ... :)

About 3 years ago, just checked - I wrote about the experience here and here... @Pat MacKnife seems our paths also crossed on that occasion: you also commented on that first time I commented on Bitdefender. :)

Anyway, it worked fine for a time and gradually worsened from there. After a year or so it was bad, like very bad, but as it was so very slowly getting worse that I was like the proverbial frog in a pot. I didn't noticed Bitdefender was the culprit until I uninstalled it as last ditch effort before OS reinstall. There was no indication in cpu usage or memory overhead, but after it's removal the difference was palpable. I still can't quite understand it.

Seeing right now on the Bitdefender Free thread that it gobbles RAM and disk space, and with my experience - as I said now I wouldn't touch it with 10 foot pole. Even worse, people were warning me about it but I was skeptical since Bitdefender gets such glowing reviews everywhere.

KAV free and KSC are exactly the same version:

Support (database updates will stop soon) people should switch to KSC free

Kaspersky Free support will soon be discontinued

After the support has ceased Kaspersky Free will not be able to update antivirus databases, it will be impossible to use the program. It's a good idea to switch to Kaspersky Security Cloud Free.

I tried to install KSC when it debuted, but there were some region related problems (my country is in Europe but not in EU)

If free KAV support stops, than I will have to migrate... In meantime, what really is the incentive to switch KAV free with KSC?
In this post it says KSC (in addition of KAV free functionality) also has System Watcher, Automatic Exploit, and Anti-Blocker... Most of which I've got covered with OSArmor and SysHardner/SWH (also UAC and SUA). I quite like my security setup right now, it's lean and mean. :)

    • System Watcher performs behavioral analysis and blocks even unknown threats based on their behavior. For example, if an application tries to encrypt too many files at the same time, it is likely ransomware and shouldn’t be permitted to do anything. System Watcher blocks such activity and rolls back changes made by malware. System Watcher used to be offered only as part of our premium solutions, but now it’s an integral component of Kaspersky Security Cloud Free.
    • Automatic Exploit Prevention is another behavioral component. It’s responsible for protection against malware that exploits vulnerabilities in popular applications and platforms (Java, Adobe Flash Player, Adobe Acrobat, Internet browsers, etc.) Most computers have these applications installed, and many bugs are found in them on a regular basis. Malefactors and hackers use these vulnerabilities to install and launch malware with the help of special programs called exploits on computers of users who don’t keep their software updated. Automatic Exploit Prevention can detect such attempts to exploit vulnerabilities by recognizing typical behavioral patterns and block them.
    • Anti-Blocker, as the name implies, protects devices from Trojan blockers, a type of malware that doesn’t encrypt files but rather blocks the entire computer and demands ransom. Even if such malware manages to find its way into the system, Anti-Blocker will help your device bypass the block and delete the malware.

Also can you opt out of KSN in KSC, as you can in KAV free?
Main reason I don't want to migrate to KSC is the cloud aspect of it, I don't like the idea of uploading personal stuff to the cloud.

    Interesting.
Thanks for the resources, they also have this gem of information:
    https://www.comss.ru/page.php?id=7180
(how to install Kaspersky Free 2021 MR3 Anti-Virus, the new version of the free antivirus Kaspersky Free 2021 using the Kaspersky Internet Security 2021 MR3 distribution kit)

I am using an old standalone installation of KAV free, it also automatically downloads newer version of KAV free but it's 20.0.14.0185(m), not the 21.3.10.391 (as shown at comss.ru).
I will try the comss.ru method go the newer version of KAV free. I just hope it's not limited to Russian in the GUI. :)

Does Kaspersky free play nice with Shadow Defender and Sandboxie?
I seem to remember some reported issues with SD but cannot locate the thread. Thanks
