A few days ago, CentOS Project Governing Board made a surprise announcement as informed by Red Hat team of shifting its full focus from current CentOS Linux to its future CentOS Stream.

This simply means, CentOS Linux 8, a rebuild of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 (RHEL 8), will end next year 2021 as it will no longer be maintained.
With CentOS transition announcement, it also seems obvious that some members of the CentOS community are now unhappy with this move.

Surprisingly, it now looks like CentOS project founder Greg Kurtzer is also not in favor of this decision. Hence, just a day after this news, he has initiated and led a new alternative project called Rocky Linux along with other team members.

As the new website says, Rocky Linux is a community-driven enterprise operating system designed to be 100% bug-for-bug compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

Nonetheless, it would be interesting to see could it become the alternative solution for people who now want to ditch CentOS Linux due to the “shift in direction” of CentOS project.

Whereas previously CentOS existed as a downstream build of its upstream vendor (it receives patches and updates after the upstream vendor does), it will be shifting to an upstream build (testing patches and updates before inclusion in the upstream vendor).

It has been almost two weeks since the announcement of dropping maintenance support for CentOS Linux and shifting full focus to its future CentOS Stream, which ultimately led to the creation of a new alternative Rocky Linux by CentOS creator Greg Kurtzer itself.

Now, in the very first community update, Rocky Linux Community Manager Jordan Pisaniello has shared all the progress done so far and updates for future releases of Rocky Linux.

The team has targeted 2021 Q2 that includes April, May, and June to deliver the first release of Rocky Linux.
The core team is already laying down the infrastructure to deliver and support an initial release. It has also selected AWS (Amazon Web Services) as the primary build platform for the development of Rocky Linux.

As of now, Rocky Linux has no exact ETA for even a release candidate availability. However, the team will soon share a timeline for the delivery of automatic package build infrastructures, installer testing readiness, package repository, and more.

Good pedigree (Princeton University) and totally reliable. Just be prepared for a bit of Yum work to pull in some software + dependencies. The net installer is the best option.

Rocky Linux—one of at least two new distributions created to fill the void left when CentOS Linux was discontinued by parent corporation Red Hat—announced general availability of Rocky Linux 8.4 today. Rocky Linux 8.4 is binary-compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.4, making it possible to run apps designed and tested only for RHEL without RHEL itself.
How to get Rocky Linux 8.4 (Green Obsidian)
Like any other Linux distro, you can simply download an ISO of Rocky Linux and install it from scratch. But since Rocky Linux is specifically intended to serve as an easy replacement for similar distributions, it comes with easy-to-use conversion scripts as well.

There is no supported migration path from one of Rocky Linux's earlier release candidate (RC) builds to today's production build—but interested users of other RHEL 8.4 binary-compatible distributions can use the free migrate2rocky tool for convenient, in-place migration to Green Obsidian that should not mess up existing users, installed software, etc.

Although Rocky Linux 8.4 is offered as a production-ready distribution today, one notable feature isn't available yet—support for Secure Boot, which the Rocky team describes as a "non-trivial process" to get going on a new distribution.
