BERLIN (AP) — German officials said police were conducting raids Monday targeting people suspected of involvement in organized crime, as part of a larger international bust coordinated by Europol.

More than 800 suspected criminals have been arrested worldwide after being tricked into using an FBI-run encrypted messaging app, officials say.
The operation, jointly conceived by Australia and the FBI, saw devices with the ANOM app secretly distributed among criminals, allowing police to monitor their chats about drug smuggling, money laundering and even murder plots.

Since 2019, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, in close coordination with the Australian Federal Police, strategically developed and covertly operated an encrypted device company, called ANOM, which grew to service more than 12 000 encrypted devices to over 300 criminal syndicates operating in more than 100 countries, including Italian organised crime, outlaw motorcycle gangs, and international drug trafficking organisations.

The goal of the new platform was to target global organised crime, drug trafficking, and money laundering organisations, regardless of where they operated, and offer an encrypted device with features sought by the organised crime networks, such as remote wipe and duress passwords, to persuade criminal networks to pivot to the device.

The FBI and the 16 other countries of the international coalition, supported by Europol and in coordination with the US Drug Enforcement Administration, then exploited the intelligence from the 27 million messages obtained and reviewed them over 18 months while ANOM’s criminal users discussed their criminal activities.

An anonymous tech geek posted a blog online in March, titled 'AN0M ENCRYPTED SCAM EXPOSED'

Blogger 'canyouguess67' posted a chilling warning to users of the AN0M app on March 29, warning people:
'STAY AWAY FROM ANOM IF YOU VALUE YOUR PRIVACY AND SAFETY,' the blogger wrote in an article, which has since been pulled down.

'THEY ARE COMPROMISED, LIARS AND YOUR DATA IS RUNNING VIA USA.'
In what now seems to be a telling clue, the blogger expressed serious concerns about the fact that the AN-M device he had tested 'was actually in constant contact with Google services' in both New South Wales, Australia and California.

Two men facing dozens of charges after an international organised crime operation say they’re not guilty.

The court action comes after an international operation centred around a chat app called AN0M, which was used for messaging by alleged offenders who believed it was encrypted and secure.
Two men who, between them, account for 175 of the charges, appeared in Hamilton District Court on Wednesday.

Both men will appear in court in August for a case review hearing, along with others facing charges linked to the same operation.
