The clock is ticking on Tik Tok -- Latest sell deadline is today:

"Deadline looms to sell US TikTok platform

Prospects for popular shortform video app TikTok remained unclear Friday, the Trump administration's latest deadline on China's ByteDance to sell the US TikTok platform.

The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States on November 25 pushed back the deadline by seven days to resolve the issue, which centers on White House threats to ban the popular social media app, which it says could be used for Chinese espionage..."

"TikTok sale deadline will pass, though regulators will hold off on enforcing divestiture

TikTok’s Chinese owner didn’t get a formal reprieve from the Friday deadline to divest the U.S. operations of its popular video app. But it appears to have gotten a bit more time...

The Treasury Department told TikTok executives Friday that it would not extend the deadline, but also said it won’t yet compel the sale,..

There is no formal extension, but no plans to enforce anything...No new deadline, even an informal one, was given for a deal’s completion..."

"TikTok just gave itself permission to collect biometric data on US users, including ‘faceprints and voiceprints’

A change to TikTok’s U.S. privacy policy on Wednesday introduced a new section that says the social video app “may collect biometric identifiers and biometric information” from its users’ content. This includes things like “faceprints and voiceprints,” the policy explained. Reached for comment, TikTok could not confirm what product developments necessitated the addition of biometric data to its list of disclosures about the information it automatically collects from users, but said it would ask for consent in the case such data collection practices began.

The biometric data collection details were introduced in the newly added section, “Image and Audio Information,” found under the heading of “Information we collect automatically” in the policy..."

"Biden revokes Trump’s TikTok and WeChat ban order, but White House says it’ll subject foreign-owned apps to a security review

President Biden is revoking the Trump administration orders that sought to ban TikTok, WeChat and other Chinese apps and replacing it with a new security review that could prompt fresh steps to restrict those or other apps.

A new executive order will create a process to scrutinize whether apps controlled by a foreign adversary present risks to U.S. national security and the security of Americans’ sensitive personal data, the White House said Wednesday. After the review, the government can “take action, as appropriate,” the administration said in a fact sheet..."

    FYI

Criteria under President Biden's new Executive Order:

"...potential indicators of risk relating to connected software applications include: ownership, control, or management by persons that support a foreign adversary’s military, intelligence, or proliferation activities; use of the connected software application to conduct surveillance that enables espionage, including through a foreign adversary’s access to sensitive or confidential government or business information, or sensitive personal data; ownership, control, or management of connected software applications by persons subject to coercion or cooption by a foreign adversary; ownership, control, or management of connected software applications by persons involved in malicious cyber activities; a lack of thorough and reliable third-party auditing of connected software applications; the scope and sensitivity of the data collected; the number and sensitivity of the users of the connected software application; and the extent to which identified risks have been or can be addressed by independently verifiable measures..."
