    I ran win updates today. Got only .NET preview, no KB5003214 yet. I'm on 20H2.

    itman, in my system, 20H2 pro) searchapp.exe calls out a tad before I login (it's hard to tell timing exactly), and I haven't installed that KB with News and junk yet. My firewall resolves it to bing.com. After login, backgroundtaskhost.exe also wants out to bing. I have no idea what it's doing, nor how to find out.

    My IPs are identical to yours except the last octet which here is .200. Whatismyipaddress says it's a.0001-a-msedge.net. The other IP will show dc instead of a.
    Just wanted to add my 2c, since I think this sort of behavior has been on before.
    But the big puzzler is that you see explorer, and not cortana or search. Weird.

    Correct. I realized afterwards that this probably existed prior to the implementation of the "News and features" feature.

    This KB5003214 preview is optional for me today. How come the .Net Previews are not optional.

    No issues here on this regards. However, I have EnableFeeds disabled per below which is the workaround as far as I am concerned:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Feeds]
    "EnableFeeds"=dword:00000000

    I'm not entirely sure what time period there is between when "News and features" is set to rise up (old toast notify method) and not about to stress over dissecting that particular schedule. It doesn't seem to be for me annoying on this 20H2 but am content and interested if Windows Gurus is going to or not allow it as an option to disable.

    BTW thanks for the regfile in case it gets silly with frequently interfering.

    FYI.

    In regards to anyone recently that has installed KB5003214, this reg. hack:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Feeds]
    "EnableFeeds"=dword:00000000
    it doesn't work anymore.

    That's all I am going to say about this since I am convinced everything posted in this forum gets reported to Microsoft.

    The same registry key can be set through Gpedit. I hope that they don't remove that option also.

    Are you sure Group Policy option is actually disabling "News and features" telemetry? Or, just disabling its desktop toolbar feature?

    BTW - O&O Shutup 10 just released a new 21H1 version with "supposedly" a mitigation to block "News and features" telemetry. I would stay away from that option since I believe its based on the initial KB5003214 release version registry settings. Stinking MS is doing its darnedest to make sure this telemetry is not disabled. That implies its worth big $$$ to them.:shifty: Oops - i said I wasn't going to talk about this.:argh:

    It changes that same key value that you've mentioned but IDK about telemetry. Where can I see if telemetry is disabled?

    Since that registry key doesn't exist any more in the later release of KB5003214, you will have to wait till June like cumulative update to see if GP will cover where MS moved the entry.
    My opinion about MS telemetry is one never knows for sure if all its "tentacles" have been fully disabled regardless of hacks deployed to prevent it. The only way to completely stop data uploading of the telemetry is to block it which in this case is being done by explorer.exe. Also MS use of explorer.exe in this case is ill advised since many monitor all outbound Internet traffic from it due to the frequency of malware doing the same.

    I'm curious: she suggested June 24, why?
    Normally, that late, is patch C schedule or something like that, and I get .net preview when I delay so long and resume. But it then goes to check for updates which I don't like, due to the .net thingie and whatever else it wants to do.

    She suggests something that caught my attention and might be related: delay, but don't click resume. Windows will do its patches in a day or two without the previews. Any comments on that?

    act8192, usually, Susan makes a decision to lift the DEFCON meter (for updates) about a week before the end of the month, unless she sees something real bad. I believe that's why she stated June 24.

    I started doing it a bit earlier to avoid previews. This month I'll follow what she wrote.
    Thanks, JR.
