I was looking at one of my bookmarked sites and discovered there's a cumulative update available for Beta channel Insiders. It didn't install very smoothly on here but did finally go thru and there was a servicing stack update in there also. Still didn't get News and Interests on the taskbar so forget it.

Winver is 19043.1023, one step ahead of Release people. :) KB5003214

    Source and changelog

I notice every entry in the changelog starts off with "We fixed an issue..." Kind of annoying, right?

LOL, I have done some reading and lots of people also had problems when upgrading from Win 10 1909 to Win 10 20H2, so I decided I'm not going to do it. These upgrades are sometimes worse than being infected with malware, it's not worth it. I really got scared when I read about the issues it caused for certain people.

I'm having a couple of minor problems with Win 10 1909 which was caused by some update, so I'm going to reset it to factory settings and then NEVER update it again. I also never updated Win XP and Win 8.1 without encountering any malware problems. I might only install patches for severe security bugs, at least if it's possible because the current Windows Update is a disaster in Win 10.

I think you are stating the obvious.

I don't see a problem with reassuring folk that everything is not about gloom and doom.

Yeah I agree with you. I think Rasheed is being too lazy to install macrium free which takes 2 min and make a backup, and just update. If you have any issues, you can roll back. @Rasheed187 You sound more like some conspiracy theorist that thinks the Earth is flat. Some people have issues with win10 updates, and some don't, but generally people don't, or only minor ones. So you can't know without trying. How can you decide "I'm staying on 1909 no matter what". Wasn't 1909 not supported anymore too?

I'm sure that many more people didn't have problems. But people who don't have problems, often aren't going to post about it, so you are going to see plenty of posts from people who have problems, even when they are the minority.

I can confirm, the only problems I had was when I was last in the beta channel, otherwise it has always been smooth without any issues (and my machine is 8 years old). Not relying on a good backup/image system is definitely not recommended, 2 to 3 minutes restores can give you a real peace of mind...

TLS 1.3 is supposed to be enabled by default in 21H1.

I solved my problem after reading a few articles on 21H1 by going back to a Macrium image I had from May 8th, right before the May Updates. I then checked for updates and it started to download the May update again and offered me the 21H1 update too. I immediately clicked Download and Install on the 21H1 Update being offered and it downloaded and installed 21H1, this time taking about 20 minutes total because the 21H1 Update actually included everything from the May update too. This time everything went well and when it was done my system was perfect again. I read in the article that most of the changes for 21H1 were actually in the May Update and then 21H1 a week later just flipped the switch to turn them on. Somehow this didn't work on my system the first time around..

Anyway, once again, good old Macrium saved the day... I can't tell you how many times it's saved me over the past many years.... :)

I have not seen the 21H1 update yet. Might not be my turn to get it.

Neither did I, but I initiated the upgrade manually: https://download.microsoft.com/download/3/0/1/301147e7-e3d3-467e-a9eb-003a72840887/Windows10Upgrade9252.exe

Make sure to right-click on the file you just downloaded, go to Properties, then hit Unblock from the bottom right as it may be blocked since it was downloaded from the internet, if you don't do this before you run the file or extract it, then it may not install correctly due to insufficient privileges.

To prevent this automatic blocking of files in the future so you don't have to go unblocking every file you download to ensure it runs properly, check the guide in this thread:

I never unblocked a download before or knew about it. I would think you would not have to with a MS download.

This is true, but remember not all people with problems will post about it. And I just have a gut feeling it might go wrong on my system, especially with all of my security tools that are running. And besides that, I don't really need this new Windows version, I see nothing interesting.

LOL, no I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but it's simple not worth it. And Win 10 1909 isn't supported anymore but I believe Win Defender will keep receiving updates, this is the most important.

Perhaps I really should check it out, but I don't want to spend too much time on it. I did read you could even restore a non-booting system, is this true?

Based on my experience, if you don't mess with Windows too much in terms of security, then for the most part Windows Updates and feature updates to new builds of Windows 10 will install without a hitch and won't cause any problems. There are rare exceptions, such as incompatibilities between new builds of Windows and certain drivers. Microsoft will delay upgrades to new builds on systems that may have such issues, once the issues are discovered. But there will be some who receive the upgrade before Microsoft knows about the issues. As well, there certainly have been a few buggy updates as of late.

It seems that hardening your system, or even running certain Windows 10 privacy software, can cause a lot of problems. I say that because Windows Update tends to cause issues for a number of users here, but on my main system that I use every day, I never have any issues with updates or upgrades to new builds. It's worth noting that I literally never wait for feedback on updates before install them, so that I can avoid potentially problematic ones. I just let Windows install updates when it wants to. I often wait to reboot to complete installing updates, simply as a matter of convenience - so that I can reboot when I want to. I only recently was offered build 2004 on this system, but it installed with no issues, just as I had expected. Now that I think of it, it did fail to reach the stage of rebooting to install the upgrade, but this was fixed by exiting from WiseVector, which I suspected may have been causing the issue. But I've had no issues since upgrading to build 2004. On my previous install of Windows 10 I had lots of issues trying to install new builds of Windows. But on that system I had hundreds of apps installed and had installed and uninstalled hundreds more, which had led to there being issues with Windows.

While new builds often don't offer any particular features that I feel I need, they usually provide better security, which is reason enough in my opinion to upgrade. It's easy to rollback to the previous build, if a new build causes problems.

I'll second that. I even go further, besides the automatic update check I also search for new updates/upgrades manually everyday and install whatever is available.

Agree 100%, 10 year old computer here and never had any issues installing updates, install them as soon as they come out. Running Configure Defender and Simple Windows Hardening, thats it, turned off some options in the Privacy settings, keeping it simple seems to work very well. Of course, all computers are different.

Same here. I was surprised to see how quickly my computer was updated to 21H1. No problems here, either.:)
