When I turn my computer on and click the Google Chrome icon I can access the internet. If I close Google Chrome and later click the Google Chrome icon it does nothing, I cannot access the internet. If I turn my computer off then turn it back on again I have no problem clicking the Google Chrome icon and accessing the internet. I have accessed Task Manager, Processes tab, and ended task of all displays of Google Chrome, when I do this I can, sometimes, click on the Google Chrome icon and access the internet. I have in Google Chrome advanced settings turned off "Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed". I have removed all Google Chrome extensions. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Google Chrome. Nothing I have done has resolved this problem. I am to the point of giving up and removing Google Chrome. Has any of our members experienced this problem and resolved it? If so, I would appreciate it if you would share how you fixed the problem. As always I appreciate all replies and would thank you in advance. John
uninstall chrome, delete the following folder and reinstall chrome: c:\users\john\appdata\local\google\
Did as you suggested, unfortunately it didn't work. Perhaps sometime down the road an update will fix it, who knows?
Hi John. I suggest you take a look at the page linked below and review the steps they recommend. Perhaps there is something there that you have not tried, like #4 Reset Chrome in safe mode? I wish you well! Google Chrome Not Opening
So when you close Chrome the normal way, do you sometimes see lingering Chrome processes still running in Task Manager?
Yes, I have accessed Task Manager, Processes tab, and ended task of all displays of Google Chrome, when I do this I can, sometimes, click on the Google Chrome icon and access the internet. I have in Google Chrome advanced settings turned off "Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed". This hasn't made any difference. Other than when I either first turn on my computer or when I turn my computer off then back on, can I access the browser.
Page42, will look again, I have with Firefox searched for articles experiencing the same problem but the suggestions and recommendations have not helped.
@jpcummins If you make a new user on your machine (just as a test) does that have the same problem? Do you use any system cleaners (such as CCleaner Health check) at all?
Same problem with a new user. I have at one time or another used system cleaners. But, for whatever it is worth, I have been very careful in what I allowed to be removed.
Here's your ez fix http://triplescomputers.com/blog/un...ocess-will-not-close-chrome-will-not-re-open/ Literally 3rd link lol (Was 3rd before I opened it again, then became 2nd)
Not worth my time and trouble, who knows I may look at Google Chrome's next new release. I would think that re-installing a program should have been all that was needed.
Chrome is the fastest and most secure browser there is. There's a reason all other browsers got pwned at pwn2win, but not Chrome! And also why every single browser uses Chromium for its core (except firefox forks lol) On top of that, firefox is just now introducing site isolation, where in chrome it's been here for quite a long time. I remember years ago, like 2 years ago maybe even 3, enabling experimental tweaks in chrome://flags about site isolation and stuff like that. Well now they're gone (they've been gone for quite some time now) because they're already implemented. And, I'm even gonna do a SPEED test using my chromium build and the newest firefox nightly, just to be on equal footing As you can see, I have literally the newest Chromium build bar the canary_asan one, which is actually NOT good for speed testing https://techdows.com/2013/12/canary-syzyasan.html and it performs badly speed-wise I will make a new post when I can, so you can see for yourself (and I'm so sure that I'm even saying this before I've done the test, see how sure I am? Hehe)
My Chromium flags (turned dark mode off for the benchmarks): Spoiler Here are my results from Chromium tests (this applies to all Chromium-based browsers, such as Brave Vivaldi Opera Chrome Edge etc.) https://u.cubeupload.com/YoCubeUpload/Chromiumresults.png Firefox Nightly results soon tm Tests used: Spoiler https://www.antutu.com/html5/ http://www.fishgl.com/ 400 fish 60fps https://krakenbenchmark.mozilla.org/ https://testdrive-archive.azurewebsites.net/performance/mazesolver/default.html https://www.principledtechnologies.com/benchmarkxprt/webxprt/2018/3_v5/ https://web.basemark.com/ https://browserbench.org/ https://www.wirple.com/bmark/ https://browserbench.org/ARES-6/ The only test that I'm not sure about is Jetstream because I was alttabbing and stuff. But then I ran another one where I was doing something in the background and got 120 (compared to 141) so it might actually be more than 141 if I do it again without doing anything else, just like the other tests. But damn this test takes like 10 mins alone.
@jpcummins When it happens if you open taskmanager and look for Windows Explorer under Processes tab, does the Chrome icon work again if you highlight Win Explorer and select Restart at bottom right ?
Running chromium stable and canary here (Win8+Win10pro), nothing like this. I dont use browser apps, no need to. To note: apps are not extensions! Code: chrome://extensions/ chrome://apps/
And here are the firefox tests: https://u.cubeupload.com/YoCubeUpload/Firefoxresults.png My settings and version of Firefox Spoiler Comparison Chromium vs Firefox, both latest builds at time of this post (92.0.4515.0 vs nightly 90.0a1 (2021-05-21) (64-bit)) Antutu, higher is better: 55728/58721 for Chromium vs 27983 for Firefox, however both runs of Chromium and Firefox showed errors, and I assume firefox has such low score because some features were unsupported or maybe blocked (fingerprinting or whatever) Mazesolver, lower is better: 20X20: 0.7 secs for Chromium after first run vs 2.2 secs for Firefox regardless of run 30X30: 1.3 secs for Chromium after first run vs 4.1 secs for Firefox after first run Kraken, lower is better: 820.0 and 818.1 ms for Chromium 1279.4 and 1270.7 ms for Firefox Web XPRT 3, higher is better: 239 for Chromium vs 221 for Firefox, although if you look at the individual ms you will see Chromium has a few that are half of Firefox's, but I will not argue with their score alghorithm, must be a reason for it ARES6, lower is better: 19.60ms for Chromium 47.67ms for Firefox Wirple, higher is better: 4964 score for Chromium 2086 score for Firefox MotionMark, higher is better: 596.53 +-4.29% for Chromium 276.84 +-3.20% for Firefox Speedometer, higher is better: 157.1 and 155 runs/minute for Chromium 105.4 and 107 runs/minute for Firefox Basemark Web 3, higher is better: 1552.37 and 1295.08 for Chromium 1010.05 and 973.55 for Firefox Jetstream, higher is better: 141.728 for Chromium (altho I was alt tabbing towards the second half so it could be bit more) 79.424 for Firefox As you can see, Firefox got absolutely slaughtered. I honestly thought Chromium would be faster but getting twice and more the score on some tests? Crazy! Anyway uninstalling firefox Oh I must also say that my Chromium build is compiled for avx2 processors so it might be faster than the average Chromium build, not sure about that If that doesn't convince OP then I give up Also, on Chromium wirple test I scored better than 93% of people using Chromium and Windows 10, while on Firefox wirple test I scored batter than 86% of people using Firefox and Windows 10. So that goes to show that in both browsers I score better than the vast vast majority of people, with only 7% difference. That could be due to my hardware (why I score so highly compared to avg person). But the fact there's only a 7% difference between the two means the results are comparable. It's not like on one browser I got insane results and then on other the results were slacking compared to the avg person using that browser. No. On both browsers I got top results. Furthermore, in Chromium I scored better than 95% of all users. While in Firefox I scored better than only 65% of all users. So despite Firefox being half as fast as Chromium, quite literally in the results, my hardware still carried me to scoring better than 65% of all people (that have done the test).
It is related to their pre-2018 related to resource management (threads, memory etc). Firefox Quantum (v57, late 2017) was designed create less processes to save resources such as RAM memory etc. There is some resemblance to nginx server. Early 2018 disaster struck computer industry. Speculative executions vulnerabilities - Spectre etc. Quantum design was outdated and Mozilla decided to go Chrome route with separation of pages in other processes. Anyway I am using Firefox and was never pwned via browser exploit. For me Firefox (especially on Linux) is secure enough.
