no one can notice every millisecond, fastest gamers reaction time is 100-200ms.

0.133 seconds (that's barely more than the 0.1111 secs we are talking about)

yeah my faulty laptopS all work super slow with WD enabled but the moment I install anything else they magically come to life. I'm done arguing with you. Use what you *imagine* is lighter. See ya

No problem, I will, but still think something wrong with your laptop if it does that.

There must be something seriously wrong with your laptop, or you are fooling us.
I do recommend a new, clean install.

This whole discussion reminds me on Norton, a decade ago,
when people didn't want to realize, that Norton changed to fast.

I can't think of an AV, or any other program for that matter, that generates so much debate here as Defender.

    I don't understand it,

It is always fascinating (and annoying) to see the amount of complaints and negative feedback that users of security forums make about Microsoft Defender; I have seen this tendency for years to reject this free, without ads, suitable by default and installed on each machine running an updated Windows operating system.

Is it a way to justify the hobby or shopping with security solutions? I really do not know.

To be fair, Microsoft Defender can have an above average impact on certain tasks and/or simply run poorly on certain hardware, but that does not mean that objectively it has a bigger general impact compared to other security solutions on the market.

I always see a group of users pointing out the smallest flaws of Microsoft Defender in testing (the classic MRG antiexploit test as if it were the holy grail and the silver bullet, the only metric to be achieved).

Anyway, no matter how good and safe Windows 10 becomes, there will always be ambassadors willing to criticize with all their might while ignoring the "competition".

What I don't get, and never have, is this perseveration on something like performance when it's been stated ad nauseum that this is going to vary from machine to machine. No amount of hot air is going to change this.

It's like there's this visceral drive to stick it to Microsoft or something, even in the face of cold logic and reason, as if Microsoft and its users and denizens actually care and are grief-stricken by these negative comments. Yeah, right.

So in these times, I just sit back, have a snack and enjoy the performance of my computer that has been running Defender nicely since it was built back in July 2020. If yours does the same running a 3rd party brand, that's fine too.

Speaking for myself I criticize it because I want it to continue to improve. I acknowledge that it has improved over time. The fact that it is free seems to be reason enough for many to call it good enough. Most paid solutions are more effective, have less false positives, and more control over the UI. People think it is light because there are no UI elements to tell you what it is doing. They just think Windows is slow. I would be more than happy to see this progress into something that will cause me to finally stop paying for 3rd party products. It is getting closer. But it isn't there yet.

My question is, has anyone here on Wilders ever been infected when using WD? Not me…

Never being infected using some AV doesn't mean much. If you don't encounter malware you can't say that your AV did good job. So more relevant question would be: did your AV save you from infection. For me it would be "no". So I've never been infected not using MD.

I have several old laptops, with 5400rpm HDD, 1.2-1.8 ghz dual core setups. Yes, WD trashes already slow HDD with massive amount of I/O reads/writes.
It's very annoying(when using these old slow laptops that im using), especially when i was working with Office suite, and suddenly whole system goes unusable, because of massive HDD usage by WD.
Then i tested ESET NOD32 and F-Secure, HDD trashing gone. Now i can actually use my old and slow laptops without random 10sec delays etc. The whole system is really more responsive.
As an AV, WD is really good, i've nothing against that.
For sure, SSD will help, but that does not remove possible "lag" caused by WD. It's still there, but you wont notice it much, because of speed of the SSD.

I agree and I have similar experience. Just checked today on our server and this is something I always encounter checking resource monitor:

    upload_2021-5-11_12-53-53.png

I also run script to update our software on server with MD enabled. Script checks network location for new executable versions, copy them locally and digitally signs them. With MD enabled it takes script to finish 2:48. If you repeat procedure right after first run has finished it takes script to end the same time.
If I disable MD script finishes in 54s.
If I run script from my desktop (with Panda installed) all operations are done through network, not locally and script finished in 1:32.
And that's my everyday experience with MD.

Agreed. Honestly I've never been infected using any AV. That is why I consider other factors important. False positives for one. I have had Windows installations trashed by false positives that caused AV to make me have to format and reinstall everything. And obviously performance, per the subject of this discussion.

From 54s to 1 min 32s, that's a 70% increase in time, jesus... Can't believe you guys still keep using AVs when there's way better and faster solutions

Yes I know remote increases the time a bit

WD is only a cog in the machine. And no, I have never been infected even when WD was turned (manually) off. (WD is on at system startup). I think that it is true that WD is somehow slower than other AV, but at least it has the smallest impacts on system and programs.

It's actually from 0:54 to 2:48 for MD and 0:54 to 1:32 for Panda over network while MD is turned on on server (destination). Luckily I usually update package only once or twice a day. :)

This simply isn't true. I see no difference in performance between my Win 10 laptop with Win Defender enabled and my Win 8.1 desktop without any AV. BTW, I didn't even know that the Intel Core i9 existed, if you're having big performance troubles, then you would almost think that something is wrong with your system, but I doubt it.

I would like to see Cylance home added to that test list.
