Tesla has previously provided guidance for first responders who encounter fires involving its EV batteries. Reignition of the battery can be a problem, because unlike gas-powered vehicles, even if the fire is extinguished, an EV battery still has stored energy. Tesla’s guidance suggests it’s better to let the fire burn out than continuing to try to put it out..."

Waymo, Alphabet’s self-driving car subsidiary, has reshuffled its top executive lineup. John Krafcik, Waymo’s CEO since 2015, announced on April 2 that he would be stepping down from his role. Krafcik is being replaced by former COO Tekedra Mawakana and former CTO Dmitri Dolgov and will remain as an advisor to the company.

While Krafcik didn’t explicitly state the reason for his departure, Waymo’s new leadership lineup suggests the company has acknowledged that the “fully self-driving cars are here” narrative is a bit fallacious.
Driverless technology has come a long way, but a lot more needs to be done.

The company has been testing autonomous driving on public roads since October in Beijing.

"Introducing unmanned services is an indispensable stage for the commercialization of autonomous driving," said Wang Yunpeng, general manager of autonomous driving technology at Baidu, adding that Apollo will launch driverless robotaxis in more Chinese cities in the future.

The main type of software powering self-driving cars is deep reinforcement learning, which is currently the most challenging and expensive branch of artificial intelligence. Training deep reinforcement learning models requires expensive compute resources. This is the same technology used in AI systems that have mastered complicated games such as Go, StarCraft 2, and Dota 2. Each of those projects cost millions of dollars in hardware resources alone.

Argo AI has made some waves in the autonomous vehicle space over the last few years, with investors Volkswagen and Ford working on cars that use its self-driving tech. The company suggests it's taken a significant step towards bringing autonomous vehicles to roads. Argo created a LiDAR sensor that's said to have a range of 400 meters, which it believes it the longest range of any current LiDAR sensor.

Argo is testing the sensor in some Ford Fusion Hybrid sedans and Ford Escape Hybrid SUVs, according to TechCrunch. By the end of the year, Argo plans to shift its test fleet entirely to 150 or so Escape Hybrids, which will all have the sensor.

Pony AI is currently testing its ADS in pilot robotaxi services in Guangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing in China as well as Irvine and Fremont in California. The current generation Pony AI sensor suite consists of cameras, radar and rotating lidar sensors from Hesai. Like most developmental ADS, the Pony hardware stack is a not particularly attractive system sitting on the roof of the car.

It’s the most specific time frame yet for the vehicle as well as potential commercialization of its autonomous vehicle business.
In March, GM CEO Mary Barra said the company was “confident” that Cruise would launch and commercialize operations “sooner than many people think.”
