    Windows 10 upgrade - Build 1909 to 20H2 - Not fun

Modern Dystopia Strikes Again! Today, I present an article and rant discussing an upgrade of Windows 10 Professional Edition Build 1909 to 20H2 on a serious-usage system, covering update process and speed, many unwarranted changes to various settings and tweaks, expired signatures for Defender AV services, file association nudges, headerbar messages, Office reactivation, explorer crash, CPU usage spikes, other bugs, annoyances and inconsistencies, and more. Enjoy. I mean, not.

So you wouldn't recommend to upgrade to Win 10 20H2? I will probably also need to perform this upgrade, because my Win 10 1909 version is broken after installing a couple of updates a few weeks ago. The Windows Store doesn't work anymore and same goes for the network, battery and volume control icons on the taskbar. So it's minor stuff, but I still don't like it.

And I forgot that the Nvidia GeForce MX 330 GPU also doesn't seem to do anything. So my plan is to disable tools like O&O ShutUp and Spybot Anti-Beacon and to disable my security tools when performing this update, and hopefully I won't regret it. BTW, if I understood correctly, will you be able to actually use the machine during this update that takes about 45 minutes?

You can upgrade, just be prepared for random nonsense settings change.

Wow really, 1909 already out of service? That's like the latest one before 2004 and 20H2, I think. But good on microsoft. People need to learn to update. And if they don't, force em. If I was MS, I would make every version before 20H2 out of service.

That's an unrealistic scenario, as there will always be some PCs which have issues with the most recent builds. So it makes sense to support a few builds.

But that's not a viable option for the average user because of the cost. Sure you can buy cheap licenses, but they are not legal.

OK I see. But to be honest, I'm still not sure whether I should upgrade or simply reset my machine, Win 10 1909 works pretty well. I just have this feeling that Win 10 20H2 might screw things up and then I will have to do a reset anyway. And yes, I know that Win 10 1909 isn't supported anymore but I don't care that much about security updates and functionality updates. And I also don't like the stupid name change from Win Defender to MS Defender.

I'm too lazy for that kind of stuff, I have no experience with these kind of things. But I forgot why I did wanted to upgrade to Win 10 20H2, it's because I then won't have to reinstall all of my apps again, not sure what I'm going to do. Perhaps I won't do anything, because I mostly browse the web, and most stuff is still working correctly on Win 10 1909. But I also wanted to make use of the Windows Store because you can only download Asphalt 9 from there, can you believe this stuff? :gack:

You can rollback from within Windows itself.
