No need to send system specs to the internet community but to Gavin's personal email is rock tight.
    http://www.microsoft.com/java/download/40fixes.htm
java fixes on VM, including your version 3805.
WS 5.6 is their own recommendation to take that. They should not downgrade a fine working version with installing some upgrade of any other software.
Isn't it surprising the most of the win98se community is running TDS without a problem from the first start?
Did you try it without Mcafee, to name an example? It should not conflict as it runs without a problem together on many other systems, or with NAV, NOD32, you name them.
But sometimes some settings are needed more specificly in an av to avoid conflicts with other programs. My system ran miles better when i long ago uninstalled mcafee, i had kept it even some time after online scans found a few dangerous viruses and trojans mcafee had not even noticed, (this was before i had TDS, those finds caused me to look for better protection and ran into TDS, so this is why i know it ran even on my system together), have tried various others which sometimes caused real disaster on my system while thousands of people are really happy with them, and even in the worst situations TDS kept running good without any problem.
Did you try with SP1 on IE6.0? A 25mb download must be changing something.

yea I know to send it straight to Gavin's email. That's what I meant.

I'm already updated on that new VM patch. Lile I said i'm pretty anal about stuff and I always keep up on new patches, updates, etc.. ;)

Sure is and this is the first program I can think of that ever gave me problems. Not knocking TDS I know it's an awesome program but it's weird that it won't work. When I upgrade to my new hardware i'll reinstall it. I was just going to reinstall it last night but what's the sense since i'll be putting in a new MB, CPU, ram etc.. in 2 weeks.

Yep I tried it without Mcafee. I tried everything you can think of.

The one thing that puzzles me is a while back in the dsl forum pertaining to my thread over there was you said when you run TDS and after a bit you hit crtl/alt/del you see TDS not responding just like I do. See but I let mine sit and didn't touch a thing for 5 hours it still said TDS not responding so I had to end it. That seems strange that you see it also but the program works for you. How long does scan run BTW?

Yes and it was the worst update I did. That's why I had to reformat my computer! windows update was giving me all kinds of problems after the update. ughh SP1 for IE6 is a nightmare. You can't uninstall it either. If your a frequent visitor of DSL reports like I am you'll see a ton of people using IE6 and SP1 having lots of issues - mainly the gif problem. So until M$ comes out with a fix for there supposely SP1 fix I won't update to that.

I had TDS running also with mcafee with not any problem. And that was with the old version TDS-2.
TDS-3 if i have lots running at the time start up with everything checked cost about 7 minutes, but many others do it faster. A full system scan varies depending on so many things, settings, system speed, etc etc etc
With the startup scanning i've seen it a few times but it was scanning and i know it's process and time it can take so i just let it be patiently, seeing some line written what it's scanning now, etc. During the FSS i never saw it in c+alt+d as not responding, only with the startup process.
You still might like to send Gavin the fabertoys page from the files started with TDS, i recommended to try out. As you're investigating system and updates i think you'll really love that nice and handy tool. Somebody found out that way for instance in a program not all files were started, only half of them, which was solved by getting one of the required system files in it's proper place, that kind of things.
Hunting for problems from your side you know the hardware and some of the files and software installed, Gavin knows the TDS and what should be and seems not to and might see thingall overlook.
It's the next thing i think to be able to deeper for you.
