Well, I would also fire the whole Win Updates team, because after installing a couple of updates for Win 10 1909, svchost.exe started to use 10% of CPU time, causing my laptop fans to spin all of the time. I have this feeling it might be caused by this update related to "servicing stack", and for some reason it can't be uninstalled, what the hell? So I think once again I will have to reset Windows to factory settings, and after that I will never update it, enough of this nonsense! Because who knows what will happen if I update it to Win 10 20H2.

If it were me I would make an image and go ahead and move forward. If it is fixed you are done and if not you can still go back. I'd take 20H2 over 1909.

Funny, I would take 1909 back any day, over any other Windows version except 8.1. The stablest for me by far. 20H2, was good performance-wise but I had the first update bork w/KB5000842 in recent memory, causing a machine reset b/c I didn't have the patience to wait for a magic fix.

Now this wasn't intended to reinforce the idea of clinging to 1909 but I actually can't blame you for being reluctant. I guess when the time is right, simply go for it. :)

From article: "So with the bare minimum installed, Windows and Office are taking up 66 gigs."
On my systems Windows 10 + Office + programs take around 30 GB of disk space. Since I have documents and personal data on other partitions / disks I think that 100 GB should be enough for system an apps. Of course I disabled hibernation (fast startup), reserved storage and other unneeded space wasting features.

Well now that I think it, a factory reset to the original Win 10 1909 will probably take me just as much time as upgrading to Win 10 20H2, if you count having to reinstall and reconfigure all of my apps, so I might take a shot at it. Is it true that an upgrade won't mess around with the files in the Documents and Downloads folder? And it also won't affect installed apps and Windows settings?

The thing is that if one small update basically broke Windows, then what will happen if I encounter problems with a major upgrade, know what I mean? For me it would be perfectly fine to go back to Win 10 1909 and to never install an update again. I never really updated Win XP and Win 8.1 and never had any problems related to malware, security patches for consumer PC's are highly overrated.

And is it just me or is Windows Update in Win 10 a hot mess? I see all kinds of updates related to Intel, Lenovo and Realtek and it's not clear which Windows update is essential and it seems like they all try to download and install at the same time. I can't remember it being this bad in Win XP and 8.1, what a joke.

My advice (for what it's worth) is the same as some other members have said, go up to the latest Win 10 version.
I do all updates and have never really had a problem with them. However I don't use 3rd party apps which alter Windows settings as I prefer to just do them from inside Windows itself.

Yes, perhaps I will disable Spybot Anti-Beacon and O&O ShutUp 10 before upgrading but I will probably enable them again, because Windows really shouldn't be phoning home to M$ that much. And in other news, it seems like M$ is planning to give the crappy Windows Store a major update, it was about time.

yes, it is. use the mct to dl the latest iso and run the installer. it will then ask you whether you'd like to upgrade or to do a clean install. some settings will be affected though. make sure you review all the settings after the upgrade has finished.

At the other end of the spectrum, Win10 can run in a small partition. I have Win10 21H1 running in a 10.0 GB partition. There is 4 MB of Free Space. Totally impractical of course. But it boots in 9 seconds.

In my main system, Win10, Office, etc take up 30 GB.

Yes, lately KB5000842 and KB5001330 have been causing issues, but overall, updates on here have been pretty good. It hasn't been enough to get me looking at the next update with cold sweat running down my face, lol. That one KB--.842 didn't actually break Windows, what it did was make it impossible to move on to the next version if it failed. You were frozen in place until it installed. I reset the machine and got it to update--it was an intolerable feeling to be stuck somewhere.

If/when you choose to update, I bet you'll be in a lot of good company. Lots of people on 1909, it seems, and many don't want to give it up. EOL is May 11th. :'(

Actually, today I saw that it's already being offered via Windows Update. I will first buy a new external SSD and make a back up of my most important files. But to be honest, I'm still not sure if I should update to Win 10 20H2, because what if it doesn't solve my current problems and makes things worse? Then I will be real p*ssed. Like I said, I don't really care about most security updates and new OS functionalities. Except for the new Windows Store that's coming up, but I'm sure it will suck.

Well, that's exactly what I'm afraid of, stupid issues that will waste my time. The problem that I'm currently having is caused by the AppX Deployment Service, it's causing one of the zillions of svchost.exe processes to constantly use 10% of CPU time. You can only fix it by killing it about 5 times before it will stop to auto-restart and after reboot it's back again. There is no way to disable this service since it's related to the Windows Store. So it's either back to Win 10 1909 (factory settings) or upgrade to Win 10 20H2 which may or may not fix it.

for my money, those so called w10 privacy tools are the culprit for your problems, not the updates.
if you do a clean install and skip those privacy tools, you'll be all good.
