Did you gknow? There be a new desktop! I have scribed a review of Gnome 40 desktop environment, tested in Fedora 34 beta, covering look and feel, ergonomics and many associated problems in the default design, new Activities, Gnome Tweaks, Extensions, desktop scaling, performance, search, tour, and more. Have fun, or something. https://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/gnome-40.html Cheers, Mrk
I dunno, I'm learning to live with the Ubuntu 20.04 Gnome man's land and at least I've got me software 'elf. It's not a 'Laughing Gnome' matter but it's fairy obvious it dwarfs any other problems with other systems. Luckily I'm too pixie-lated to care that the Gnome desktop philosophy has dumbed down to troll level. I've adapted. Ask the lawn ornaments. We will all adapt. I still see the Linux Gnome in my future, whatever the *piskeys say. *Although they live in Cornwall rather than the Isle of Mann.
But Ubuntu brings a dozen or so improvements that aren't there in the default gnome desktop - visible and resizable dock, desktop icons, window buttons, desktop scaling, etc. Mrk
And even Ubuntu needs tweaking. It's simple really: if you need a bunch of extensions to make it usable there's something wrong.
Well there's that. There have been changes to desktop management since 16.04 (I bypassed 18.04) but it seems to me that overall the changes balance out. Focal Fossa is fine for me 'out of the box'.
Ouch this hurts! Oh well, at least there are other desktop environments available. With their own shortcomings of course... Thanks for the review, btw!
The frustration over the drawbacks of the GNOME desktop has resulted in Makulu Linux Shift and Pop OS Cosmic Desktop to make it a more user friendly experience. That’s all the legwork you have to do make it usable is already taken care of for you. GNOME may want to make the traditional desktop irrelevant but enough people care to keep it alive, Mrk is too pessimistic in his review. People who use GNOME aren’t going along with the flow. Cheers!
So are the other distros I mentioned. The good thing about Linux is someone’s bad decisions can be reversed. Just because GNOME wants to follow a particular path doesn’t mean the community has to follow suit, Like the old Frank Sinatra song has it, “I can have it my way.” That’s the future of Linux.
That's not the future of Linux. Because that's not different from happened in the past 20 years. That's just status quo, and that means no new market. Mrk
I'm pretty convinced the future of Linux is to be more or less the same as its past. "One Code to rule them all, One Code to find them, One Code to bring them all and in the Linuxverse bind them."
