Win 7 was the only MS OS I ever liked. When it was on its way out I switched to macOS and Linux (Ubuntu).

I wish you would upgrade to Windows 10 because it would be good to here your opinions and feedback with making it secure and what security software you would recommend. You will eventually have to upgrade to windows 10 anyway because support for windows 8 ends in just 2 years.

No I didn't use System Safety Monitor because I didn't know of its existence when it came out, I did read about System Safety Monitor when I first came to this forum tho. But I didn't try it because most people had already moved on to better things like EQsecure.

My wife is still running 7 Pro. I have a laptop I use now and then still running Vista - and it works fine. If I decide to ditch 10 and return to 8.1 Pro, I'll stay with it until this rig dies. I figure with good security software I can ride it out. Given my age, by the time I need a new computer, I'll be drooling, wearing diapers, won't know who I am, and be living in a nursing home

I have a mate who still runs WinXP. But that's because he can no longer install Win95.

With brand new machine this year no doubt I will be contending with it. Not sure yet but I envision native Defender coupled with the likes of WiseVector. Along with the usual ShadowDefender & Sandboxie.

    That's brutal :)
These old GUIs bring back so many memories. Guess I'm getting old.
    Nostalgia fully occupies me tonight.

I like Windows 10, 8.1, 7, and even Vista, a lot. I liked XP as the time, but it seems incredibly dated these days in my opinion. I run Windows 10 on all my computers because in my case it works very well, so there's really no point in using an older OS. But in terms of usability, I'd happily use Vista or anything more recent.

Still using Windows 7 for a few specific needs(but with ESU updates), otherwise, I've moved on to 10 and Linux/Qubes OS.

Well this debate can last forever I guess. Why don’t we all agree to disagree :)

For me one of the most infuriating changes from MS after Windows 7 was deprecating the options to send a message or email with Task Scheduler. Why on earth would they do this!? I'm surprised more people don't mention this. It's one of the reasons why Win 7 Ultimate still remains my favourite version of Windows.

I know what you mean. The Windows 95 days were the most exciting. I still consider it the single greatest advancement in personal computing. Everything since then has been an incremental change.

What was the last version of WIndows that came on floppy disks.. 95? I remember that. My Favs were XP & 7 but 10's a big improvement on 8/8.1. With StartisBack++ or Open-Shell installed 10 is pretty good.

I did miss display a message option when I was using SRP, but I found workaround with Start a program option and then set msg as program with parameters.

Windows 98SE was my first experience with Windows. Explorer.exe use to crash often and it was a prime easy target for malware to hijack. Nightmarish but hey, we had fun chasing the bugs away right?

Windows XP was a bit better in comparison but still was a malware maker's dream machine.

I think the last version I had on floppy disk was actually Windows 3 or 3.1 because it was only about half a dozen disks not as many as 14 (Windows 95).. I must have upgraded to a CD-ROM by the time Windows 95 came along :) WIndows 7, 10 & XP (in that order) get my votes for 'best windows version' mainly for their stability. After Windows 7 MS really started to dumb down the interface making it more difficult to tweak it in settings/control panel.

Thanks Minimalist. Still, there was no need for MS to deprecate this. Maybe even worse was denying Applocker feature to consumers, available in the Ultimate version of Win 7, but no such availability in win 10, except for Enterprise, Education and Server.

To set the record straight, in spite of what someone else said, @bellgamin did not say Windows 7 is the best; it was mentioned in the article as the best Windows version ever.

I don't think it's something most people use. I'm a long time Windows user and I never even knew that you could do that until I saw your post.

Agreed, it's probably not used by many, but I made good use of them, especially the Display a message option whenever Windows firewall blocked a program. Regardless, it makes no sense that MS would remove these features in future builds.

Not to sound argumentative but the thread title states "It's official" when the opinion of a tech writer on a website does not make it official. It is still opinion. I believe that you are stating that this is the opinion of the article and not the thread starter and I agree. I also agree that Windows 7 probably was the best version of Windows in many ways. My point? Not sure... I guess I'm agreeing with you that the opinion of an article is not necessarily the opinion of the one that posted it. I think. o_O

Agree if you did nothing to change/modify the default XP install. Adding a good firewall
and or HIPS. (not XP built-in firewall)
Using programs like nLite or XPlite Pro to slim down/remove core Windows components.
Sandbox the browser(s) and use privacy/security extensions. Tweak registry and maybe add
some SRP rules. Use virtualization like VM or SD and use a good reliable backup program. Create
a LUA for daily usage and only use the Admin account when needed. Doesn't mean it's still
not vulnerable, but leaving it stock makes it even more prone to be exploited.
