I just noticed on my upgrade to windows 10 on pc and laptop, I have no settings migrated. It has no presence in %userprofile%, programdata folder or registry, so where are the settings stored?
I am not sure since I never tried but I think its better if you are moving from one system to a newer one to start from scratch. Perhaps some of the settings in the old Sandboxie.ini file wont work in the new system. Some files locations are different, some names of folders are different also. So, IMO, it makes better sense to start from 0. Bo
Yes Bo, I absolutely agree with you. All systems are different , hardware, software, registry and in a new system, new relationships between one thing and another and a unique environment. An old template for another computer or transferring the sandboxie.ini won't necessarily work completely on a new system. There may be aspects that are transferable and some things might work but we can't guarantee that. I suppose, when moving from one computer to another, you can use your old Sandboxie.ini as a sort of guide to what you usually do (if your hardware and software is going to be similar) and then start fresh with that in mind on your new system and Sandboxie configuration. Bo's put it succinctly and it's good advice. I suppose, even on your existing pc (if you change hardware and software, or 'upgrade' a lot) you could also run into similar problems with mismatched configuration using an old saved Sandboxie.ini This is a thing that people commonly forget when they have glitches...the changes that they have made themselves to a system, and an old configuration not meeting the new demand. and breakdown of certain relationships. System 'integrity' in a living breathing system is very important.. Over the years I'm sure we have all downloaded and installed a piece of software that has upset the system and 'wrecked the whole shop'
I understand what you stating, but sandboxie is one of those programs where it can take a while to get things working right, so has bigger benefits to preserving mature saved configuration. When sandboxie was first launch I still had a popup which suggested changes due to the OS configuration, I accepted those changes, and have no ill affects, it works like it did before. The configuration for my sandboxie took a fair amount of hours to get right, not fun having to research things again.
You are thinking doing what you are doing saves you time. In the short run that might be so, but in the long run, when you start experiencing issues, some might be related to that W7 ini file that you migrated to W10, And even after you waste a lot of time looking for the cause of the problem, you will not find the answer as you will not link this problem/s to the old ini. Chrcol, this is just my opinion, but doing what you are doing is a bad shortcut. And the more settings and sanboxes you have in use, the chances you will run into issues become greater. Bo
I only sandbox firefox The way I have always approached software is that there should always be a migration path whether, its official save settings and restore feature or just migrating registry/config files. I do generally think its poor design if migrate/upgrade = reconfigure from scratch, but at same time I understand on some occasions it might be needed such as if there is major feature changes. In this case though I have just one sandbox configured, and in examining the configuration, where paths are mentioned there is no path changes, and it detected the change in 3rd party files for the compatibility flags (for new 3rd party changes), as I said before I remember when working on sandboxie going through every option one at a time reading documentation and it was a very slow process, and if it did break then I probably would take the course of action you suggested and start again. So yes it did save me time 2 mins to copy file, and everything is working. Although bear in mind I already know certain things about the relationship between the systems, the paths for direct paths e.g. I know are unchanged, I know install path for browser is unchanged, and I know I am running on the same hardware, I also know that the install path to windows binaries and libraries is unchanged on both windows versions. So I knew before hand migrating the configuration was extremely unlikely to have any issue. Especially when examining the contents of it. However what I did do after reading your posts, I went through the sandbox configuration for "software compatibility" and disabled some older compatibility templates which are no longer applicable. Nothing was broken but it was probably right to only apply the flags for the software on the system. So I appreciate the comments and thank you also to Buster_BSA for the information.
