    Not sure if this should go to Linux or Mac forum. It involves both. Any advice greatly appreciated.

    MY old G4 wont boot anymore so pulled the HDDs and placed one in a PC I have that has a Windows7 HD (disconnected) and a connected Mint HD. I want to look for some files I overlooked when I got the data off before the G4 gave up. The HDs are formatted HFS+ and if possible I want to copy the data straight to my iMac.

    There's a number of options I have.

    Get an IDE to USB adapter
    Install the windows version of freeware program HFS Explorer (but its dependent on java)
    Download a free to try program (haven't checked out if there's any dependencies)
    Dont install anything and use Linux which allows you to browse the HDD.

    Pros and cons taken into account, I'm trying the last option, but networking in Linux is above my pay grade. I have a couple of questions:

    Ive connected the iMac and LinuxMint PC directly using an ethernet crossover cable. I cant get them to see each other. Ive disabled the FW in both computers and allowed file sharing in iMac, but I don't how to set up Mint. It keeps giving me an ethernet cable disconnected and you are now offline notice.

    Permissions
    On Mint I can browse the 2 partitions and all the Folders show, but some of the folder contents won't let me in and deny access because I don't have permission. If I can get Catalina and Mint to see each other is there any way I could change these permissions from the Mac, or can I do that somehow in Mint?

    @Mrkvonic -- any suggestions?

    @Reality -- This should probably be moved to the UNIX/Linux forum. Your post makes me think the situation is more Linux than Mac.

    @bellgamin - yes I think perhaps you're right. I'll wait a bit though and see if anyone answers the Mac side of things since the post is here now. If nothing turns up I'll ask a Mod to move it.
