I have a pc with Windows 10, build 1709 ( it's not my main pc ! ). I can't update it: neither security updates nor build updates. Normal Windows Update doesn't work. I tried with Media Creation Tool, and after the reboot says " Impossible to complete the update ". I tried also:

    Wureset - W10Upgrade - W 10 manual Updates: no one works.

    Any advice ?

If it were my machine I would do a clean install of 20H2 with iso file after saving any pics and docs onto a memory stick or external drive.

Thank you, I thought so, but I would save my installed third part software, so I have some doubt.

Microsoft renewed the update routine after 1709 arrived, at least your windows 1709 had no updates for nearly 2 years (9. April 2019) - that's not acceptable.

Create a boot stick with the "media creation tool" (mct)
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
and install from scratch after data backup.

Theoretically you could try offline update to 1803 then 1809 then 1903 then 2004. All these updated done offline using respective iso files and clicking setup.exe. I omitted 1909 on purpose, because that version was binary-wise the same as 1903 version.
That is a lot of work and does not guarantee anything. Good, old backup, format c: command and clean install after that may take less time.

Its not that much work. You download the isos, you run the setup, you install. So its a few installs and downloads vs 1, but in the latter case u also gotta backup

Also try these fixes (open cmd):

    sc config wuauserv start= auto
    sc config bits start= auto
    sc config DcomLaunch start= auto
    net stop wuauserv
    net start wuauserv
    net stop bits
    net start bits
    net start DcomLaunch

    and this https://www.zdnet.com/article/windows-update-failed-here-are-10-fixes-you-can-try/

Also check the logs if it still fails:

    Share Setuperr.log and Setupact.log from
C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther - This log is mandatory for analysis
    AND
C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback\ - This log is not mandatory but useful for analysis

Note - These folders may be hidden, so you will have to do File Explorer > View > Options > View tab > Select Show hidden files, folders and drives.

    delete these https://img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/BB1adEVU.img?h=461&w=799&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=f

Maybe use build 1709 iso as a source for wim file and use DISM to repair (RestoreHealth) Windows before trying to upgrade.
    Code:
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /AnalyzeComponentStore
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /source:F:\Sources\Install.wim:1 /LimitAccess
These commands are from article on ubackup.com called "How to Use DISM Offline Repair Windows 10?".
Maybe these command or other commands mentioned in article will print some useful info. It is hard to recommend anything even by experts without any logs.

I had to wait the week end. You all gave to me many tips for my problem. I was tempted by a clean install; I can't download the ISO in a USB drive: as when I simply tried to update Windows, Media Tool begin the process, work, work, and then says " impossible to complete. " Luckily I have the other tips to try, but today I'm bored with 10 !

WHen u run the media tool it should ask you to upgrade or to create iso. Is that not the case?

    Redownload https://www.microsoft.com/bg-bg/software-download/windows10

    Or just directly download iso
