Let us reflect. Ponder. Reminisce. Behold, an article reviewing the best Linux distribution of 2016-2020, with focus on aesthetics, ease of use, stability, and long-term support. Have fun. https://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/best-distro-2016-2020.html Cheers, Mrk
I’m a KDE diehard so I’ll get that bias out in the open to start with. Thing is and despite all the promoted improvements for Plasma5 my feeling is much more was lost to get there. Nothing competes with YAWP for instance. Instead we get ‘Weather Report’ as standard which often throws up “no location was found for ….etc” or Gnome Weather that also fails to find a lot of local conditions. You can of course use the ‘Weather Widget’ as a still not so good alternative providing your distro includes the ‘XmlListModel’ dependency by default or you know how to install it otherwise. Likewise the KDE4 System Monitor is light years better than the new, flat and boring Plasma5 offering and I’m not even going to mention what you could do with SuperKaramba before that too was lost. Then there’s the themes which you could mix and match using KDE4 so if you liked the Phoenix analog clock with the Blue Sora desktop theme then so be it but no more with Plasma5. Why not? Linux is meant to be all about choice but now it’s gone down the same road as Windows. The only good thing is the customizations are still free and you don’t need to shell out for a set of WindowBlinds skins to get something different. Since CentOS dropped KDE and then decided to self destruct anyway I moved over to Springdale. Designed and built from Red Hat sources long before CentOS was born by the IT staff at Princeton University (initially for their own use) I can now keep my preferred KDE4 via version 7.9 until at least 2024 so for me this is the best distro.
Thanks for the review. I'm not a fan of KDE. For me the best desktop is Debian with Gnome DE, dash to panel extension and plank. Cheers, François
