I need a free online virus scanner

Could you please recommend some free virus and malware scanners, other than 'ESET Online Scanner' which I already know about. I am using Windows XP and Windows 7. I am not looking for real time scanners or virus guards. I need only those I can use to scan the computers for virus, malware etc. from time to time, when I want.

 

Also of note is many of the AV vendor based online scanners don't run on XP. Additionally, many won't work for Win 7 unless the SP's installed that support SHA-2.

 

Thank you for your reply. This is an enormous list. I don't have the expertise or experience to choose from this. Some recommendations from members here will be most valued and appreciated.

with Win7 as I use it.

Use them in above order.

Not online-scanners, but portable, and effective.

ADW cleaner works fine in XP.

It is waaay too aggressive in my opinion. Many FPs. Seems designed mainly for advanced users.

 

Regarding HitmanPro,

HitmanPro is an on demand scanner.
HitmanPro.Alert provides real time protection.
HMP and HMP.A are two different products (although HMP is also a part of HMP.A).

 

HitmanPro is a cloud-based, on-demand scanner. The free version will point you to the file locations of any bad stuff but only the paid-for version will actually remove it. I believe XP is still supported, I recall Mark Loman saying something to that effect. Correct me if mistaken on that.

Since I don't have Secure Boot on here, I do run TDSS Killer by Kaspersky rarely if I'm concerned about something I downloaded that's not familiar.

I use Rogue Killer on rare occasions, it takes longer than many others but is extremely thorough. Not sure if it runs on XP. The nags to upgrade to paid version pops out and can be annoying but the scanner is free to use and it's actually pretty good.

 

Yep! Absolutely correct. NPE has been known to destroy Windows to the point the machine won't boot any more. If you're confident in knowing what its detection/s means, and have a backup of your system, NPE on its own is fine to run. Just be very careful what you allow NPE to remove.

 

The softwares you recommend are both anti-rootkits and Melita has not requested this type of software.
If I had to recommend an anti-rootkit software to use in a Windows XP (32-bit) OS I would recommend:

Other tools may have incompatibilities that could harm the OS.

 

The most important component of the security configuration in a Windows XP OS is the browser.
With an up-to-date browser, the possibility of encountering malware and thus needing any anti malware scans takes a back seat.

 

All the scanners I listed happen to be in the list JR Viejo posted above. I only mentioned TDSS Killer as one I personally use because of no Secure Boot--as with any of them, it's not a "recommendation." The OP was asking for personal experiences with the software. .

Rogue Killer is not an "anti rootkit;" it's an anti-malware in a paid version, a free on-demand scanner in free version. I said this in my post--if there is a "next time," please read first before reacting, OK?. I'm actually sorry to have to say that.

Now if any scanner I mentioned would potentially cause "harm" to an OS, I would like documentation of that for my own learning experience! I'm referring to HitmanPro, specifically. Here is what it seems to be compatible with:
