The federal government has released a discussion paper on the first round of its $22 million 5G Innovation Initiative to seek feedback from interested parties.

The initiative, anticipated to start in the first half of 2021, aims to support emerging businesses wanting to trial new uses of 5G connectivity through financial grants. The second round of grants is expected to come in the first quarter of 2022.

“Businesses that can develop 5G applications that improve productivity will have a significant ‘first mover’ advantage, and I want to encourage companies in Australia to adopt new digital technologies of benefit to the economy,” he said.
“2021 will be the ‘Year of 5G’, and our investment in these 5G trials supports this.”

China will account for nearly 80 per cent – or 175 million – of a projected 220 million global 5G subscriptions by the end of the year, according to a new report by Swedish telecommunications equipment maker Ericsson.

“We have increased our estimate for the number of 5G subscriptions at the end of 2020 … mainly due to a faster uptake in China than previously expected, driven by a national strategic focus, intense competition between service providers and more affordable 5G smartphones from several vendors,” the company said in the November 2020 Ericsson Mobility Report released on Monday.

n its report on Monday, Ericsson projected that more than 1 billion people globally, or 15 per cent of the world’s population, will live in an area that has 5G coverage rolled out by the end of the year, as adoption of the next-generation network and devices speeds up globally despite uncertainties caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

By 2026, 60 per cent of the world’s population will have access to 5G coverage, with subscriptions forecast to reach 3.5 billion, the report said.

The new Inseego M2000 hotspot supports low, mid and high-band 5G as well as 7-band aggregation on T-Mobile's 4G LTE network. Inseego says it got up to 2Gbps in field tests, although for most people on T-Mobile's mid-band 5G network, we'd expect speeds around 300-500Mbps. Rural users on T-Mobile's low-band 5G network will get LTE-like speeds.

T-Mobile has been asked to stop advertising its 5G network as more reliable than the competition by the National Advertising Review Board (NARB), which investigated T-Mobile’s claims made primarily in an ad featuring celebrity scientist Bill Nye after complaints from Verizon earlier this year.
But the NARB also says T-Mobile shouldn’t have to mention the speed of its network when broadly discussing coverage superiority in future ads

T-Mobile has said it will comply with the recommendation. But it cast the recommendations as a partial win in a statement saying it “appreciates that the panel agreed that T-Mobile can continue to advertise its superior 5G coverage without qualification.”

T-Mobile’s compliance is notable because telecom giants don’t have to follow the recommendations offered by the NARB, which, as a self-regulatory body under the umbrella of a nonprofit organization, has no governmental regulatory power. Verizon's "nationwide 5G" may be seriously slowing down your new iPhone, a problem that also affects other new 5G phones such as the Google Pixel 5 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. The fix? Turning off 5G if you can.

In October, Verizon introduced "nationwide 5G" based on dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS), which reuses parts of 4G channels for 5G. Phones will automatically prefer a 5G network over a 4G one, so Verizon customers will see that coveted 5G icon pop up. But it's all for show.

"For most customers, performance on our 5G nationwide network will be similar to 4G. [DSS] is new technology and we're continuing to modify it as we go. We expect performance improvement through 2021 and beyond," a Verizon spokesperson said.
On an iPhone 12 Pro in New York City, Verizon's 5G data transfer speeds are lower than 4G speeds. It shouldn't be that way.

Verizon isn't alone in going backward with 5G performance. We also found in our 26-city Fastest Mobile Networks tests that AT&T's low-band "nationwide" 5G is often slower than AT&T's 4G network.

"The decision to use the 4G versus 5G network is based on RF conditions, but the preference is 5G where available. Again, experiences for individual customers might be different," Verizon told me.

Lower the frequency, the longer the wavelength and less towers needed but also speed lower.
Higher the frequency, the shorter the wavelength and more towers needed but speed higher.
