In an interview with CNET, Schiller is asked about the growing popularity of Chromebooks for education, an important battleground for Apple where it’s been losing ground to Google’s machines. Schiller gives a particularly spicy answer, saying that while iPads are the “ultimate tool for a child to learn on,” kids with Chromebooks are “not going to succeed.”

So there you have it. If you want your child to do their best in school, ignore the cheap and cheerful Chromebooks and go for a pricier Apple product they’ll find more engaging.
It’s not a particularly nuanced rebuttal to the success of Chromebooks, but it is part of a wider strategy for Apple. Over the past few years it’s attempted to counter Google’s rise by reaching out to educators and highlighting the multimedia potential of the iPad.

I read an interesting editorial by Android Police's Editor-in-Chief, David Ruddock, about Chrome dying on the vine and becoming stale. You should read it yourself, but the general vibe is that development on Chrome OS has all but stopped, and that makes a Chromebook a poor choice for anyone who wants a laptop.
He's right, in a way. He's also wrong in a way. But most of all, I think he doesn't account for the simple fact that everyone wants something different from every single piece of tech they buy.

His reasons are mostly spot-on: plenty of Android apps suck on anything except a phone; PWA (Progressive Web App) development seems to have all but stalled; and there are things that a Chromebook is not the right tool to use if you want to do them. I blame Google's abandonment of tablets as the reason, though it never seemed to really care about them in the first place.

Linux really makes a Chromebook a powerful machine (I even run Windows 7 through a VM on my Pixelbook using Linux) but it's not a consumer-friendly solution.

Chrome OS has stalled out

Features that never seem to come
A lack of native applications may be Chrome's biggest structural problem in the long term, but in the here and now, the Chrome team has simply failed to innovate in ways that the platform so desperately needs to remain competitive with Windows and Mac OS.

I would never go so far as to say Chromebooks are without function—they have many perfectly valid uses. They are the true spiritual successors to the netbooks of yore.
But as things stand, I don't ever see them becoming more than that.

When Google first launched Chromebooks, Google promised three years of free automatic updates. Since then, Google has significantly increased the number of years it will support Chromebooks. Chromebooks receives regular updates from Google until it reaches its Auto Update Expiration (“AUE”).

Google today announced that it is extending the AUE on new devices by up to 8 years. Yes, Google promises free automatic updates until June 2028 for the latest Chromebooks like Lenovo 10e Chromebook Tablet and Acer Chromebook 712. The automatic updates include both security fixes and new features.

With the extended years of automatic updates, Chromebooks can offer a better return on investment for the education market customers when compared to Microsoft Windows devices. To support this extended support, Google has increased the price of the Chrome Education Upgrade from $30 to $38.

The “Made for Google” program ensures cases, chargers, and other accessories are compatible with Pixel phones and laptops. The Chrome OS team is now starting a similar certification effort called “Works With Chromebook.”

This program sees Google test accessories to “ensure they comply with Chromebook’s compatibility standard.” Certified product types include mice, keyboards, cables, connectors, power adapters, and hubs.

Find accessories that will work seamlessly with your Chromebook. Look for the Works With Chromebook badge on products that are tested and proven to meet Chromebook compatibility standards.
One particular area this program can help in is keyboards.
Hopefully, this certification will see an uptick in Chrome-specific keyboards, given the platform’s growth.

I could break down the verdict into this sentence: Chrome OS is a great browser, but it isn't a great OS. My experience reminds me of the one I had on the iPad (pre-iOS 13, I should note). A lot of things are great for a specific set of purposes, but once I leave that comfort zone, I start running into issues that make me want to return to a proper desktop OS.

On my Chromebook, the situation got better once I stopped trying to run Android and Linux apps and stuck with capable web apps as much as possible instead. However, I still miss my familiar, friction-free image editing software on the machine, and I'd love to see proper third-party cloud storage support.

Earlier this month, I had the chance to review Lenovo's new IdeaPad Flex 5 Chromebook. It's a great machine, with an excellent build quality and guaranteed Chrome OS updates for the next eight years, but it had one fault that kept me from wholeheartedly recommending the laptop — it only had 4GB of RAM.

From my experience, Chrome OS still runs relatively well on low-end processors like Intel's N-series Celerons and ARM-based MediaTek chips. However, RAM is becoming a critical bottleneck for the operating system, especially on models with 4GB of memory or less. On the Lenovo Flex 5 with 4GB RAM, Chrome OS was using half the available memory with only a system monitoring application open.

In summary, it's probably time for manufacturers to stop producing Chromebooks with 4GB RAM, at least on models that are shipping with reasonably-powerful processors. Due to countless factors, only some of which are in Google's control, 4GB is no longer enough for a satisfactory Chrome OS experience.

However, Chromebooks have seen little to no experimentation. But things are about to change, as recent code submissions suggest Google is working on a dual-screen Chromebook (via 9to5Google).

The device in question is codenamed ‘Palkia’ and the code submission on Chrome Gerrit clearly mentions a second touchscreen on the device. There is also the mention of a tablet mode, however, it is unclear if we are talking about a clamshell form factor with two inner display or a conventional foldable design with a touchscreen display on the outside as well as inside.
However, it is a sign that Google is not averse to the idea of such a device and is experimenting with the software side of things for such hardware.

ACT puts out call for 20K Chromebooks

Google just updated its support page for Chrome OS updates to list two new models, the HP Pro c645 Chromebook Enterprise and the Lenovo ThinkPad C13 Yoga Chromebook Enterprise. Google is rebranding the Search/Launcher key on their Chromebooks as the Everything Button as they transition more shortcut functionality to make use of the key.

According to Android Police, the Everything Button, which lives above the left Shift and below the Tab keys, replaces the Caps Lock button on a standard keyboard.
Currently, the Search or Launcher key would open up the Chrome OS launcher or initiate a search, depending on the context.

MediaTek unveils two new chipsets for Chromebooks

MediaTek is announcing a couple of new Chromebook chipsets today. The SoCs are called the MT8192 and MT8195, and they're built on 7nm and 6nm processes, respectively. Obviously, the latter is more premium and more efficient, but both of these are aimed at making powerful and light Chrome OS portable PCs.

The MT8192 has an octa-core CPU that has four big Cortex-A76 cores and four little Cortex-A55 cores. It has MediaTek's APU 2.0 for 2.4 TOPS AI performance, and it comes with a Mali-G57 GPU with support for 2133MHz LPDDR4x memory and UFS 2.1 storage. It supports FHD+ displays at up to 120Hz, and 4K HDR video decoding.

"Chromebooks are seeing an unprecedented surge in popularity as more people work remotely and take online classes. MediaTek already powers some of the most popular Chromebooks on the market, and will continue to improve and drive user experiences forward with our new chipsets," said Jerry Yu, Corporate Senior Vice President at MediaTek.
The MT8195 is also an octa-core SoC, but the four big cores are Cortex-A78. It has APU 3.0 with 4 TOPS, along with the same Mali-G57 GPU and 2133MHz LPDDR4x memory support.

A new report from Canalys found that Chromebooks have outperformed the rest of the industry product categories with a 75% annual growth and a shipment volume of 11.9 million units in Q2.

Vendors of Chromebook invested further into the product category after the Q2 success.
Brian Lynch, research analyst at Canalys, said the success of Chromebooks is proving to be remarkably resilient, noting that their growth streak has extended well beyond the height of the pandemic.

"Even as key markets like North America and Western Europe have seen schools begin to open up, shipments remain elevated as governments and education ecosystems plan for long-term integration of Chromebooks within digital learning processes," Lynch said.

MediaTek teases Kompanio 1200 for Chromebooks, but it’s still not ready

One thing it did was tease the MediaTek Kompanio 1200 chipset, which is aimed at high-end Chromebooks.

The Kompanio 1200 was first announced a year ago as the MT8195, and while the also announced MT8192 (now called the Kompanio 820) was coming in Q2, MT8195 was only said to be coming at a later date. While many expected that later date to be in 2021, that’s unfortunately not going to be the case. We’re now expecting it in 2022, which is a shame, because the chipset seems pretty interesting.

It’s a chipset built on a 6nm process using Cortex-A78 that’s aimed at the premium Chromebook segment, something that we’ve not seen from an ARM vendor before. Most ARM-powered Chromebooks are budget devices, with Intel still dominating the premium tier.
And when MediaTek says that this is aimed at the premium tier, it’s talking about Chromebooks that cost over $400.

In the meantime, we’re going to see the Kompanio 1200 launch in Chromebooks beginning in 2022. It’s possible that that could happen as early as CES, which takes place in January.

If your Chromebook supports mobile connectivity, you may be able to start using it as a hotspot. The upcoming change was spotted by 9to5Google in Chromium Gerrit, the web-based code review system Google’s developers use to work on future updates.

When the feature is available for testing, you will be able to activate it through chrome://flags. Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T already offer — a very limited — line of Chromebooks that you can purchase through them, giving you access to a mobile network right away. You can also add a Chromebook to an existing plan or add a SIM card, which Google describes how to do here.

Giving Chromebooks the capability is a smart move, considering the devices typically have a long battery life or are already being used while plugged in, meaning longer connectivity.

Chromebooks to get new video editing features in the next few months

Google has announced that it’ll be bringing new video editing features to Chromebooks in the near future. Features include video editing tools in the Google Photos app and improved pre-installed apps such as the Gallery app, Screencast app, and Cursive App.

With the new Google Photos movie editor, Chromebook owners will be able to select a theme and the people or pets they’d like to feature. Google Photos will then stitch together a movie using photos and videos while intelligently picking out the most meaningful moments from your long videos. If you want more control, you can create the movie from scratch by arranging the photos and clips in the order you’d like.

Newly updated pre-installed apps on Chromebooks include the Gallery app, Screencast app, and Cursive app. The firm said the Gallery app will get new PDF editing features, so you don’t have to print and scan signed forms. The Screencast app can be used to record, view, and share transcribed videos and presentations. Finally, the Cursive app lets you capture, edit, and organize handwritten notes with a stylus. Creations can be pasted into another app or sent as a PDF.

Chromebooks have carved out a niche in schools, offering a balance of simplicity, ease of replacement, and affordability. For its latest models, Acer has put special attention into the unique need for durability when it comes to school-owned equipment. For example, all four Chromebooks have reinforced hinges and corners, metal-plated ports, and spill-resistant keyboards.

A baseline, Celeron-powered model of the Acer Chromebook Vero 712 will retail for $429 and launch in April, while a model with the Intel Core i3 will cost $529.
