Just updated my Win10 v. 20H2 beta channel with KB4586781 to build 19042.630, so far no problems, fast, and no leftovers.

Same here. It was a trouble free update and it installed in a blink.

Why did I get Windows Update and OneDrive in the settings page on a clean install but not when I installed over the previous build? Is this the lottery?

Installed November updates from Windows Catalog today on 20H2 (SSU, .NET, and CU). Took the usual 10 min. on the SSD as opposed to 90 min. on the old HDD. No problems observed. WU then offered update for Flash Player (which I previously uninstalled, but it came back) and MSRT.

I've still got multiple computers stuck on build 1909, with Windows Update saying I'm up to date and no message saying that 2004 or 20H2 is coming in time. On one of the computers I installed the recovery ISO of Windows 10, which was a build from a few years ago. Windows Update updated that computer only to 1909.

I know I can manually upgrade, but I'm planning to wait to see if newer builds eventually become available in Windows Update.

^^ AFAIK: the "downlod and instal" link in WU means also that your specific machine is compatible with build 2004 or 20H2. If you dont see this link then your machine is stil incompatible with these builds and you are installing them on your own risk. Therefore you should not 'force' the installation.

Yes, that's true. However, I have done clean installs of 2004 on a number of old laptops with no issues. In my case, I'm just curious as to why I get no message saying that the update to build 2004 isn't yet ready for my devices.

Which is the worst scenario of the two? Defragging the SSD or TRIM of an HDD? I would think the former would be more potentially harmful. At least that one got fixed, no Microsoft "acknowledgement" needed.

    Never again. :cautious:

Second one is not harmful really since it can't be performed. TRIM is only attempted but it can't be run so an error is logged.

It's harmless to defrag SSDs and Windows 10 actually does defrag them.

Yes, I remember your saying this previously and it seems to be fairly common knowledge. It was the additional "feature" of defragging at every restart because of the "never run" aspect. It's annoying and baffling of Microsoft to foot-drag on this issue. It's been nearly a year since the disk bugs first surfaced.

What about wear & tear of the memory cells of the SSD if you fragment (a lot)?

It shouldn't matter if you defrag a lot. If little time has passed since you last defragged, then most likely the SSD will have very little fragmentation. As a result, due to not many files needing to be moved, there will not be much data written.

IMHO, it's desirable to be using any SSD tool. I have been using SSD Fresh for ages with all options enabled except indexing.
