To uninstall ESET use the uninstaller in safe mode of WIN. In the net you will find many descriptions.

Vielen Dank ;) / Many thanks, Radagast, for this explanation. They store the information on their servers which is connected to this cookie ID. Yes, this sounds very convincing.

Bellzemos, I think we have now the technical explanation. :)

Thanks for this information too. I will leave it to Bellzemos to test it, as personally it does not annoy me when Youtube remembers my behaviour within the sandbox. I was just curious why it happened.

Thanks, @Wabe6666, for your reply and your advice. Yes, Windows Defender is supposed to be very good now, and I have certainly considered doing without ESET. But the present installation problem seems to be the missing certificate clearly stated by David Xanatos at the top his GitHub download page
    https://github.com/sandboxie-plus/Sandboxie/releases
because ESET for years never gave any problems with the earlier versions.

I think the continuing problem is caused by my ignorance about how to configure ESET to ignore the Sandboxie components, and at this stage, I would prefer to have a solution to that. Failing a solution, I will just go back to trhe earlier version --- if I can.

Does ESET allow you to Exclude folders and files?
    Try >
    Exclude C:\Program Files\Sandboxie folder
    Exclude C:\Program Files\Sandboxie-Plus folder
    and
Exclude SandboxieInstall64-v5.43.6.exe installer file before running.
Exclude Sandboxie-Plus-x64-v0.4.2.exe installer file before running.
    and
backup > Sandboxie.ini ....before running installer....just in case.

All Chromium based browsers have issues with Sbie. My preferred browsers are Brave and Chromium and both will not browse the Internet. I'm wondering do U really need Sbie as a standard user? I understand if you're browsing as root or Admin but as a standard user, wouldn't your firewall and AV suffice?

I wouldn't feel safe without SB when I'm browsing. But then I've been a user for many years, and am used to the security comfort it gives me.

And I'm a Firefox user, so for the moment not affected.

Thanks for replying. Do you maybe know where is the YT cookie stored on the drive so I can try blocking it with SBIE the way you described?

It depends on the browser, where the cookies are stored. I personally use Mozilla Firefox (v82 at the moment), and here the cookies can be found like described below:
    1. In the URL row type in "about:support" (and Enter).
    2. In the appearing information window go to the line "Profile folder" (i hope this is the correct name, because i use the german version), and here click on the button "Open folder".
    3. Now your file manager is opening at this folder.
    4. In this folder, there are many files, and the file "cookies.sqlite" contains your cookies.
(Probably there are a few more files named "cookies.sqlite-shm" or "cookies.sqlite-wal" etc. Eventually they are also containing cookies, but here i'm not sure).
    5. So to block the access to the cookies, i assume you need to block the access to this file. For me, the complete path is as follows:
"C:\Users\Radagast70\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\trvg9zcq.default\cookies.sqlite" (this is my name of the folder, but yours will be different (parts in blue colour will differ)).
I have not tested the blocking of cookies, so i can not guarantee that it works. Probably the sandboxed Firefox will complain, when it can not access this file (because it is blocked), but i assume that Firefox then creates a cookie file inside of the sandbox, which have an other ID compared to the real cookie outside of Sandboxie (this can be checked by examining the sandboxed path of Sandboxie).

For Internet Explorer, which i don't use, Google told me that the path for Internet cache and cookies is "C:\Users\Radagast70\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\", but i have not checked this.

Firefox won't work if you block cookies in Sandbox settings. But you could try Write only file access instead. This settings hides the cookies already present in the computer but is allowed to write/save new ones. Firefox works this way but I think is doubtful handling the access of cookies this way will work out things for you.

Thanks @bjm_ for the reply, but no luck again, I'm afraid.

I added the folder C:\Program Files\Sandboxie (I'm not using Plus) to the second location:
ESET --> Setup --> Computer Protection --> Settings --> Edit Exlusions
I paused ESET, so I didn't add the installer as well.

Once again, installation went well, and then the browsers ran in Sandboxie. I rebooted, and started an ESET scan, and once again, ESET pounced. It declared, as David Xanatos had said it would, that a virus (Win32/Agent.ABZW.gen) was contained in the file sbiervs.sys, and it removed the file, crippling Sandboxie. Then it forced a reboot.

Interesting, because I had already successfully used adding a folder to prevent ESET pouncing ing on some of my downloaded NirSoft programs. They are standalone, of course, not installed.

I'll wait for the certificate version. All the best for your work, David.

Does your ESET have Performance exclusions and Detection exclusions?
Does your ESET have Exclude a file based on specified hash (SHA1), regardless of the file type, location, name or its extension.
Does *.* apply with your ESET?
    - If you want to exclude all files in a folder, type the path to the folder and use the mask *.*
Does \* apply with your ESET?
    - C:\ProgramFiles\ESET\*
    - C:\Tools\* – The path must ends with the backslash and asterisk to indicate that it is a folder and all its subfolders that are being excluded.
    - C:\Tools – Tools folder will not be excluded. From the scanner perspective, Tools can also be a file name.
    - C:\Tools\ – Do not forget to add the asterisk at the end of the path: C:\Tools\*

@bjm_ I think you've cracked it! Yes, ESET does have detection exclusions (which I was using) and performance inclusions (which I had ignored, but I have now read about). And yes, I had entered the path without trailing \* and with "..." quotes.

I have just added both paths C:\Program Files\Sandboxie and C:\Program Files\Sandboxie\* without quotes to performance exclusions and to detection exclusions --- probably overkill. Then I paused ESET, ran the installer, and all was well as before. But this time, after I rebooted and did a full scan with ESET, and there were no detections. So all seems clear now.

Thank you very much for your persistence, for solving the problem, and for teaching me a bit more about ESET (those are nice ESET URLs). And thank you also @Wabe666 and @stapp for your help. It's cruel being a non-techie and wanting to use a PC properly --- help is much appreciated.

    Hi!

I bought an old lifetime license for sandboxie. Lately, my latest copy of sandboxie is trying to renew itself and drive me crazy, since the license server apparently no longer works. Where do I get a copy of the latest main branch (not forked) of sandboxie, pre-compiled for Win 7 SP1 64 bit.

    Thanks.
    D.

@ Radagast & Bo - thank you both. I have somehow managed to get rid of the Cookies warning and am only left with the Singin nag now. I'll just keep it that way, if one day I'll have enough I'll try what you wrote up there. :)

Thank you for the link. I'm using AdBlock Plus with Firefox and have entered the 2 entries for Youtube to test this. It blocks a part of the Youtube login nag but the "keyhole" part is still being displayed in the middle of the screen:
    upload_2020-11-4_21-44-23.png

I have to tweak it somehow...

    Maybe, try uBlock Origin?
What's your Firefox Enhanced Tracking Protection setting?
Do you block 3rd party cookies?
    -
Maybe, I don't see YouTube nags because I'm always Sign'd In to Gmail.

You might want to try this filters. They are 4, the one to the left is the strongest and the one extreme right is the softest. Some get rid of more stuff than others. So, you have to test them.

@ bjm_ - No, I'm not annoyed enough to change the ad blocker. :) I'm not sure about the other stuff, I'd have to check. If you're singned into Gmail, then you are signed into Google and Youtube and everything else they own.

@ Bo - I've tried with the strongest one but it doesn't help in this case.

    Thank you both.
