When Sony announced the $400 entry price for its PlayStation 5 video game console Wednesday, it said preorders would start the next day. Many large retailers decided to start sales early, surprising fans who quickly surfed to websites only to learn the device had already sold out.

But not at eBay. The popular auction site was filled with listings for PlayStation 5 consoles ready to sell on Thursday promising the seller had secured a preorder and would ship the device immediately after it arrived.
Many sellers appear to be asking between $750 and $1,000, about double the $400 starting price of the console without a Blu-ray drive, or double the $500 starting price for the PS5 that has it.

"Our Trust teams are aware of this issue and we are taking the appropriate action," an eBay spokeswoman said.

The Verge: Walmart’s latest PS5 preorders were gone in about a minute

The PS5 pre-order situation has so far been a bit of a mess, and Walmart’s fresh batch of consoles at 6PM PT / 9PM ET on Thursday night did nothing to change that. They were gone in about a minute.

I was able to get a Digital Edition in my cart, but I didn’t pull the trigger because I already secured a preorder yesterday. My editor said the Digital Editions were showing as out of stock for him about 10 seconds later, though, so who knows if I would have actually been able to make the purchase. And shortly after, a few of us at The Verge were seeing that preorders were no longer available.

In the Japanese interview, Jim Ryan mentioned that the PlayStation 5 will have a 99% compatibility with all PlayStation 4 titles, after the development team had tested and checked all released games.

Writing on its official Twitter account, PlayStation said its preorders could have gone "a lot smoother" and that it would be releasing more of the systems for preorder in the next few days via retailers.

Rumor mill: Despite Sony's claims that PlayStation 5 production is on track and that fears of shortages are unfounded, we are already seeing evidence that this is not the case. The problem may be even more pronounced for those seeking the cheaper digital version.

Last week, retailers sold out of their pre-order allotments in less than 24 hours, with some believing they won't get any more before launch day. This week, Amazon notified customers with PS5 pre-orders that they might not even get their console on launch day.

An anonymous source seemed to confirm that the shortfalls are not isolated to the United States. An insider with GameStop Canada said that it got an allotment of 22,000 units and only 3,000 (13 percent) were PS5 Digital Editions.
Take this report with a grain of salt. It is by no means an official or scientific survey and only looked at the inventories of a handful of GameStop stores.

However, the consistency between the initial pre-order allocations seems to indicate that there are certainly fewer digital consoles than the standard available. This ratio could change over the next few days or more.

(At the time of writing, that’s tomorrow: September 25.) “These PS5s will not be for launch day but likely within one or two weeks after launch.” Furthermore, not every GameStop will have pre-order stock available.

This sounds like a similarly limited opportunity, especially since not every store is guaranteed to get additional stock. The only way to know for sure seems to be to visit your local shop sometime tomorrow.

It’s the first time we’ve seen the PS5 hardware outside of leaked images from Taiwan’s National Communications Commission. A variety of publications have now published detailed hands-on images and videos of the PS5 [...]

4gamer has published photos of the PS5 standing both vertically and horizontally, demonstrating how the stand works in either position to hold the console in place. Some photos also show how the PS5 will cool itself, and 4gamer notes that it wasn’t able to hear the fan inside the console or feel much heat exhausting from it during its limited time with the hardware.

AV watch also reports that the confirm button on the PS5 will be X instead of O going forward, which means Japanese players are going to have to retrain their body’s muscle memory to get used to that significant change. There’s little else to report on the controller just yet, but 4gamer does provide a good look at the different colorful LEDs on the DualSense.

These limited PS5 previews don’t answer all the questions we still have around the PS5, and we’re hoping Sony will start providing some answers soon.
There’s still more than a month to go until the PS5 launch on November 12th, so Sony has plenty of time to reveal a lot more about its next-gen console.

Sony is only leaving behind a total of ten games from the PS4 era. That's as many games as you have fingers.
The games that aren't backwards compatible are Shadow Complex Remastered, Hitman Go, Afro Samurai 2 Revenge Of Kuma Volume One, DWVR, TT Isle Of Man – Ride On The Edge 2, Just Deal With It!, Robinson: The Journey, We Sing, Shadwen, and Joe's Diner.

Surely there are some people out there that loved these games.
But, as you can see, it's less likely that people are going to be heartbroken about not being able to play these on the PS5 once it launches.

Like the digital option, you’ll be able to either download the new PS5 version (or pay to upgrade and then download, should the game require it).

There’s a big caveat here, though: while you’ll have to keep the new PS5 version of the game downloaded on your hard drive to play it, it’ll only work when the PS4 disc is still in your console.

Sony has been oddly shy about revealing the PlayStation 5’s user interface, but it’s finally ready to show what you’ll see in between games. The company has posted a first look at the PS5 experience that shows what’s ultimately an iteration on what you know from the PS4.

Games and apps in the Control Center and home screen will have Activities, such as game milestones and “opportunities,” displayed as cards. You’ll not only see your progress on levels and quests, but will sometimes have the option of (spoiler-free) guides and hints if you have a PlayStation Plus membership.
Messaging, screenshots and video are also faster, Sony said.

Yesterday, a Redditor revealed that the upcoming Xbox Series S has a measly 364GB of available storage space, which is somewhat shocking considering the size of video games these days. Now a Twitter user leaked storage specifications for the PlayStation 5, showing 648GB of usable drive space. For reference, the XBSS has a 512GB SSD, while the PS5's is 825GB.
While it is not surprising that some of each console's storage is eaten up by operating systems and potentially preinstalled apps like Apple TV and others, these low final numbers are disappointing for next-generation consoles.

That said, 648GB of alleged available storage is still higher than what came on the 500GB PS4 at launch, but not by much.
Sony has said that the SSD in the PS5 will be upgradable and that it also has an NVMe SSD expansion bay, but a typical third-party drive will lose the advantages of the PS5's super-fast storage architecture.

So take the news with a grain of salt and treat it as a rumor until we get to see the real thing when the PlayStation 5 launches on November 12.

Sony has confirmed to The Verge that the PS5 will not support storage expansion at launch. Instead, this support will be "reserved for a future update," according to the company.

The PS5 only comes with an 825GB internal SSD, a strange call considering the standard for storage has mostly become 1TB.
For reference, a good chunk of this is usually dedicated to running the OS, so realistically you have less than 825GB of usable storage.

That's unsustainable. Players should not be asked to continually delete and redownload games just because they run out of storage.

What just happened? Sony on Thursday said it wouldn’t be selling its upcoming PlayStation 5 in-person at retail stores on launch day due to Covid-19 concerns. Later in the day, Best Buy took it a step further by banning in-person next-gen console sales through the holiday season.

Best Buy put a positive spin on the news, noting that “there’s no need to camp out at your local store, just check back on BestBuy.com without leaving home!”
Indeed, that’s exactly what Sony, and now Best Buy, are attempting to avoid – long lines populated by gamers itching to get their hands on a new console as soon as possible.

A hot potato: Many consumers who were excited about buying a PS5, Xbox Series X/S, RTX 3000-series, and other tech products have been disappointed by their lack of availability this season. It's no secret that scalpers are behind a lot of these problems, but one UK group says it has "no regrets" facilitating the purchase of almost 3,500 PlayStation 5 consoles to resell at inflated prices.

The PS5's availability has suffered more than most gaming hardware released recently. Referring to its console, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan said that "everything is sold. Absolutely everything is sold." The company later promised more stock before the end of the year following "unprecedented" demand, but much of it could be snapped up by scalpers, again.

Right now, the only way to secure a PlayStation 5 is to buy one from eBay for a price that verges on the comical. The most expensive (on the US site) is $15,000, while the vast majority of those under that are at least $2,000.

With parents having to explain to disappointed children that they won't be getting a new console this year, do the scalpers and those that facilitate their actions feel guilty? CrepChiefNotify certainly doesn't. It writes (via Video Games Chronicle) [...]
