As the summer started this year, Microsoft continued to deliver its vision for making Microsoft Teams more extensible by 3rd party developers to enrich the collaboration service's experience. These extensions make Teams more customizable, contextual, and integrated with other digital tools, and therefore more efficient and convenient for the user.

Microsoft is very much on a roll with Teams, is rapidly improving it and adding features, and has generally seized on the global shift to remote work during the pandemic to gain momentum in the categories that Teams plays in.
The decision to make Teams a full platform in its own right might puzzle some industry watchers who have tracked the dubious history of turning collaboration tools into their own software platforms.

SEEING TEAMS AS AN OPERATING SYSTEM FOR WORK
Frankly, embedding 3rd party apps into collaboration tools is far from a new vision.
But it has actually been delivered on perhaps most successfully by Teams uber-competitor, Slack, who has well over one thousand such integrations today that are probably the most widely used of any collaboration platform currently.

Microsoft understands the platform game extremely well.
Microsoft wins when it can connect its developer audience with its user audience. The latter can make the collaboration tool they use in Teams far richer and more powerful than they ever imagined at first.

In one sense, it's clear the calculus is that Teams is a clear winner in the industry. It's far superior to Skype for Business that it replaces.
It's going to be an overwhelming presence in the market for the foreseeable future, not the least because it's an integral part of Office365.

Microsoft announced in July that a new virtual Breakout Rooms feature would come to Microsoft Teams in the final quarter of 2020. It appears that the meeting hosts will soon have an option to create breakout rooms during Teams meetings. Spotted by Tim Evans, a Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert, the feature has begun rolling out for users running Teams’ preview releases.

The Breakout rooms feature is a powerful tool in Microsoft Teams that allows meeting organizers to split a group video or audio call into divergent sessions for smaller group discussions. They can assign users to a room, add/remove/rename the rooms.

The feature is currently listed as under development in the Microsoft 365 roadmap, which indicates that it will be released in October 2020. Considering that the breakout room functionality is now being rolled out to preview users, it shouldn’t be long before it makes its way to the public in the coming weeks.

Around two months ago Slack file an antitrust complaint with the European Commission against Microsoft for bundling Microsoft Teams with Office 365, and today the company revealed that they are concerned about retaliation by Microsoft due to this.

The concern was revealed in their latest 10-Q filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and notes:

“Furthermore, we could be subject to retaliatory or other adverse measures by Microsoft, its employees, or agents in response to the complaint that we filed with the European Commission.”
Unlike Apple, Microsoft does not have the power of using its platform to ban Slack, but Slack is concerned about a more subtle hostility.

Microsoft Teams users can now collaborate and receive updates on GitHub projects via new integration between the two platforms, which has entered public beta.

The update connects Microsoft's video-conferencing and collaboration software to the popular code-hosting platform, allowing Teams users to subscribe to notifications from development repositories they care about.
The public beta began rolling out on Thursday, September 10.

Writing on the GitHub blog, Ashok Kirla, a program manager at Microsoft, said: "Developers use GitHub together with a number of other platforms, to communicate with each other on issues, pull requests, deployment statuses, and other updates.

GitHub already provides integration with Slack via the GitHub for Slack app, allowing users to receive link previews in Slack for public repositories, set up notifications with slash (/) commands, and keep up-to-date with project activity.
Teams integration with GitHub will work much in the same way.

Microsoft Teams is getting several updates as part of the company’s virtual Ignite tech conference this morning, looking to keep pace with its rivals and keep up with the demands of users increasingly relying on the collaboration technology as critical infrastructure for remote work and learning.
The ability to create ad hoc breakout rooms will be available starting next month. Microsoft says this is one of the most requested Teams features.

Native Teams app for Windows on ARM devices now available

A native ARM64 client for the collaboration app will still perform better than say a 64-bit client running via app emulation. The performance and efficiency improvements will also be a welcome addition for those that rely heavily on Teams for remote collaboration during the pandemic.

Microsoft continues to rapidly expand its Teams collaboration software user base. Teams now has 115 million daily active users, up more than 50% from April (75 million users), and more than 160% from March (44 million users).

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed the latest statistic during the company’s fiscal first quarter earnings call. The growth of Teams illustrates how more companies are using collaboration apps with the shift to remote work amid the pandemic. Others including Zoom, Slack, Google, and more offer competing products in the booming market for collaboration technology.
The Teams growth also explains one of the reasons why Microsoft’s revenue and profits climbed in the September quarter.

“We are seeing increased usage intensity as people communicate, collaborate and co-author content across work, life, and learning,” Nadella said on the call.

Last month, Microsoft introduced several new capabilities in Microsoft Teams. Breakout Rooms was the major feature that was added last month.
Breakout rooms allow organizers to divide the meeting into sub-groups to facilitate discussions and brainstorming sessions. Also, meeting attendees can now use voice assistance powered by Cortana to join and end their meetings without touch.

Unsurprisingly, Microsoft has been releasing a steady stream of improvements to Teams, the company’s de-factor Slack competitor. As noticed by The Verge, the company gave a quick preview of a feature called “Dynamic View” that should make video calls with presentations a lot easier to view.

Currently, every participant shows up in a small sidebar, which makes it harder to see the people who are actually leading a presentation. Dynamic view will automatically optimize content, but viewers can customize it as well. Microsoft is also making it easier to see when a participant “raises their hand” in a video chat as well as who is currently speaking.

Microsoft officials said that the company's Team group-collaboration platform now has 145 million daily users, which is up from 115 million daily users -- Microsoft's Teams tally which it issued in October 2020. Microsoft officials shared the new number on April 27, the day it released its Q3 FY'21 earnings.

Microsoft Corporate Vice President Jeff Teper tweeted the new Teams number today. The 145 million number was as of the end of March 2021, which was the end of the fiscal third quarter.

Microsoft announced in February that it was adding more integrations between Teams and Dynamics 365 -- as well as others of its services. Today, Microsoft announced that Dynamics 365 revenue growth was up 45 percent over the previous year's quarter.

This month, Microsoft delivered several new features for Microsoft Teams users. Breakout room retention and participant reassignment, improved Polls support, custom Backgrounds on iOS for Teams meetings and Teams casting from Android and iOS mobile apps are some of the new features. BTW, I normally never use tools like Zoom and MS Teams but recently I used Google Meet and it was pretty good. It all worked via the browser, so no need to install any app.
