Opera --> New Stable Version Released!

Mainly the look, but also now I got used to Opera's bookmarks system, and in Opera to open closed pages it's more easy... little things actually.

 

Opera has a browser snapshot feature now, very useful. I also prefer the UI layout--it's clean and well-organized, and simple enough to commit to memory so you get used to it very quickly. The bookmarks are simple and effortless to use.

I liked Vivaldi very much, but its configuration settings were a little overpowering for me. Opera's settings are better suited for me. MS Edge is secondary on here--the homepage is so cluttered, even if you futz around with the quick launch button. Hopefully, when it gets its sidebar feature like Opera's, it'll be easier on the eye.

I really appreciate your suggestion about the sidebar add-on. I'm hesitating, though, due to the messages on the page you linked in your post. So, I'll have to think it over. No add-on should have any caveats in my mind.

Opera still has it made as far as the sidebar goes. The homepage interface is almost all my chosen wallpaper. No clutter.

OK I see, I actually like the bookmarking system in Vivaldi better. I agree that Vivaldi has way too many options at the moment, it should be toned down a bit. However it's still easier to find most important features, I don't like the "standard" look of the Opera settings page. And can you tell me a bit more about the browser snapshot feature?

 

Right here. I've already used it a few times-- the image can be edited like it was from Snipping Tool and it doesn't get lost in your image collection because OPERA is in the description. Very convenient.

OK thanks, didn't know it was related to screenshots. I thought it was some kind of feature related to saving a browsing session. BTW, Vivaldi doesn't seem to have a crash recovery feature, so if it crashes it doesn't restore the tabs, like Firefox used to do, very weird. I don't know if this is offered by any of the other Chromium based browsers. Luckily Vivaldi almost never crashes.

 

Oh right, "snapshot" can mean one of two things. Yeah, here it was a snip-like feature not a snapshot like a restore. Yes, I used Vivaldi for quite a while myself, it never crashed while Opera's done so twice now--why I don't know. Vivaldi was admittedly more stable but has just too many settings for me. I'm not patient with these things.

It seems Vivaldi can revert to a prior session from five minutes back if it does crash. I only post this b/c I found it hard to believe Vivaldi doesn't have anything related to a recovery in case of a crash.

The Opera snapshot works fine. But I have used with Faststone Capture since many years, and I love it !

 

Well, Vivaldi 3.4 combined with Sandboxie isn't a good match, because it has crashed on me twice this week, so I will probably downgrade to Vivaldi 3.2. And the link that you posted about "session restore" seems to be a workaround, it should be a standard feature though. Another workaround is to configure Vivaldi to always startup with the last session, can't believe I didn't think of this sooner.

But anyway, I've done a test, I killed Firefox, Opera and Edge via Process Explorer and to my surprise only Edge offered to restore all tabs! I believe on old Firefox versions it only worked when you installed the Tab Mix Plus extension. But seems like Opera also doesn't restore sessions after crash, is this correct?

 

OK, decent question. I had to look that up out of curiosity. It seems from various forum posts that Opera SHOULD automatically restore the entire session when it restarts after a crash--if you have the "retain tabs from previous session" toggled to ON under the "On Startup" section. Sort of like Vivaldi. I really wish Edge would get its Sidebar already; that feature is miraculous.

Aside from the Settings, It seems there is at least one extension you can get from the Opera add-ons store that works from the sidebar to restore any sessions. No thanks, though, I'm kind of leery about extensions in general ever since the Nano Adblocker disclosure. Keeping it minimal.

Is there a way to stop opera from adding advertised speed dials. I hate that it is behaving almsot like an adware.

 

OK I see, but just like in Vivaldi, that's not really a "crash recovery" feature. A browser should be smart enough to notice that it's being closed in an abnormal way, and only then it should offer to restore open tabs, this is exactly what Edge does. Very weird that Vivaldi and Opera haven't added this feature.
