Thank you stapp and Osaban. I'll have to experiment of course with my system and needs, but it's always useful to see how other people use this software. For example, although I read about the right-click menu, I didn't remember to try it!

Thank you for the links. Interesting reading. I suppose that I should be very careful with what I do while in shadow mode and ensure that any critical data will be properly saved before i reboot.

    no problem, izzy.
for my money, you can use @bjm_ 's post as a guideline and you'll be fine.

Yes indeed, at first you might inadvertently reboot and the moment the process starts, any change will be deleted there is no going back. it is however a matter of habit I've been using SD for years now and it never occurred to me to lose anything being in shadow mode...

I'm getting more familiar with SD, but the following questions come up:

One is why do I sometimes see that service.exe is trying to access one of my external drives? This happened twice with a specific drive, but not the other external drives which were also connected to my PC at the time. It also happened once with another external drive. I have Windows Folder Control enabled and these attempts by service.exe were automatically blocked. None of these drives are included in shadow mode. I usually keep them disconnected and only reload them as needed.

A second question has to do with a popup from SD that "Z: is in a low free space". My Z drive is for my external DVD/CD writer which actually is not connected to my PC. The popup message usually appears when I open SD.

I cannot answer your first question except perhaps you should exclude service.exe with Windows Folder Control. Your second question in the SD GUI/Administration you should uncheck ' Notify me with low free space on the protected volume'. There are many warnings windows that can appear while entering shadow mode, but in my experience they are just warnings with no real consequences in the functioning of SD. If your system enters shadow mode, you ought to check whether files and folders committed with the context menu survive a reboot and conversely files created in shadow mode, not committed, should disappear with a reboot...

SD can virtualise all external drives that can be recognised and then listed in "Mode settings" panel. It seems that in your case those two "specific" drives aren't covered by WFC protection and by this way are not blocked so SD is trying to access them to give you possibility to protect them.

Thank you for the suggestion. It sounds very likely, but in fact both those drives are protected by Windows Controlled Folders.

When I enter shadow mode I get this message:
I usually press OK and enter shadow mode because I don't know which are the files concerned. Is there a way to know which are the files in use?

You wrote "specific" so we can guess that they are differ in some way from another more typical. But we don't know what "specific" means :)

That are usualy files used by processes working parallely with SD and in my opinion that could be processes of AV, internet browser, office packet, and perhaps every that are using some file/folders to saving/modyfing data in real time.

By "specific" I meant that it's the same two out of four external drives that I have connected. They are all USB disks connected through the same USB hub.

For the second matter I'll try having Shadow Defender entering shadow mode on reboot and I'll see if there's any difference.

I also get the message sometimes (without having any specific files in use) and I have learned to ignore it. You need not worry about this message for the following reason:

A long time ago a user in Patrick's former Shadow Defender Forum (shadowdefenderforum.com) quoted an information he got by Tony (the developer of SD) himself. The Forum is no longer online but I made a note of what Tony had written:

From this time I no longer worry about this message. ;)

@Peter 123 excellent thank you, @co22 what I installed I uninstalled for troubleshooting, its not that, two programs/scripts I can confirm seam to trigger this : MBR filter and thago fences, the more programs I install the bigger the chances SD gets stuck in "file in use" error

    Shadow Defender's site https://www.shadowdefender.com has a self-signed certificate.

    Is this a man-in-the-middle attack?

How do we know we're getting the real executable by the vendor?

Trying to update my licensed copy of Shadow Defender 1.4.0.608 just in case the latest version includes fixes for any security issues.

Is SD 1.4.0.608 compatible with Windows 20H2?

Any know issue with SD 1.5.0.726 under Windows 20H2?

Why are you so paranoid about SD 1.5.0.726?

    :ninja::ninja:

    Thanks

I've had .726 on 20H2 for several weeks now in the insider program, and it works perfectly (at least on my machine :D)

Can someone please provide me the SHA256 checksum of SD 1.4.0.608 and SD 1.5.0.726?

Does SD 1.4.0.608 works on Win 20H2?
