Imagine parking in a garage — but instead of navigating tight turns, maneuvering into narrow spaces and driving seemingly endless loops to find an available spot, you simply get out of your car, hit a button on an app, and off your vehicle goes to park itself.

That is the future that will one day be possible thanks to self-driving technology that players in the automotive industry are rushing to bring to market. A glimpse of that future will be on display for the next month at the garage of The Assembly, a mixed-use development in Corktown.
There, Ford Motor Co., automotive supplier Bosch and real-estate developer Bedrock will showcase "automated valet parking," in which connected Ford Escape test vehicles will use Bosch infrastructure to demonstrate the ability of vehicles to park themselves — with no assistance from a driver.

Autonomous driving startup Pony.ai and German megasupplier Bosch's Automotive Aftermarket division in North America are teaming up to develop and test a maintenance and repair system for future AV fleets.

The partnership, announced Wednesday, capitalizes on Bosch's Car Service network, which provides automotive repair and maintenance through independent operators. The network has more than 20,000 locations across the world, more than 1,000 of which are in North America.
As vehicles become more automated, fixed operations require service technicians with expertise in self-driving technology.

"As a fleet operator, Pony.ai needs partners that not only provide quality and service excellence but also the drive to adapt to our needs as we scale our fleet operations."

Police in North Carolina have filed charges against a driver whose Tesla crashed into a police car early Wednesday morning, Raleigh's CBS 17 television reports. The driver admitted to officers that he had activated the Autopilot technology on his Model S and was watching a movie on his phone at the time of the crash.

"A Nash County deputy and a trooper with the Highway Patrol were on the side of the road while responding to a previous crash when the Tesla slammed into the deputy’s cruiser," CBS 17 reports. "The impact sent the deputy’s cruiser into the trooper’s vehicle—which pushed the trooper and deputy to the ground."
Thankfully, no one was seriously injured by the crash.

It's an important reminder that no car on the market today is fully self-driving. Drivers need to pay attention to the road at all times, regardless of what kind of car they have or what kind of driver-assistance technology their car has.

To be fair, this isn't just a Tesla problem. Studies have found that driver-assistance systems like Autopilot—from Tesla and other automakers—are not good at stopping for stationary vehicles. A study earlier this month found that driver assistance systems from BMW, Kia, and Subaru failed to consistently stop for stationary vehicles on a test track.

Tesla has started pushing a new version of its software update to now visually detect speed limit signs, and more.
The automaker writes in the new 2020.36 release notes:

“Speed Assist now leverages your car’s cameras to detect speed limit signs to improve the accuracy of speed limit data on local roads. Detected speed limit signs will be displayed in the driving visualization and used to set the associated Speed Limit Warning.”
As usual, you can adjust Speed Assist settings by tapping Controls > Autopilot > Speed Limit.

Tesla has also built on its Traffic Light and Stop Sign Control feature to add a new ‘Green Traffic Light Chime’: [...]
The update is starting to be pushed to the fleet today. As usual, keep in mind that Tesla gradually pushes software updates to the fleet and it can take a few weeks before it reaches every car.

Aeva Inc, a Silicon Valley start-up working on a crucial sensor for self-driving vehicles, and German automotive industry supplier ZF Friedrichshafen AG said on Tuesday they were partnering to put the sensors into production.

Lidar sensors, which measure distances with a laser light, help autonomous cars get a three-dimensional picture of the road ahead. Dozens of companies have been working to reduce the sensors' cost to enable mass production.
Under the partnership, Aeva will be responsible for core sensing functionality, performance and algorithms. ZF, one of Europe's largest tier-one automotive suppliers, will produce an "automotive grade" sensor that meets carmaker's requirements.

"As we've come down from autonomous overall hype, and we're actually getting down to business, there's a clear focus on creating products that are going to be commercially viable in the short term," he said.

With shelter-in-place orders in effect, Waymo’s testing program retreated behind the walls of a closed-course facility called Castle.

Castle is a 113-acre self-driving car testing facility built on the former Castle Air Force Base in Atwater, California, about two hours southeast of San Francisco. Since 2013, Waymo has been using the site to run prototype cars through the toughest scenarios engineers could come up with.
The facility replicates real-world conditions, from city streets to railroad crossings and roundabouts. This controlled environment allows engineers to test specific scenarios without having to wait for a car to encounter them on public roads.

Testing a prototype autonomous vehicle as a complete system is necessary because the individual components are constantly changing. Software gets updated, the suite of sensors is changed as better equipment becomes available, and everything has to work on multiple vehicles.

Tesla is facing new claims of cars accelerating by themselves after several accidents in China — especially a recent one that resulted in two deaths and several people injured.

As we stated at the time, several claims of sudden unintended acceleration involving Tesla vehicles have been made public over the years. The most publicized one involved a South Korean celebrity claiming his Model X accelerated on its own into his garage.
However, in every case, including that one, Tesla claimed that the car’s log showed that it was a user mistake due to pedal misapplication, meaning that the driver pressed on the accelerator instead of the brakes.

In one case, Electrek was able to have Tesla’s log verified by a third party, and it supported the automaker’s claims that it showed the driver pressed on the accelerator.

Now Tesla is facing a similar problem in China after a Model 3 ran into a crowd in Nanchong last week resulting in two deaths and six people injured.
Since the accident, several other reports of unintended acceleration involving Tesla vehicles have emerged in China.

She pleaded not guilty during a hearing on Tuesday. Her attorney did not immediately respond to an inquiry from The Associated Press.

Police in Alberta, Canada, received a call about a 2019 Tesla Model S speeding on a motorway near the town of Ponoka.

Officers said the car appeared to be in self-drive mode, with both front seats fully reclined and both the driver and passenger sleeping.
It had been travelling at 140km/h, but sped up to 150km/h when police turned on their emergency lights.

"Although manufacturers of new vehicles have built-in safeguards to prevent drivers from taking advantage of the new safety systems in vehicles, those systems are just that -supplemental safety systems," RCMP traffic services Superintendent Gary Graham said in a statement.
