OK, I've just given it a try. I chose to generate a password for Outlook desktop. It came up as Outlook Android for some reason. Anyway, I plugged it into my Outlook 2003 settings and it tested OK. I've sent and received emails using it without a problem. What causes the password to expire?

I don't believe that password will expire.
I have generated app passwords in the past for some image backup softwares to send completion emails, and not had to regenerate them since.

So all it seems to achieve is to get you to change your password from whatever you originally chose to a bunch of random numbers generated by Yahoo. It won't hurt anything I guess.

Any guide to change an existing account in Thunderbird to the new authentication method without deleting it and adding as a new one?
(And not using the separate 3rd party app passwords)

EDIT: Oh well that was easy. Just go to account settings, server settings and change authentication method from Normal Password to OAuth2. (Don't forget to do it for both incoming and outgoing server). Then when fetching new email, Thunderbird will automatically open a window where you can login and grant Thunderbird access.

Thanks for testing, this is exactly want I meant. On my account it doesn't always work. For example, if you compose a message and send it to yourself with these links, are they displayed as hyperlinks?

It didn't work for me first time. Turns out you have to send mail to receive it :)
Worked fine. I sent it to two of mail addresses via Basic Mail. Links pasted fine and both received. No issues. 2020-09-03_214643-test2-2ndTrial.jpg

The patch has been applied and it works.
MailNews is the first email client running on Windows XP with full Yahoo + OAuth2 support:

POP Peeper v.5 now allows easy OAuth2 management also of Gmail with a form that opens the default browser.
In my case, Gmail OAuth2 authentication with version 4.5.3 was impossible.
Too bad there is no a thread that allows users of W. to see the updates of this email notifier software.

In Windows 10-1909 and last 32 bit SeaMonkey 2.49.5 OAuth2 failed with this message:
    32bit-SeaMonkey-OAuth2-Fail.jpg

In 64 bit SeaMonkey 2.53.3 OAuth2 works fine. During the setup my firewall reported three outbound packets to thunderbird dot net. Probably to get the key just once since I see no more such connections for about 5 or 6 days now.

OT: when I switched to 64 bit SeaMonkey on Windows 7, default profile size remained the same.
But on Windows 10, now with thunderbird in the picture default profile size is about half of what it used to be. Yet the mail counts are the same, and spotcheck of contents, old and new, shows no damage. I wonder if it's a thunderbird feature to shrink things. If so, I like it.

BTW, is it true that Yahoo Mail can now be secured with a hardware security key? Sorry for the off topic.

October 20 is near, enter OAuth2 authentication also in your smartphone app.
In the smartphone it is probably more convenient to delete the account and then re-enter it by choosing Yahoo.

    This is weirder than fiction.
Even though on Windows 7 I got secure mail key and used it many times, I got the same message that I quoted in post 1.

Similar situation here, I use Windows Live Mail on Win 7 on Desktop. I don't use Android devices or apps so this is double dutch to me. I have my Gmail forwarded to my Yahoo account and all emails from both accounts are sent to my WLM email client on my desktop. I rarely use the Yahoo/Gmail webmail page/s apart from doing the occasional clear out maintenance. If anybody can offer any advice or info for a Fix I would be delighted (Yahoo is my primary email setup) cheers

With Gmail it easy to verify third-party apps with account access:

    100.jpg

In the image above I have 3 apps with access:

    1) The default email client of my smartphone
    2) Mail News (which is recognized as Thunderbird)
    3) Pop Peeper

With Yahoo it is more difficult to find what is shown in the image above.
And although I followed the same procedure I did with Gmail for the 3 devices, it seems that the usual smartphone email client app does not have access to the Yahoo account.
So I am waiting for October 20th and in my case only the app (client email) of my smartphone will have to be linked again to my Yahoo account *****.

You must check this, if you want an answer.:thumb:;):)

P.S. ***** = If this will be possible because I would like to know for sure, even if I have some hypotheses, the reason for not accessing.

I have found with certainty that Huawei Mail is not correctly accessing the Yahoo account with OAuth2 authentication.
I replaced the Huawei Mail app with the Gmail app.
I won't have any problems even after October 20th:

BTW, to answer my own question, it's now indeed possible to use a USB key to login into Yahoo Mail. But it's not clear yet if YubiKey is supported. But I suppose this doesn't work for third party tools, but only for webmail.

I updated my Thunderbird settings to use OAuth2 for a while now, but I still got an email reminder that my account security is out of date.

    Email received today:

If the content is not that, you need to change the account in some apps.

Yeah that was the email I got. I only use Thunderbird, so no other apps/programs to change.

I keep getting these reminders, just had another one in fact. Are you saying that I don't need to change anything else and I'm all set?

It is good to check if the apps connected to your account are all those that you have authorized.

Well, it's well past October 20 and yahoo mail comes in via SeaMonkey both in Windows7 (using some funny key) and in Windows10 using OAUTH2.
