Since we are talking about Win 10 2004 upgrade borks, I will also note this one that happened to me after the upgrade. It was also another Win 10 first for me.

My desktop taskbar Search bar was borked. Beside doing the "disappearing act" when it started up, it proceeded to download megabytes of data on a never ending basis until it was terminated. And I mean hundred of megabytes of data here. It was flat out scary. Tried all the web solutions to no avail. Finally, the MS solution PowerShell script finally got it working somewhat acceptable but it doesn't still have all the functionality it did on my clean installed Win 10 1909 version:

Home version here and no bootleg Group Policy enabler any more so I tried the registry procedure and it works, it just blurs when you're going to enter in your login password. It's also still blurred during the boot process but it passes very quickly. Very nice, thanks for the tip. :)

Probably, the setting will go out the window, esp. after a big update but I'll enjoy it while it lasts.

I have this same bug after the last week's CU KB4566782. All of my settings are OS in-built, no privacy apps or GPO.

Well my 20H2 just got cumulative KB4571756. It was hanging a bit on 100% installed but eventually moved along (phew!). Reading the changelog, it seems rather important in that several vulnerabilities are addressed. This time, the link in the update history can actually transport you to the correct Microsoft update page. :thumb:

Also got a Malicious Software Removal Tool, which is always welcome.

Complete d/l and install took under 3 min. even though it hung for a bit. Disk Optimization still working well on here. Winver for Insiders 20H2 is 19042.508. For 2004: 19041.508.

Edit: I found I can also run the MSRT by entering "mrt" in search and running as Administrator. Hmm, looks like a Defender scan. Anyone know anything more about this?

I just installed the same updates. Whether it stops at 100% for a bit depends on the speed of your machine. One did and a much faster one finished without the wait. I don't think there is anything different than usual for the MSRT but I could be wrong as I don't pay it much attention. In all of its years it has never found anything. Probably because there is nothing to find which is good.

OK, yes. I only mentioned it b/c I have an i9 processor, lol. Oh well. :)

Yes, regarding the MSRT, me too, it never seems to come up with anything but today was the day I thought I would hunt around for the "official results." I mean, generally, it supposedly runs after a restart but you never hear from it again.

So I searched for how to find it and found myself reading a page from the year 2005. It said to enter in search results: mrt.log, but if you open Start menu and just type in "mrt," you will get the opportunity to run it, plus actually see the results for a change. :)

mrt.exe lives in C\Windows\ System32 and can be run anytime from there.

i9 processors are nice. I have one as well. It's more of a disk thing from the results I am getting. Dual M2.SSD drives in RAID 0 tend to outpace most systems. I certainly wasn't looking to insult your machine. Both of the ones here I updated are pretty fast. As I update the slower ones I have to walk away and let them do their thing. The boss probably doesn't feel it useful to sit and look at it for a half hour. :argh:

I installed updates for Windows 10 2004 and Office 2019 with no noticeable problems. Windows Update again got Cleaning up phase at the end.

Problem with Defrager seem resolved on my end so I reenabled it's schedule.

This one might be bad news for some.

Got to 30% when updating on mine and system rebooted. It hung at loading operating system with the underscore flashing.

Watched that for a while pondering my-oh-my what to do now.:isay: Got fed up and did a Ctrl-Alt-Del key bit.:doubt: System rebooted on its own. Whew .... Updating started back up, completed, and successfully loaded the desktop. Updates show all successfully installed. :)

Now I did install the preview updates on the 4th. This might be related to today's BORK behavior.

Nope. I updated 3 PCs that had that same update and no issues. It may have just been a random incident.

Oh my, that sounds pretty high end--Windows updates specifically must be a breeze with something like this. Even on a smaller-end system like mine, an i9 transforms the desktop, it's awesome. The down-side is: I refuse to back-pedal, I'm spoiled.

This never fails to scare me, when it hangs. But to have to risk CTL/ALT/DEL--I mean, I don't recall ever having to resort to that. Good thing your system came back and updates went thru.

This machine had two restarts and showed a black screen for a few seconds but everything installed correctly and machine booted fine.

No problem at all with my laptop.

Never let anyone make you back-pedal. i9s are awesome. :thumb: That said my i7 is faster overclocked to 4.6 Ghz. o_O

As for these updates, never fear them. As long as you made a disk image first. Which I do. Daily. :D

By the way MSRT is now released through Win Updates on a quarterly basis instead of monthly.
You can always check if it has run by going to..
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\RemovalTools\MRT

Look at the GUID version number in right hand pane. Each one corresponds to a particular MSRT

Checked and confirm that bug fixed since .488 for SSD, remain for non-SSD drives.
