An update can break compatibility. Perhaps now, even going back to 5.33.1 wouldn't bring compatibility back to how it was when you were using 5.33.1.

Make sure you try running Outlook in a new sandbox with default settings. Perhaps only allowing the EMail exclusion for Outlook.

While credit to Sophos for making Sbie publicly available, they didn't seem to care a whit about "face" or public opinion with all their evasions (I'm being kind) prior to doing so.

Bo -- Where is the active Sandboxie configuration file stored under the Sophos versions? I'm planning to revert to 5.33.1 to test your hypothesis, but I want to be able to revert to my original configuration from backup in case I need to? -- jclarkw

BTW, just a general comment, but is it true that there are no portable versions of Edge, Chrome and Vivaldi? I have noticed that portable versions always work correctly inside the sandbox. I have installed portable versions of Brave, Opera and Firefox inside the sandbox and they all run just fine.

Where did you hear that from? Other than Edge, these first Google results are nothing new:
    https://portableapps.com/apps/internet/google_chrome_portable
    https://help.vivaldi.com/article/standalone-version-of-vivaldi/

As for inside the sandbox, I actually tend not to for portable versions of reputable programs.

Sidenote: My use case has been detailed and mostly unchanged from years ago...

Sandboxie is an application sandbox (a program's sandbox). So, all you need to do for that is to Force the programs that are set as default to open "all formats of files(mp4, pdf, exe, mkv etc)".

If you use, example, two video players to open all type of video files, then all you need to do is to set both of those programs as forced programs. After doing that, whenever you click a video file, the video will run sandboxed in the sandbox you have set for the video program to run. Is done automatically.

I think most of us agree regarding believing that Sophos didn't care about Sandboxie. But by releasing the code as Open source and helping set Tom up they are (in my view) kind of helping themselves save face, and keeps flak from being directed at them.

The Sandboxie ini file is in C>Windows. You can copy and save it but for doing what you want, I think is best not to revert to the original configuration.

Bo -- I can't really blame Sophos (or Invincia?) for no longer wanting to host the user manual, but is there any other source? I'm not getting anywhere with a Web search. Since I replaced Sandboxie 5.33.1 (which I think had help files built in), I have no access to reference materials... -- jclarkw

OK, my mistake, so Chrome is available as portable version, but I don't see any Vivaldi and Edge portable versions. Hopefully, portableapps.com will add them. Actually, when I download the Chrome portable version it shows up as a 1MB file, now that surely can't be right?

Thanks friend, let's hope Tom doesn't have any serious personal problems. We'll just have to be patient until the wheel can finally be put in motion. Thank you for all the support you give us.

The PortableApps version of Chrome downloads the installer and pretty much extracts it (profile and all) in a directory you specify.

The second link I posted should be official Vivaldi instructions to install it as a portable program.

As for Edge, I don't think there's any incentive for Microsoft to create an official one (especially since they're pushing it to Windows 7-10 via WU). There may be some unofficial ones, but YMMV.

The linked standalone version can create a portable Vivaldi.

opera is the only real portable chromium build. any other will lose extensions, passwords and some more when changing hosting OS. for security.

Hello. I'm new here. Perhaps a silly question - and forgive me if it has been answered somewhere else.

But according to my level of information there are currently 2 routs of sandboxie-successors. Unfortunately with Sbie-plus I've run into problems recently. So I had to revert to v5.33.3. But there is still this "classic" channel of advancement by Tom Brown. However on his Github page I couldn't find any up-to-date installers. So here is my question:

Are there any ready-made 64bit-Windows-installers for the latest "classic" version of Sandboxie? If so, where? Somehow I don't feel like messing around with MS-Visual-Studio and generating those "builds" myself.

Thanks, but Sophos said that 5.33.6 would only differ from 5.33.3 by some removed licensing stuff, so nothing new or advanced there.

I was talking about post-Sophos advancements in a new version by developer Tom Brown, v5.40 onward I believe?

Forcing programs will give you exactly what you want. It makes sandboxing automatic

The first thing you should do is separate programs in their own sandbox. So, you should create a dedicated sandbox for VLC. And if you also use WMP (example), you create one for WMP.

    Sandboxie Control>Sandbox>Create new sandbox

In the dialogue, don't copy settings from existing sandboxes. You can name sandboxes as you wish. So, for VLC, you can name it VLC.

To start, I would only change 2 settings from default. One, set the sandbox to delete on closing. And two, if the program doesn't need internet access, I would block all programs from having accees to the net. For your video sandboxes, I know some players require internet so how you set this up depends on your personal case use. In my case, my video players and nothing that runs in my video sandboxes is allowed access to the internet.

To Force a program, all you need to do is set the program's exe as Forced. Look at picture below, it shows the path you should go to for doing it.

    Go here:

Sandboxie control>Sandbox>Video sandbox>Sandbox settings>Program start>Forced programs, Click Add program, navigate to program's exe in Program files folder, and select it. You could also select the exe from the screen to the left, after you click Add program, if the program was recently run sandboxed.

    forced.jpg

This is Internet setting, after clicking Block all programs, this is what you ll get.

    internet.jpg

Forcing programs works well and easy. I could tell you a lot more but really, is not needed. Keep it simple.

It worked like a charm. Thanks.

I would like to ask a question.

Lets say you have infected mp4 file inside a folder. When you open the folder, it displays thumbnail of the video. Does that thumbnail means that video is already executed ?

I mean how can it know its thumbnail without even opening the video file, so it must have opened it in background to get thumbnail ? Can u get malware this way ?

    Check this screenshot
