You can also use DS from a Windows Boot Disk (7, 8 or 10)

Only for a partition. Not a complete disk restore.

Right, because DS is a partition-imaging app, not a drive-imaging app. As i'm sure you know, DS images each partition as a distinctly separate image file. That functionality difference has never deterred me from it's use, but there are those who have decided against its use simply because of it.

    pvsurfer,

You probably saw our long thread about using batch files for creating Entire Disk images with DS. But you don't need to use batch files. That was just a fun exercise. DS can create and restore single or multiple partition as well as Entire Disk images. Very versatile.

    Yes, I'm aware of that.
But I am not sure why that would deter anyone though.

    pvsurfer,

I just saw your edits. Each imaging app creates multiple partition images when it does an Entire Disk backup. But TeraByte apps, Macrium etc, put these into a single file. Somewhat like a zip file. Having multiple images doesn't bother you, me or Hadron. You only have to select one and all are selected.

But I do prefer single image backups.

I saw it, but doing batch files is above my 'pay-grade'. The Windows interface is so much easier (at least it is for me)!

But can Full and Differential DS backups be automated via the GUI?

Thank you for bringing this little detail to my attention !!!! Curious that the person who sells this software doesn't talk about it!

No - but I'm sure you already discovered that. ;)
Tom Ehlert (the developer), an ardent follower of the 'KISS' principle, believes that the Windows Task Scheduler suffices for that purpose.

    ^This

Almost afraid it would jinx me if I puffed on about how versatile AND 100% (so far) foolproof DS is been for my systems and that's even stretching back with Windows 98! Couldn't possibly have foreseen it not only lasting as long as it has but trouble-free. Coupled with Macrium Reflect (for me) it's a pair of reliable fallbacks that frankly wouldn't be without.

@mood - Thanks for new version post alert. Amazing

Has anyone found a way to hide the flashing console window when starting drive snapshot?
The only way I've found is to start it minimized and then select it from the taskbar to see the GUI
I was hoping for a better method.

FYI, I just ran into a problem with the latest DS 18847/18848 trying to do a differential from a full backup that was done with DS 18830/18831 DS indicated that the hash file was invalid. If I used DS 18830/18831 to do the differential, no error occurs. So, it seems the new version will throw an error with older hash files. It may also be a bug

Good find - have you reported that to them?

Yes. Something similar happened a while back going from v1.46 to v1.47 where some changes were made. The error msg back then made sense as to what to do, whereas I'm not sure how to deal with the latest error.

@Adric, I don't make a habit of updating DS with every monthly (or so) release (I'm now using 18825) so I can't try to confirm that error, but I would ask if it's possible you entered a hash file associated with some other full backup? Actually, I once did that. ;)

I did not encounter the hash problem with my Win8.1 and Win10 differential backups, so it looks like the problem is only related to that specific diff-backup with Win7. I sent the dev the hash file, but haven't heard back yet.
