Google has announced that Chrome 80 stable release will be available for users starting today, February 4. With Chrome 80 Google is enforcing a new secure-by-default cookie classification system for providing even more privacy to users.

"With the stable release of Chrome 80 this month, Chrome will begin enforcing a new secure-by-default cookie classification system, treating cookies that have no declared SameSite value as SameSite=Lax cookies. Only cookies set as SameSite=None; Secure will be available in third-party contexts, provided they are being accessed from secure connections."

Chrome 80 arrives today with potentially site-breaking cookie changes [Update]

The plan to force third-party cookies onto HTTPS was first revealed in May 2019, this forewarning should have given website admins time to update their website to ensure that no problems occur with the launch of Chrome 80. It reminded the developer community again in October 2019. For those who still haven’t made preparations, Google has published a video explaining what the change means.

Update: According to the Chromium website

"the SameSite-by-default and SameSite=None-requires-Secure behaviors will begin rolling out to Chrome 80 Stable for an initial limited population starting the week of February 17, 2020, excluding the US President’s Day holiday on Monday. We will be closely monitoring and evaluating ecosystem impact from this initial limited phase through gradually increasing rollouts."

Google is making progress on expanding the control users have over cookies in the Chrome browser with a new flag in Canary that enables an improved interface with more buttons and information.
The experimental feature is available in the Android version 82 of the browser and adds two more options for cookie management.
No 3rd-party cookies in incognito mode
In the current configuration of Chrome 80 stable for all supported platforms, you can allow/block cookies on all sites or just block third-party ones. The latter comes with the warning that some sites may not work properly when the restriction is active.

The flag that enables the four buttons is called "Enable improved cookie controls in UI in incognito mode." You can look for it in the 'chrome://flags' experimental area.

Google rolling back Chrome’s cookie security measure in light of COVID-19

Google today announced that it’s temporarily rolling back SameSite cookie changes in Chrome due to COVID-19.

With version 80 in February, Chrome began enforcing secure-by-default handling of third-party cookies to limit tracking and increase privacy. The rollout has been gradual with close monitoring of the impact on the web. For more, read our explainer on the changes.
Google announced today that it’s temporarily rolling back cookie enforcement in Chrome given the “extraordinary global circumstances” of COVID-19. It wants to ensure that online services — at a time of increased usage — remain stable.

While most of the web ecosystem was prepared for this change, we want to ensure stability for websites providing essential services including banking, online groceries, government services and healthcare that facilitate our daily life during this time. As we roll back enforcement, organizations, users and sites should see no disruption.

Google resumes Chrome’s more privacy-friendly SameSite cookie update

Google announced on Thursday that it will bring its SameSite cookie update back starting July 14th, alongside the launch of Chrome 84. The update will roll out gradually to Chrome 80 and later versions.

Chrome used to accept cookies by default, but with the introduction of its SameSite labeling policy, Chrome will block cookies from functioning in a third-party context, unless they carry specific labels. This is part of Chrome’s phased approach to privacy: this is supposed to limit which cookies collect data across sites, and in turn, limit the data those websites collect on users.

In contrast to Safari and Firefox, which block third-party cookies by default, Chrome has decided to phase them out within two years. Following this incremental plan, earlier this month Google announced Chrome would be blocking third-party cookies in incognito mode.

Google starts testing its replacement for third-party cookies

Trust tokens are meant to foster user trust across sites without relying on persistent identifying data like third-party cookies. They theoretically prevent bot-based ad fraud without tying data to individuals. This would be one framework as part of a larger Privacy Sandbox including multiple open standards.

Google has just pushed back its plan to block third-party cookies in its Chrome browser to Q3 2024. Actually, this step was supposed to be completed in 2022, but was then postponed to 2023 and will now only be implemented in 2024 at the earliest – if at all. Google justifies this with further tests of the sandbox, which are necessary.
The project is delayed
Now Google has published the blog post Expanding Privacy Sandbox testing, which includes the updated timeline for rolling out the new Privacy Sandbox, which can be viewed on this page. Starting in Q3 2023, the Privacy Sandbox is expected to be made available in the Chrome browser.

The green area in the screenshot above covers a phase of 12 months, where this technology is to be used slowly. Third-party cokies are then expected to disappear starting in Q3 2024. The blog post Expanding Privacy Sandbox testing states that they want to start initial tests in the desktop browser with the release of Chrome 104 in August 2022.
