Today, AT&T announced that it has expanded its 5G network to 137 new markets in the United States, adding up to a total of 327 markets where the network is now available. The new markets include cities in over 30 states, notably including Anchorage, Alaska. T-Mobile recently enabled its own 5G network in the state, becoming the first U.S. carrier to bring 5G to all 50 states, but it's no longer alone there.

With this expansion, AT&T now says its 5G network is covering over 160 million people, making it one of the more broadly available 5G networks, trailing T-Mobile's, which was said to cover over 200 million people when it launched in December of last year

Ford Signs Deal With Vodafone for Private 5G Network in UK

Ford Motor Co has signed a deal with Vodafone Group Plc to install a private 5G network at the car maker's electric-vehicle (EV) battery facility in UK's Essex, the companies said in a joint statement on Thursday.

The project is part of a 65-million-pound ($80.87 million) investment in 5G backed by the UK government, according to Ford and Vodafone, and would be among the first of its kind in Britain.
The private 5G network at Ford's facility will replace older Wi-Fi networks and help speed up the production of EV components, according to the companies.

"For a single EV product, this could generate more than a half a million pieces of data every minute", the statement said, adding that the upgrade will provide faster and more accurate manufacturing control and analysis.

Equinix, one of the world’s largest colocation data center providers, today opened an international business exchange data center in the city coupled with a 5G and edge computing proof-of-concept center.

The $142 million data center opened the same day that Digital Realty, one of the world’s largest wholesale data center providers, announced the availability of Vapor IO’s software-defined Kinetic Edge interconnection technology in Dallas and two other U.S. cities to test edge-native applications and workloads.
Equinix characterizes its 5G and Edge Proof of Concept Center in Dallas as a “sandbox” for customers to test and validate 5G and edge computing use cases for mobile network operators, cloud platforms, technology vendors, and enterprises.

One Chinese city is testing a bus scheduling system that’s powered by 5G.

The next-generation wireless technology is said to be able to handle more tasks quicker than before. It means authorities in Guangzhou will be able to monitor real-time passenger flow, bus dispatching, video recording and more on the busy B27 bus line.
The project was launched in May with 5G data transmission kicking off on Monday.

Buses equipped with 5G can now be found in cities like Qingdao and Zhengzhou [...] 5G is also slowly being introduced on subway lines across the country.

AT&T expanded its 5G rollout today, deploying its low-band flavor of 5G to 28 new markets in the U.S.

New markets include Austin, Dallas, Maui, Miami, Orlando, and Salt Lake City, among others. This brings the carrier’s 5G tally to 335 cities, covering 179 million people. AT&T plans to have nationwide 5G coverage by this summer.

“DSS is an important steppingstone on our path to nationwide 5G,” said Igal Elbaz, SVP of wireless and access technology at AT&T, in a statement. “We were the first U.S. carrier to deploy this technology in our network, and it’s now playing an important role as we work toward a nationwide 5G footprint this summer.”

Finnish telecoms equipment maker Nokia Oyj said on Monday it has won a 5G contract worth about 400 million euros ($449.48 million) from Taiwan Mobile to build out the telecom operator's next-generation network as the sole supplier.

A supplier to Taiwan Mobile's earlier networks, Nokia will prepare for the deployment this month and complete the migration to 5G standalone within a three-year period.
Nokia, along with Nordic rival Ericsson, has picked up most of the 5G contracts in Taiwan.

To offset hurdles faced last year, the Finnish telecom operator has been scripting a turnaround by diversifying its chipset supply and grabbing 5G deals.

Optus is planning to test the use of 5G millimetre wave (mmWave) technology to support users in dense areas with large and concurrent demand for its mobile network, with Ericsson as its partner.

This comes after the Australian telco was given approval by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) to operate and test mmWave technology using the 26GHz band at four locations in Sydney, including its Macquarie Park headquarters.
Earlier this week, Optus made its first mmWave data call at its headquarters using a Casa Systems mmWave customer premises equipment (CPE) after extensive testing at its Sydney lab.

Lambo Kanagaratnam, Optus’s managing director for networks, said it was important that the telco starts testing mmWave technology now so it can better harness its capabilities for consumers and enterprises in future.

With T-Mobile’s acquisition of Sprint in full swing, it’s time for some big changes. Following a test run in New York, T-Mobile has now completely shut down the Sprint 5G network across the United States.
That means many Sprint 5G phones out in the wild will no longer see 5G speeds. The exceptions to this are the Samsung Galaxy S20, LG V60 ThinQ, and OnePlus 8 which have band support for T-Mobile’s 5G network.

The Sprint 5G network was live in parts of Chicago, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Washington, DC, Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Kansas City, and Miami. T-Mobile is taking the 2.5GHz spectrum Sprint owned and re-deploying it and optimizing it for its own network. However, all Sprint phones (aside from the ones mentioned previously) still won’t work on the network after this change happens.

The solution depends on Integrated Access Backhaul (IAB) technology, which Verizon said last year would be a key tool to expanding its still-nascent 5G network.

A new American study has found that, despite concerns, fifth-generation wireless technology, more commonly known as 5G, appears to pose few health risks.

To investigate, researchers at the Oregon State University decided to look at the effects of radiation on embryonic zebrafish. Although it might sound surprising, zebrafish and humans are similar in terms of their genome and developmental processes, meaning that findings from zebrafish research can also be applied to humans.
In the study, the embryonic zebrafish were exposed to 3.5 Gigahertz radiofrequency radiation, which is the frequency typically used by 5G-enabled cell phones, for a period of two days.

The findings, published in the journal PLOS ONE, showed that the radiation appeared to have no significant impacts on how the embryos formed, their response to light, or their risk of death.

Vodafone calls for 5G auction to be scrapped

Vodafone wants the government to cancel an auction in which mobile operators bid for "space" on the 5G spectrum.
It follows the decision to strip Huawei kit from mobile networks and economic uncertainty from the Covid-19 crisis.
And Vodafone says radio frequencies for 5G mobile services should instead be evenly distributed for a set price.
The auction had been scheduled to start in the spring but was delayed because of the coronavirus. It is now expected at some point in the next year.

The recommendation, made by the US National Advertising Division Wednesday, came after AT&T complained Verizon was being potentially misleading about how fast its 5G service is and where it's available.

"Even though Verizon does not agree with all aspects of NAD's decision, we remain committed to the self-regulatory process and will comply with NAD's recommendations," a spokesperson said in an emailed statement.
"We are pleased and agree with the decision," an AT&T spokesperson said in an emailed statement. T-Mobile said it "believes customers should know what they're getting when it comes to 5G."

French operators might still manage to get an eight-year authorisation for Huawei equipment in some cases, and could yet decide to use its gear for that time period, the sources said. But even this meant eventually dismantling it, they added.
One of the sources said it would be difficult for a telecom operator to take the risk of investing in Huawei gear, given new mobile technology like 5G takes at least eight years to yield a return on investment. “Granting three years amounts to a flat refusal,” the person added.

AT&T's 5G network crossed an important milestone Thursday, with the telecom giant announcing on its second-quarter earnings call that its low-band 5G network is now available to 205 million people.
In addition to expanding its 5G network, AT&T is also expanding its 5G access on Aug. 7 to include its Unlimited Starter plan. The carrier previously limited 5G only to those who paid for its two priciest unlimited plans, known as Unlimited Extra and Unlimited Elite.

To get to nationwide status, AT&T says that it has turned on its low-band network in 40 new markets, including Minneapolis, San Antonio, Houston and Jacksonville, Florida. The carrier now offers low-band 5G in 395 markets around the country.
The 5G expansion arrives ahead of what is expected to be a busy smartphone season for 5G.

Today MediaTek is announcing another lower-end 5G chipset: the Dimensity 720. Numerically slotting in just below the existing Dimensity 800 (and far under the Dimensity 1000 and 1000+), the new chip steps things down to just two "big" cores, but otherwise sounds like it offers a similar experience.

MediaTek's Dimensity 720 will be built at TSMC's 7nm process with an on-die 5G modem that can pull 2CC carrier aggregation, VoNR, 4G/5G dual SIM dual standby, and support for sub-6Ghz 5G. Network speeds max out somwehere around 2.34Gbps.

Folks hoping for 5G on a budget will probably see the Dimensity 720 land on even less expensive phones, further democratizing the latest carrier technologies — at least, in the markets that get it.

Following extensive preparations and some delays, the FCC today officially kicked off a nationwide auction of “prime” spectrum in the 3.55 to 3.65GHz range, offering carriers the opportunity to bid on seven mid band slices per county, augmenting their existing low and high holdings.
Mid band spectrum has become desirable in the 5G era, offering longer-distance propagation characteristics than millimeter wave and more open stretches of bandwidth — in some countries — than lower bands, which numerous cellular networks had already put in use.

The start of Auction 105 was originally planned for earlier in the year, but delayed until today due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
