Google+, the search giant's failed social network, will finally be laid to rest on Tuesday morning

Launched in 2011 and competing with Facebook and Twitter, it was Google's fourth attempt at a social network.
But the platform failed to win people over, even after Google pushed it upon the thriving YouTube community.

By the end of 2011, analysts were already writing obituaries. But Google decided to close the site only after discovering a data breach, in 2018.

What were the problems that led to its downfall? Google’s explanation is that it decided to close the platform “due to low usage and challenges involved in maintaining a successful product that meets consumers’ expectations”.

Google’s constant product shutdowns are damaging its brand

It's only April, and 2019 has already been an absolutely brutal year for Google's product portfolio. The Chromecast Audio was discontinued January 11. YouTube annotations were removed and deleted January 15. Google Fiber packed up and left a Fiber city on February 8. Android Things dropped IoT support on February 13. Google's laptop and tablet division was reportedly slashed on March 12. Google Allo shut down on March 13. The "Spotlight Stories" VR studio closed its doors on March 14. The goo.gl URL shortener was cut off from new users on March 30. Gmail's IFTTT support stopped working March 31.
And today, April 2, we're having a Google Funeral double-header: both Google+ (for consumers) and Google Inbox are being laid to rest. Later this year, Google Hangouts "Classic" will start to wind down, and somehow also scheduled for 2019 is Google Music's "migration" to YouTube Music, with the Google service being put on death row sometime afterward.

And that blox phone and google glass were jokes fit for April 1st.

Google+ is back! Meet the enterprise-focused “Google Currents”
Consumers may have been kicked off of the service, but G+ lives on for the enterprise

After diving into the social media wars and getting routed, Google+ will live out its retirement as "Google Currents"—it's the Google+ code base, but with an enterprise focus. The reborn Google+/Currents will now do battle with Facebook again, this time with the enterprise version of Facebook, called "Workplace," and also Microsoft's Yammer.

Currents is now the second big enterprise communication tool from Google. The other is Google Hangouts Chat, which is a Google's version of a Slack clone. Just like Currents, Hangouts Chat is closely associated with a dying consumer Google product, Google Hangouts.

After eight years of mostly negative press, it's no wonder Google decided to change the name of Google+. This is actually the second Google app named "Google Currents." The first Google Currents was introduced in 2011 as a news magazine app [...]

Last year, Google launched the beta of Currents, which was essentially a rebrand of Google+ for G Suite users, since Google+ for consumers went to meet its maker in April 2019. While Google+ was meant to be an all-purpose social network, the idea behind Currents is more akin to what Microsoft is doing with Yammer or Facebook with Workplace. It’s meant to give employees a forum for internal discussions and announcements.

To complicate matters, Google kept Google+ around, even after the launch of Currents, but in an email to G Suite admins, it has now announced that Google+ for G Suite will close its doors on July 6, after which there will be no way to opt out of Currents or revert back to Google+.
And with that, Google has driven the final nail into Google+’s coffin. The Google+ mobile apps will be automatically updated to Currents. All existing links to Google+ will redirect to Currents.

Google+ comes to an end as Google Currents for Android, iOS launches

As telegraphed last month to G Suite admins, Google Currents is exiting beta and entering general availability today. The social network shut down last April, but Google is keeping the service alive for enterprise customers that need an internal way to communicate with employees.
This launch is starting with a rebrand of Google+ for Android and iOS to Google Currents.

On the backend, existing plus.google.com URLs will continue to function and automatically redirect to currents.google.com. It’s a seamless update on mobile with the existing Google+ client just being updated over. Meanwhile, full availability is expected over the next five days.
