Today I noticed error in my event viewer happening with Windows Defragger. Error 264 is logged when defragger tries to perform TRIM on non-SSD drives:
After some googling I found another report with more serious bug (defragger trying to defrag SSD): https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...frag-bug/4c5498b9-04fe-41c9-8535-ed10313b6f33

I could reproduce an issue so I disabled scheduled maintenance also.

EDIT: here is a link that describes how to disable it: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/40119-enable-disable-automatic-maintenance-windows-10-a.html

Thnx for confirming. It seems to me that automatic maintenance doesn't distinguish between SSD and HDD and tries to perform both operations (defrag and re-trim) on all drives.

Now, that's something. I reported something like this (it seems the opposite ) while running Insider builds fully six months ago. No replies or responses just an automated acknowledgement. I had the app open while System Maintenance was running because there were problems with it back then already. Finally, I feel vindicated. :thumb:

Are you considering to maybe run a third party program to do this instead? I guess I can hold off for a little while. It needed to be done once per month so that's what I'll do. I guess.

For now I just disabled Maintenance and will wait for a bugfix. I will manually re-trim SSDs once a week using built-in defrager, for HDD I use Defraggler.

Ah, OK. I don't fully trust the Disk Optimizer myself, until, like you said, a bugfix is done. :cautious:

Sometimes, I wonder if the Feedback Hub is useful even 5% of the time. It seems Microsoft doesn't give a rat's patootie about the vast majority of legitimate posts on there, unless they have hundreds and thousands of upvotes. You're like: why bother?

When I tested it, built-in optimizer didn't make a problem if it was run manually. Only maintenance task caused a problem. But I can't be sure of that, so it might be smart not to use it.

I agree, too bad, that MS didn't spot this one from insiders' reports. I also posted about it on Woody's site in comments. Maybe some media exposure will make them fix this faster.

FWIW, I have also seen this Defrag error in Events log in W10 2004. So far I only seen one, and according to Windows, defrag has never run.

Edit: I just realized I got another one of this Defrag errors (error number is 264) yesterday, so the total as of yet is two.

Yes, Windows "forgets" that it has already performed maintenance so it will try to do it again and again.
Error itself is not a big problem to me ( it just shows that defragger tried to perform trim on HDD ) but I don't like the fact that it will also try to defrag SSD (which is not recorded in logs).

After examining logs for source Defrag I found a lot of information level events which show that SSD was defragged. Usually first record is eventid 258:
right after that there's the second event:
So it seems that defrag on SSDs was performed daily on my system.

Thanks for the information. Running the command from the article provided by Minimalist, this is what shows up:
    freshstart.png

This says all your third party apps will be removed but some settings and your data will be preserved. Not a clean install but for me, still worth remembering the command for a quick access.

According to the article you linked it looks like they intentionally defrag SSDs. Since it says "Never run" on my PC there is likely no reasonable way to tell after the fact when and if it has ran at all. Maybe check the Event Viewer to see if it was logged? You could set up something to monitor for that process to run and log it when it does but that is beyond what the average user would be willing and/or able to do. It looks like the Defrag utility must be the thing they give the interns to work on when they start. :isay:
