How to Enable WhatsApp's New Dark Mode on iOS and Android

A feature that’s long been requested on WhatsApp has finally, officially arrived.
Dark mode is starting to roll out on Android and iOS, making a feature that’s been accessible in beta available to all users. Rather than going for a stark, true black dark mode, the app instead opted for a dark gray and off-white.

To access the new dark mode feature, make sure you’re running the latest version of the app. Dark mode should automatically appear for users on iOS 13 and Android 10 if they have dark mode enabled in system settings.
Users running Android 9 or below can enable the feature by heading to WhatsApp Settings, navigating to Chats, selecting Theme, and choosing Dark.

A spokesperson said the update will be rolling out “in the coming days,” so if it’s not immediately available on Tuesday for you, check again later this week.

Meta.StackOverflow.com is the place people go to ask for features, and they went there a lot. As of this publication, it is the 12th most upvoted question on Stack Overflow Meta, and No. 1 most upvoted on Feature Request (out of 41,785 questions), with 824 views and 30,000 upvotes.

The original request for dark mode came back in 2013. Other sites like Reddit, Facebook, and Twitter all have similar features, with iOS introducing the feature in September 2019.
Two things may have combined to make now the time to do it: The never-ending, continuous stream of customer requests, and the reality that the competition was doing it. When the operating system converts the background to the main system screens, it makes non-dark-mode applications a little more jarring.

Dark Mode has been one of the biggest design trends in the UI of apps and devices. But when it comes to users, the trend has transitioned to a level where other people will call you out for using the default or light mode when the arguably better dark mode is available on apps or devices.
According to a report by 9to5Google, Google seems to be working on bringing Dark Mode to the Google Search results page and potentially, its other web pages on Chrome for Android.

There is a dark mode available for Google Chrome on Android. It can be enabled by going to Menu > Settings > Themes and users will be able to toggle between Light/Dark theme options available. But toggling to Dark Mode here will only change the Chrome UI and New Tab page to the dark theme and the websites would retain their default/light mode appearance.

9to5Google has found a code change on the Chromium Gerrit, ‘Show the dark SRP for Chrome Android’ that was described as “If enabled, users will see a darkened search results page if Chrome is in night mode as well.” This suggests that Google is working on a new flag for chrome://flags to enable dark mode.

Google is adding Dark Mode support to its Google Search apps for iOS and Android, with the new feature to begin rolling out tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. Pacific Time.

Google says that it wants to give search app users more options to customize their Search experience, and when ‌Dark Mode‌ is enabled on Android 10 and iOS 13, the Search app will be displayed in ‌Dark Mode‌. The same goes for Light Mode, with the feature following the overall system settings.
Dark Mode‌ can also be enabled or disabled using the Google app settings on iOS and Android, which enables ‌Dark Mode‌ for iOS 12 users as well as ‌iOS 13‌ users.

Dark mode is rolling out on Tuesday, and Google says that it will be available to everyone throughout the week.

Gmail for Android’s dark theme began rolling out at the start of this month. Google today is now making the look official and providing an availability timeline, while also bringing it to iOS.

Update 6/5: Last month, Gmail’s dark theme for iOS started widely rolling out with Google’s blog post about the feature from September officially reflecting that: “Dark theme is now fully rolled out in Gmail on mobile devices.”
Release notes for an update today (version 6.0.200519) provide further confirmation:

Facebook has reportedly been working on bringing dark mode to its Android app for a while now, with some early versions leaking online.

Now, more screenshots have emerged that provide a clearer look at what the dark theme might look like. The feature seems to be ready in comparison to what earlier screenshots suggested. The new screenshots suggest that the social media giant will let users toggle the feature on or off, with an option also present to let the app adapt to the system settings, where supported.

Dark mode will likely use a mix of light and dark grey shades and may not feature deep blacks.

It is not clear when the firm will begin rolling out these features to the public. With Facebook’s new web experience that sports a dark mode option now making its way to all users, it shouldn’t be too long for the company to bring that functionality to the Android app as well.

Microsoft is now working on a dark mode experience for Bing and this new experience will be first available for mobile users.

Bing will begin the roll-out of this new Dark Theme option for m.bing.com users in the coming weeks. As you can expect, once you enable this new option, the whole experience including image search will have dark mode look.
Microsoft also confirmed that they are working on Bing dark mode on Desktop, but it is not yet ready for public roll-out.

Now, the developers behind the browser are rolling out an update on the Play Store which brings even more new features.

As per a recent blog post from the company, the latest update for Vivaldi on Android brings a dark mode for web content which adds to the light/dark themes already available for the user interface. As you can see in the attached image, once the dark mode is turned on it will automatically convert any web page to a dark theme. To enable the dark mode, users will have to head over to the Themes section in the browser’s Settings page and tap on the toggle next to the new Dark Mode for Web Pages option.

Most popular applications and platforms, from Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge to Twitter and Windows 10, support dark-themed interfaces.
While Chrome lets you browse the web in dark mode, only sections of the browser change color. UI components like menus and the toolbar turn dark, but the web content doesn’t.

According to the folks at Techdows, Google is fixing that. The company is reportedly now working on a setting that’ll enable you to force Chrome scrollbars to turn dark along with the rest of the browser.

Facebook has confirmed that it is finally rolling out Dark Mode to a very small number of users for testing for both iPhone and iPad.

It doesn't seem clear whether this is simply a toggle, or if you can customize the app to change with your wider Dark Mode settings for iOS. Regardless, it seems Dark Mode for iOS is much closer to being a reality for all of Facebook's iOS users.

Dark mode is becoming more of a necessity these days with most apps and operating systems supporting it (looking at you, ChromeOS). Microsoft started testing a dark mode in its OneDrive Android app last year, and it made it into the stable release a few months back. Now the company has unveiled that dark mode for OneDrive on the web is on its way.

This move will bring OneDrive on the web in line with its Android and iOS apps. Microsoft says dark mode will be available across both commercial and personal accounts, and highlights its usefulness for helping reduce eye strain and improve battery life on devices with OLED screens. There's no firm ETA, but MS says to look for it soon.

Dark theme is one of the most requested user features for smartphone apps, and Google has been delivering. The company has now enabled the feature on the Android versions of Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides.

The new update, when it rolls out, will work with Android 10's system-wide dark theme. It'll also have a discrete dark theme option so users can configure it separately if they're on an older version of Android — or just because.

Dark mode was admittedly one of my favorite experimental flags in Chrome for Android. Not only did it force web pages to match my device's dark theme, but it also saved my retinas from catching fire while reading articles at night. So imagine my chagrin when we found out Chrome will be sunsetting dark mode later this year. Luckily, there are other Android browsers in the Play Store that offer their take on dark mode for web content.

Before we get started, it's worth noting that [...] all the browsers on this list are built using Chromium, the same open-source code that powers Google Chrome. That means any of these browsers that leverage Chrome's forced dark mode flag will possibly also have this feature removed in future updates. That said, the beauty of using open-source code is that developers may find ways to continue to support dark mode, even after Google removes the flag.

Google Translate's dark mode looks better now, but hasn't yet rolled out to everyone

Many of Google's most popular apps have received an update with dark mode, but Translate remains an outlier. It's been hanging on to its white-only interface like it previously did to its outdated, first-gen Material Design look. In February, things seemed to be moving ahead with version 6.5 of the app, though they surely didn't go in the right direction.

The new dark mode is much more balanced than the one we spotted in February, and doesn't have the same harsh blue tones or unreadable fonts. You can see it in the screenshot below on the left, which was provided to us by tipster José.
Translate's dark mode officially rolled out to iOS in February, but has yet to come to everyone on Android. Even now, with this most recent server-side test, it's only live for a few users.

Over the past year, Google has been gradually updating all its app with a new dark mode setting. The company recently released dark mode support for Google Translate, Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides. And now, the company is preparing to add a dark mode option for menus and settings on Google Maps.

While Google released a dark mode for navigation on Google Maps back in 2018, the app didn’t include an option to turn on dark mode for the menus and settings pages. According to a recent tweet from Android app developer and reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi (@alex193a), the company is finally working on adding a universal dark mode toggle to the app.
As you can see in the screenshots shared in the tweet, the new dark theme option in Google Maps can be found within the Appearance section in the app settings.

Google today announced that dark theme is rolling out to Docs, Sheets, and Slides on iOS. Today's release comes two months after dark mode arrived on those apps on Android.

Like its Android counterpart, the feature will automatically respect the iOS settings. However, if you prefer not to enable it, you can disable dark mode by heading over to the menu settings and then choosing the theme section.
The new look is available to all G Suite users with either personal or enterprise Google accounts, provided they have the latest version of Docs, Sheets, and Slides installed.

In addition, you can tap on the three-dot menu and then choose "View in light theme" in order to see how your document will look in light mode to tailor content for either theme. This feature is available from today, and it's a welcome change for those who prefer to see these apps in a less eye-straining view in dim-lit conditions.

The Google Maps app for Android finally has a complete dark theme, at least for some users. According to one Redditor with version 10.51.1 of the Maps app, there’s a new “appearance” option in settings that lets you switch between a light theme, a dark theme, or the device default theme. When toggled, the menus and settings of Maps are tinted according to your preference. Theming the appearance of the map during navigation is accessible from a dedicated option in navigation settings.

We checked for the presence of this appearance setting on several of our devices but could not find it. It’s likely rolling out to users via a server-side update.

While Windows and macOS users have been enjoying their flavors of dark mode for quite some time now, Chrome OS users have sadly been missing out on the fun. However, thanks to a recent sighting by Android Police on the Chrome OS Canary channel, it looks like Chrome OS users can now join in on the dark mode hype train.

We reported back in September that Google has been internally working on proper dark and light themes for Chrome OS.
The system-wide feature is still in its early development stages and is not officially ready to come to the Stable channel yet, but if you have a Chromebook and are itching to start using the upcoming feature today, you can do just that by going into the Flags menu on Chrome.

Looking at responses on Twitter shows the rollout is kind of a mixed bag, with some users reporting it shows up on their end (mostly iOS users as the feature is also rolling out for them) while others are reporting it’s not.

Windows 10 comes with a built-in dark theme, but there are still some major Microsoft apps that have yet to gain a true dark appearance. Microsoft Word for Windows 10 is now the latest to roll out a dark theme and it also follows the operating system’s built-in theme preference.

Like other first-party apps, Microsoft Word is now switching to a darker dark theme and it looks much better.
As you can see in the above screenshot, the new dark mode now applies to all areas including the document area (blank section of a Word where you type words) and search box.

This new look will be easier on your eyes and it also makes menu items and shelf stand out.
